Well, Opeth was incredible in every way. Mikeal was hilarious and Into Eternity and Nevermore tore it up as well.

The Baying Of The Hounds
When
Bleak
In My Time Of Need
The Grand Conjuration
Deliverance
Face Of Melinda
Blackwater Park
Encore: Demon Of The Fall

The Grand Conjuration and Deliverance were probably the highlights of the night. The sound was perfect and the place was packed. Amazing show.

My favorite quote from Mikeal: "We are here for two reasons. One, because we love you. Two, because Martin Mendez over there wants to do a one man strip tease>"
 That's an awesome set list. Very heavy! :( Toaster wishes he saw Opeth in October, but alas he was broke.

How many more albums can you envision Opeth releasing? I can't see them writing more than two more albums before breaking up.

Deth 11-12-2005 08:39 PM

I think the only way the band would break up is if somebody in the band died. I think Mikeal would be hesitant to continue it if that happened.

Well, besides Lopez, if it's soon, god forbid that happens.

I hope they progress from Ghost Reveries, and finish their career classy, whenever that is. :thumb:

Opeth is such an incredible band.

Can anyone tell me what the longest song by them is?

Shattered_Future 11-12-2005 09:28 PM

Black Rose Immortal. 20:16 of greatness.
Black Rose Immortal. 20:16 of greatness.
Yeah, that is a great song. I use it for my 20 min walk home from school. I must have listened to it a hundred times and I never get bored of it.

Does Mikael do all the vocals (hard and soft) or does someone else do the soft ones?

If he does both, he is truly insane.

Shattered_Future 11-12-2005 09:36 PM

No, he does all of them.

One of the best male singers in metal today, IMO.

i am the robots 11-12-2005 09:52 PM

Yeah, he is really talented, only people better are probably Garm, Vortex, and Lars Si.

heavy metal kid 11-12-2005 10:34 PM

I just saw the Lamentations DVD, it's awesome. Damnation live is better than the album itself even better than the second half of the show imo.

Yes, that DVD is godly, as are all the live versions of Damnation. Although, I feel they should have thrown in one or two pre-Blackwater songs aswell. I would haev loved to see them play April Ethereal or The Moor.
And Mikael should have used a second vocalist on the albums, newer and older aswell. Per just adds so much to the vocal harmonies, it's incredible. Mikael did a wonderful job harmonizing his vocals on all the albums, but it would have been so much more beautiful with Per, or another talented vocalist singing the second voice.

Other than that, the DVD is amazing, all the things about older songs are forgotten, once you watch the Deliverance/Damnation making-of Documentary. That is truly the best Bonus Feature they could have added to this DVD.

Det_Nosnip 11-12-2005 11:18 PM
I was kidding, guys. It was all a joke, spurred by Jude's complaint of circular discussion. And hey, what do you know, the conversation it spawned actually was interesting.

Det Nosnip, suddenly I seem to put you on edge, did I do something that you took offense to recently?
Nah, it's all good. I really just wanted to consider the passage in further detail. I have somewhat of a sophist in me, also.

They would have loved to throw in older songs, but their then label did not have rights to that material, so they were unable to perform their own ****ing songs. Gotta love it!

epihasi 11-12-2005 11:22 PM

Yeah I heard about that. That must suck so much. But it's still amazing. Does anyone know, or maybe guess, what the most complicated Opeth song is? Instrument-wise.

They were aloud to, but they would have had to pay the old label to.
Novembers Doom, the singer is freaking awesome, but the lyrics almost ruin it for me, they make them sound nu-metal. I've only heard Swallowed by the Moon.

Agalloch, on the other hand, wow. Way, WAY better songwriters than Opeth ever will be.
Initially I was thinking your post had some substance with the November's Doom comment.

But how is Agalloch "way WAY" better than Opeth. Surely the two styles are similar, therefore not much separates the two bands. Apart from the fact that Opeth have released 8 quality albums back to back, Agalloch two, maybe three.
A better thing to have said would've been "I prefer Agalloch over Opeth because of this/these ____ reason(s).

I prefer Opeth over Agalloch for 1001 reasons.

Yeah, I used the wrong words.

Agalloch I find better than Opeth because they meld the acoustics into the heavy parts so well. Especially on Ghost Reveries, Opeth always just jump straight into the acoustic sections, so it's like a surprise, but with Agalloch the transitions are seamless.

Then again, you can't really put the two together, seeing as Opeth are more about changing your mood within one song it seems, whilst Agalloch keep the same desperate, cold tone throughout.

And, although his clean voice sounds like some Aussie pop band from the 90's, I like Josh's vocals better. His "growl" has all the emotion and power, yet Michael, for me, doesn't have any emotion in his growl, which is good for most songs but again, it changes the mood of the song.

Hmm..I didn't realize Agalloch was Opeth-like. I need to check them out. Care to send me some songs?

i am the robots 11-13-2005 01:20 AM

On the topic of Opeth-esque bands, you should all check out Farmakon, they're like Opeth meets Phish.

Kage 11-13-2005 01:22 AM

That's an odd combination. Although, I realized, the idea of Opeth-esque bands isn't really that appealing. I mean, Novembre and Novembers Doom are alright, but they can't match the magic of Opeth in my opinion. Opeth does something different. They're my favorite metal band, and listening to bands like them would be pretty redundant.

Trust me, Farmakon has some pretty good original parts to their music as well... they're more rhythm based for one, and their singer's accent is really thick Russian. Plus they breakdown into straight up jazz.

Kage 11-13-2005 01:27 AM

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'll definately check them out. They sound quite different from Opeth as well as, as you say, being similar.

i am the robots 11-13-2005 01:28 AM

Yeah, it's not something like April Ethereal where they clearly idolize Opeth and want to be them. Though I really enjoy Advent (one of their albums).

Det_Nosnip 11-13-2005 01:47 AM

Wait....the name of the band is "April Ethereal" and they have an album called "Advent" ? That's going way too far!

Yeah, but dude, it's like the level of Norther style rip-offs, it's so good that it's acceptable.

Good for the style, I prefer pencil personally though, easier to control.

The Brad 11-13-2005 02:23 AM

Yeah but stippling in pencil is a bitch. I learned that the hard way last year drawing Peter Steele. Besides, the exercise called for ink.

I see, I prefer freeand to stippling, stippiling is seriously a bitch.
