I am a drummer and I usually learn from Danny's drumming...actually I have learned ALOT from it. Dynamics were improved, getting comfortable with timings, and polyrhythms. He is a very unique and one of a kind drummer out there... I love playing through Triad and Schism, but I've learned Parabola and bits and peices of T&L on drums, then a whole bunch of stuff on Aenima, but I always play it cause it isn't normal.. it's exciting and hella
fun! He's no god but he impresses like no other. |
Surprisingly enough, today, I was trying to play polyrythms with my hands on my belly.
boredom++ I was playing 4/4 with my right hand and 3/4 with my left. Nothing complex, but still, it was fun. Hey Chris, since you're a pretty knowledgable dude, what is the time sig for the 46&2 drum solo? It's seems polyrythmic to the guitar and bass parts, but yeah, help. |
Everyone knows he's a beast, but to truly appreciate how good he is, you probably have to be a drummer.
This is the truth, sometimes I put Tool on just to listen to the drums. |
Yeah a 4/4, 3/4 polyrhythm is the first step in understanding them.. it is easy to achieve but once you get use to it you realize polyrhythms can become insaneand have no limits!
Moses - I do this aswell.. motivates me to get behind the kit and excel in drumming! :p |
Danny is so underated.
Period. :) |
None of you want Adam's guitar?
|
When I listen to The Grudge, I listen to the drumming. Same thing on Disposition and Reflection. I find percussion to be a very soothing insturment.
EDIT: I would die for Either one of Jones' 79 Gibson LPs!!! I'd want the green sunburst one. :D |
Ken, the man of 20+ years of drumming expirience has never seen/heard anyone pull it off perfectly. that's saying quite a bit right there.
I heard a soundclick of just bass and drums where some guy did end up pulling it off exactly. And wait, how old is Ken? |
ok ill stop the nonsense but i need a favor from u dudes, lsiten to thew song i record it today and sjut tell me if it sounds good, i play it all there and well i ****ed up everything even the drums, i can obviously play much better but my cll phone was in my pocket and it was vibrating and i was srota indecisive as if to pik it up or start again and well i almost stoped the song a couple of times, tomorrow ill do a better version of it:) pls listen to it.
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/2/theherbals_music.htm i also sing! my bro does a lame intro at the begining the drumming is so bad.. .am asahamed of my self :( |

You gotta love those tablas on Disposition! Very soothing indeed. And the way Danny adds electronics into his drumming his just a whole new charateristic of great ability as a drummer. |
Danny is so underated.
Period. :)
I wouldn't say so, anymore. A lot of people recognize him now. |

Not knowledgable in the rhythm department. :( I am fairly sure that the drum part is in a different time signature, but I'm not sure what it is. |

The 46&2 solo is in 7/4 with every 4th bar in 8/4. It's a wicked solo if you ask me.. stands out from lots of other drum solos.

its perfect for a drum solo. the spot in the song just makes the climax that much more powerful. |

Go to these Cog forums, there are a few 90-95% tabs for tracks off TNN. Hey to all the older reg's:wave: Listen to Cog \m/ |
I listened to the don't panic cover, well the first 30 secs of it...you need to sort out your use of the mic, it clips like a mother fcker
|
Hey, thanks for the linkage Greg. I've been searching for some tabs for a while, so maybe if there's a good powertab, I'll learn it. :)
You all should listen to Cog. Tool+Australian accents=Cog |
Song recommendations?
|
indeed, YSI us a sampler :)
|
I'd love to, but I'm on dialup, remember? :upset:
If you want reccomendations, check out Real Life, Run, Naming the Elephant, and Doors. All are great tracks from The New Normal. G mac was the guy that originally got me into Cog, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind hitting you guys up with some uploads. I'll point him this way if I see him online again. :) |

I really like the before mentioned solo on 46&2 and the drumming in the middle of "Lateralus" (when maynard sings 'Feel the rythum, feel inspired...), the swishing of the high-hat with the bass drum is bad ***, IMO (same thing during Eulogy when Maynard sings 'you claimed all this time...'. Also, cliche, but the end of "Schism" is amazing. well **** it, he's just amazing all around, anyway My timing signature recognition sucks, but isn't Reflection in 8/8? |

Pretty easy, gets easier depending on how well you know the song. The 'solo' requires the right feel though |
nice, hows it going man, i havent posted in here a few days (kurrptsenate was banned)
|
Going well thanks to you reminding me what that guy's (avatar) name is. I've been wracking my brain for days trying to remeber
|
haha, ill have to show u my custom CHE paint job SG ima be working on as soon as i get the right sand paper...
and yes, my grandmother was an art teacher for 50 yrs :thumb: |
For being an alt account, you sure have a lot of posts on it. As for Sober, the song took me about half an hour to learn. :-/ It's extremely simple, and it gets a little boring after a while. The solo is tricky for me. Not technically, but like Ben said, if you don't have a grasp on the methods of Jones, it comes out quite awful. :p
/knows from expirience |
Heh, nice. I wish I knew how to do stuff like that. I'm a good artist (to some extent or another) but I have no idea how to do custom paintjobs or anything fancy like that.

/knows from expirience
yea i have 40 hours to kill every week, so i spend it on MX hahaha... yea i never even looked at the tab, and its the LAST tool song i would want to play, but im pretty complacent (sp) and will do it anyways |

i devised a method so i cant mess up :thumb: |
Having danny carey as your drummer if you were a bass player would be very hard if you were to let danny play to his full potential. I have so much respects for justin becasue he feels comfortable enought to let danny go wild in odd timing while he hold his own stuff down..he is amazing

I agree, the bass is often a very rhythmic instrument, and keeping rhythm to some of Danny's stuff must be rather difficult to say the least. Justin can hold his own though, most people often forget just how talented of a bassist Tool have. |
