I take my post back. They stopped making good music after 6DOIT (The Glass Prison kicks ***).

Listen to yourselves, people! Dream Theater do make crappy songs. To say that all their work kicks ***, is being arrogant.

"I walk beside you" sucked. Octavarium could have been better (The bloody song isn't a whole song - it's a series of songs put together. Compare it to ACOS). They're not even progressing any more, all their songs are metally now.
Its all opinion. I personally like "I walk beside you" and "Octavarium."

ghettoeddo 05-13-2006 12:34 AM

i walk beside you is great. it grows on you. used to hate it as well.

and if octavarium is a string of songs....so is ACOS. on a broader scale, octavarium ties togehter the whole ALBUM instead of within the frame of the song like ACOS does.

only DT song i detest: lines in the sand. everything else is fair game :]
they're the ONLY band in my entire music-listening career so far that i have been unable to switch out a CD for weeks on end

Captain Quentin 05-13-2006 12:37 AM

yeah i love both those songs, and i think they still are made good music after 6DOIT it's just in a different direction, which IMO is a good thing.
you can't have a band sounding the same their whole career, they would get boring.

I absolutley LOVE Lines In The Sand!

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 04:47 AM

I really like I walk beside you, too. It's very different...which is what prog is all about, surely? Going in new directions?

Jev 05-13-2006 04:50 AM
no i said i like the intro only like when portnoy starts the drums and it gets faster

the rest of the song besides that sounds cheesy to me at least
Oh right, sorry I misread.

The only song of ToT I think is slightly cheesy is Honor Thy Father.

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 05:00 AM

Everyone vote Portnoy now or I'm going to slap you

Jev 05-13-2006 05:04 AM

I already have :smoke:

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 05:24 AM

:smoke:

I wonder if we could get Portnoy to join us on the Stonerbus?

Jev 05-13-2006 05:27 AM

I didn't think any of the DT members ever did drugs.

Enlighten Me 05-13-2006 05:29 AM

They don't look like stoners.

Jev 05-13-2006 05:30 AM

Exactly. They all look like they've not touched anything.

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 05:30 AM

Damnit.

I want some stoner conversation with Mikey.

Jev 05-13-2006 05:30 AM

We will get him don't worry.

Inkstar 05-13-2006 05:50 AM

If they turn to drugs, they lose my respect. But hey, sif they'll ever do that anyway. :P

Gunna give Octavarium another listen now in hope of 'getting into it'.

Enlighten Me 05-13-2006 05:59 AM

Maybe drugs will broaden their horizons

Jev 05-13-2006 06:03 AM

I don't think so.
I think they're all a bit too old to start now.

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 06:10 AM

maybe theyll be like towelie and need some good ideas for a new album so they smoke some weed

but i doubt it as i think all of them are family men

Jev 05-13-2006 06:12 AM

I can't wait to hear a new album. Even though it's not even being recorded yet.

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 06:15 AM

Or written, probably.

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 06:16 AM

even if they start in 2 years they can write an album in 2 weeks

like they did with ToT and it doesnt take much longer to record

Jev 05-13-2006 06:18 AM

Yeah they are amazing.
I mean I was reading the LTE booklets and the albums were written in a week each

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 06:20 AM

they must not bull**** around like other bands and are good song writers... pathetic how other bands take a year to write an album

Jev 05-13-2006 06:22 AM

A berklee education and a perfect knowledge of music theory does help.
Look at James hetfield. He's admitted to not knowing anything about music, or how to read music. That's why bands like Metallica take a while to write albums.

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 06:25 AM

hmm.... makes me wanna learn theory

Jev 05-13-2006 06:26 AM

It's difficult to grasp at first, but once you're over that hurdle it's not too difficult.

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 06:29 AM

any books you recommend?? i have john petrucci wild stringdom.... which is the closest theory book i have

That's probably why James Hetfield sucks, too.

the2stranger 05-13-2006 06:33 AM

Wiser words were never spoken

And JH does suck, but when Kirk started helping they got worse.
