Good to see you putting that degree to good use :p
21 in a week! So 20 then...

idk, i've never had the urge to learn really.
Depending on where you live and how you manage traveling about, it is not a big deal. I did not pick up my license until I was a month from being 18, then it sat in my wallet until this summer, which is the most I have ever driven, over the course of three months.

I ride a bike, though, and public transportation in Portland is one of the best, so it is not a big deal I do not drive.

Also, growing up, all of my friends had cars at 16 and drove constantly, as well as I was always with them. We went to the same places, so it was not a big inconvenience not owning a car.

I still do not own a car.

If I ever pickup a motorized vehicle, it will probably be a motorcycle.

You're going back to do more? I don't think I could ever do more than my undergraduate, I've already spent 15 years in education and haven't even gotten that yet.

Yeah, I'm going to do my MA in the fall. Just haven't decided what I want to do it in, yet.

Either Arthurian literature, or cultural theory in conjunction with contemporary speculative fiction.

funkyhoney 10-08-2009 07:40 PM

Isn't doing what is essentially an extension of what you've already done and can't find work for in essence sort of a waste of time, effort and money?

Having said that I'm not doing much literature studies because it generally bores me.

My undergraduate degree was basically a general English degree, a little bit out of every era, important author, etc.

Getting a MA will allow me to specialize, and open me up to a world of employers who want graduate degree holders for their work (for whatever reason). It will also let me start lecturing at a university level, and help me decide if I want to go get my PhD and become a life-long academic.

Mostly I'm hoping that my band gets off the ground in the next year and then I can just go fuck the dog and tour and play for a couple of years before doing anything real with my life. :p

funkyhoney 10-08-2009 07:46 PM

What exactly kind of thing does an English/Literature degree open up?

I'm doing Creative Writing and some Journalism and Marketing. Basically theory and technique, which is good because I don't like studying old things and writing about them etc.

BenJammin 10-08-2009 07:49 PM

Fuck if I know, truthfully. I can get into editorial work, which is probably what I'll end up doing. I can think of worse things, and certain worse paying things.

Around here, creative writing gets you a box on the street to live on, and nothing else. Sadly.

funkyhoney 10-08-2009 07:52 PM

That's what I guess is good about my course, it isn't three years of "how to write a novel," it's a whole range of writing involving everything that involves creativity. I.e. Everything but journalism and reference writing. So I'm doing a minor in journalism and some marketing units because I can't be ****ed doing a whole business degree. I don't even like traditional journalism that much, creative non-fiction and subjective journalism are more my thing.

Pretty much. I am starting to realize this.

funkyhoney 10-08-2009 08:05 PM

Yeah, hence I'm considering stopping now, halfway through, especially if I can keep with the e-zine for a while.

This.
It doesn't mean you will be stuck in some Initech-style cubicle either, just that you need to have enough imagination to find a job that isn't in your field.

Also not being an idiot is pretty requisite.
