My GP5 Review:

If any of you went and listened to the samples on the official site, you were most likely blown away. When I actually used Guitar Pro 5, the reaction was quite the opposite...

I tried opening some of my bands stuff straight into guitar pro 5. Uhhgg, was a horrendus sound. The distortion rythym was absolutely gross, the bass drum didn't work, and it all kinda ran together until it all mudded up. I tried a few more songs, anything with clean/acoustic guitar sounded amazing, but the distortion was pretty bad. If anyone has ever tried Sweet Guitar, it sounded about as bad as that...

I decided I'd try writing something basic and fiddle around with the 8 options for distortion guitars. I discovered that the sound samples didn't lie. If you write something in gp5, it has the potential to sound very nice and somewhat real. You have to be much more concious of things like palm mutes now, and finding the write distortion can take a bit of work. If you get everything to sound just right, you can have some very impressive shred, but the riffs will only sound decent at best. I hope in updates they improve upon things like the bass drum, or tweak the Real Sound Engine a bit. As far as writing music goes, I think the possibilities have opened up a bit, as far as listening, I think I'll stick to the midi for now.

I'm gonna stick around for updates and mess around writing music with it. Either way it's got a few cool new features that gp4 didn't have, so it's cool.

But were those features worth 50$?

$65 acutally since I ordered a CD to install it for my friends.

Idk if it was worth it, my friends are gonna chip in like 10 bucks each so I won't end up having paid too much anyway, and if they decide not too it's an early Chanukah gift.

Eh, I hate four trakcs. I can just record into my computer. I just use powertab because it's an easy and quick way of tabbing my songs.

I like midi programs because I write things that I'd never be able to write on guitar becuase I either would never think of it (on gp muscle memory is not an annoyance) or becuase I can't play it. Also it gets a good sketch of what the band should sound like.

I don't mind at all. I'm sorry this is taking so long. Me teachers feel the need to slaughter us with projects and quizzes just before we're let off for Thanksgiving, so I've had some importent school stuff to do. But since tomarrow is my last day, I should have it very soon. Just keep reminding me. :)
