I grew up on the old Macintosh computers at school...hated them. Only redeeming feature was Dinopark Tycoon. /Nerd

I have an iBook G4 for school now, and it sucks worse than the 100 Mhz nonsense of the golden days. All I use for school is Microsoft programs anyway, like Word and Excel. Those crash all the time because they are ports to Mac.

I discovered PCs and have always had the opinion that they are more stable, faster (@ the person who said the new Macs are faster, try Quad video cards [using 4 cards that could kick any ATi Mac versions out of the water with just a single one of them], Dual-Core 2.4 Ghz [for a combined total of 4.8 Ghz] 64-bit processors by AMD that totally kill IBM in every way, 4 GBs of RAM with faster clock speeds than an Indy Car, 8 GBs with 64-bit Windows, Hard drives that send 3 GB/s data, and the ability to upgrade everything yourself without having to function through the facist regime that is Apple) and cheaper. I can build a PC that is on par with a G5 for [I]at least[/I] $500 less. Also, you get to customize the look of PCs with an infinite amount of cases, case windows, appliques, lights, overclocking, cooling systems, etc. PCs are just so much more satisfying.

I was wrong to say they are superior, I know they're not. But they are more successful than anything the competition is coming up with nevertheless. Since Microsoft owes much of its success to savvy marketing in the first place, I should think that Apple as earned the right to be able to get rich of of what was their innovation. I was using the iPod to illustrate the point that when Apple finally gets presented with a level playing field instead of being dominated by Microsoft in every way due to past business mistakes, Apple wins the hearts of the buyers. You can call it "people being impressionable" but I'd imagine that's the same thing that leads so many people to assume that PCs are better and Macs and their users are all retards just because PC stuff is more common, when really they don't know anything about one or the other except the dinky computers in their high school.

It depends on what kind of thing you're talking about here. Much of Macintosh's updates for Apple applications comes free and the computer regularly searches automatically for available new versions of the computer's programs, and new operating systems just cost a few bucks. You can't upgrade memory or things like that very easily, though, granted.

Me too. I believe I made a few points about high school computers and the iMacs in particular. In my high school's case, the server they had the network linked up to was very weak and didn't have enough power to run the computers effectively, causing much slowness and many crashes. It doesn't mean that, were you to own one that was operating by itself, connected into the appropriate power and internet outlets in your home, the Macs would still be fraught with such problems, and they aren't, generally speaking. (EDIT: Especially not with the new ones with G4-G5 processors) They're famous for that. PCs get problems much more frequently even without an exterior server to hook it up to.

Based on what you said, though, it sounded like your computers weren't hooked up to a network. Was that the case, or did you have a student interface where you would log in with a name and password and such?

Yes, which is why I said Microsoft is about mass-producing software products and liscensing it out to other companies who are then responsible for building the actual machines, such as Dell. This is different from Apple because they design the majority of their products themselves: everything is done under the one logo. Applications, machines, system, peripheral attachments, consumer products, software.

Look, bottom line is, I can't stand Windows and have no use for any of its convoluted machines or programs and don't fancy having to deal with idiot problems and an idiot tech support staff. I value Apples because they do everything I want my computer to do excellently and in a way that suits me better than the PC's way. They never crash and any problems I run into are very minor and are usually solved after a simple reboot. They meet every standard I have and I wouldn't have it any other way. I guess I shouldn't have been so single-minded in my assertion that Apple is superior, as though it were a law of the earth, but in my opinion, it is clear that for what I need my computers to do--have perfect internet, easy-to-download upgrades, intuitive interface to assist in correcting problems, and no crashes, not to mention the smooth running of a wide variety of applications and my favorite games, like Call of Duty and the like--Apples are the best. I won't change your mind, but that's the way of the Microsoft-Apple wars.

We used Dell PCs for that, and the iMacs were in their own lab without a network connection.

No, I mean that Apple may design their actual computers, but the manufacture of their computers is leased out to various third-parties, meaning that they have as much say in quality, etc, as Microsoft.

For what it's worth, I think you made the best decision. If you need to go home for something, you're not too far away, but at the same time, you'll save money on gas because you won't have to commute everyday.

i don't understand why people want such good pcs for gaming, you can have a great gaming experience on a slightly lower-spec machine for much less money.
the laptop i have is 512mb RAM, 40gb hard drive, 128mb integrated graphics, 1.40GHz Intel Celeron processor, and it runs most games fine, if i adjust graphics levels.
