Despite a running time of 80 minutes it took me nearly 2 hours to watch it because I was constantly rewinding it. |

There's some damn shitty band names on that site: Ham Sandwich? Cashier Number 9? The Shoos?

btw i got a 75 for my final recital, pretty good feedback said 'an astonishing feat of memory' |
Congrat man that's great. A mate of mine just got a 1st on his music course, think he got 76 or something as his average o_0.
I ha a brilliant cuppa this morning in my favourite mug. Just been reading some books on martial arts, looking to make a short vid of me and my trainer doing some cool stuff. Nothing fancy, just a bit of fun really. |

Nothing fancy, just a bit of fun really.[/QUOTE] Oh yeah weren't you into kickboxing and the likes? I started karate again (last did it when I was about 13). Did Shuko-Kai before but now I'm doing Shotokan which is much more up my street, much more practical and aggressive. Did 5 belts in Shuko-Kai and I just tripled graded at my first grading for Shotokan so I'm pretty damn happy with that. I had a gold standard brew in my Dark Side of the Moon mug and I felt like I could tackle the day. Then me and my old man replaced the air filter/generally frigged about with the Stag and now I'm going to watch some David Attenborough. Sound. EDIT: Oh shit yes, well played Fingers. Although I'm still massively confused as to why you called it Jack Lyons when you uploaded it. |
Yeah I did boxing at uni, I stopped for a bit though cause I got a pretty bad eye injury.
I got into MMA shortly after, I still watch it and love it but I prefer the grappling, ground game so I do Jiu Jitsu, Catch wrestling etc now. I've never done Karate, I know next to nothing about it. One of the dues I hang round with, sorta my trainer, he's a 3rd dan BB in Taekwondo, was on the olympic team and stuff. Brilliant guy but capable of some incredible things. |
I've always liked the idea of stuff like jiu jitsu and taekwondo but I never really saw the practical side of it. Yeah getting someone on the ground in a proper fight is pretty damn effective but I dunno, I think I'd prefer to be able to handle myself on my feet.
How does MMA work? I mean, is there a set style to it or do individual dojos decide which bits from which martial arts they use? |
A long way back there used to be competitions of "Which martial art is better?", which was basically pitting people agaisnt each other in matches regardless of their background. So you had Muay Thai fighters taking on those that did Eskrima, people doing Savate and trying it out on Judoka etc. Any combination really.
Brazil way back and in recent history is known for its brutal fighting competitions called Vale tudo (free fighting) in which martial artists essentially were in no-holds barred fights, smae mentality of "which is better" but a lot closer to full-blown fighting as opposed to pitting martial art practices agaisnt each other and seeing how they match up. UFC, PRIDE, DREAM etc are organisations that have evolved over time, building themselves up to where they are now. Watch the original UFC event and see Royce Gracie destroy clueless, one-dimensional odd men with his elite BJJ skills - fast forward now and see sold out 20,00 crowd events watching multi-talented multi-dimensional fighters in very well rounded competitive "combat". You can enter an MMA comp with literally no knowledge of anything. You'll get chewed up and spat out in no time. You have to know as much as you can about everything you can. The main elements are striking (boxing, kickboxing, TKD, Muay Thai etc), grappling and clinch work (Jiu Jitsu, forms of wrestling etc), and ground game (Jiu Jitsu etc). Things like Judo arent hugely effective but some people have done very well with it. Karate is a no-no and is nigh on useless in MMA. Some gyms definitely favour certain styles and approaches but they do train (for the most part) every facet of the game, they may well just excel at others. For example, team hammer house produces good oldschool styled wrestlers but they tend to suck off their back, on the ground in general, and really lack submission knowledge and defence. Chute box were known for high-end striking and producing incredibly wild aggressive fighters. The wondeful thing is theres so many elements, fighters, styles etc that different weights, people, styles, fights etc are completely different. George St. Pierre is incredibly well rounded, a gifted athlete and takes a very mathmatical and cautious approach to fighting. Very gameplan oriented. Cain Velasquez is also very well rounded but is much more aggressive minded, likes to take the fight to his opponent and fights with a lot of intensity and pressure. Long and short of it is, to be successful you need to excel at, or at the very least be comfortable, fighting every style that can be thrown at you. An elite level karate blackbelt is a wonderful accomplishment but a college wrestler would take them down, keep them down, and grind out a nasty beating on them. If I could use any style in a fight I wouldnt pick Karate, and to be honest I wouldnt pick any martial art cause for most real life situations theyre useless. You need to know a real life fighting system such as Krav Maga for such situations. |
you crazy joe rogan.
