Spaceman Spiff 02-07-2010 11:53 AM

I'm doing some recording today. I can't wait to get some damn guitar down already.

blacklungfever 02-07-2010 11:44 PM

My band recorded a demo over the holidays, but we've been stupid busy and so has my brother (he recorded us) so we still haven't finished mixing.

It's getting a little silly.

Spaceman Spiff 02-08-2010 12:08 AM

That's cool. Do you guys play live much? Band name? Genre?

FunkMetalBass 02-08-2010 09:03 AM

Mornin', y'all.

I get to do my taxes today. Yippee.

BenJammin 02-08-2010 09:06 AM

Sup? Had a good band practice last night. Only taught one new song to the drummer, but we got that and the other 3 mostly perfected.

Also, got 2 other songs finished with vocals. Things need to be ironed out, but as it stands, we've got 14 songs completely finished now.

Nm, man. Just looking at my ever-growing list of things to do. One thing on the list for this week is to straighten up my guitarist's pedal board. His levels keep getting adjusted because the pedals aren't fastened to his board, so I'm going to take care of it tonight after my math homework and he can stfu.

Glad things are moving along so well for you, Ben. Congrats.

I'm at the point in my writing where I'm not sure what ideas I want to bring to the table with the band. I currently have this beat poem written and a 15/8 riff to speak it over, then a 4/4 chorus that I sing. Seems a bit too avant-garde for the band, though.

Left Shoe 02-08-2010 09:24 AM

spam.

Phil, I miss you.

How's school goin', dude?

Left Shoe 02-08-2010 09:56 AM

i hate music school, im going to law school after i graduate.
i hate music school, im going to law school after i graduate.
Really? Wow. Why? What's so bad about music school?

Left Shoe 02-08-2010 11:11 AM

music isnt a hobby anymore, nor is it even fun right now. its work, every day for long hours to see minimal improvements.

Moon Flavor 02-08-2010 11:49 AM

rule of life: never go to school for something that you love, because school sucks the love out of whatever you do

fatbandit 02-08-2010 12:00 PM

that's exactly why i didn't go to university. the only thing i'd have wanted to do is music. but i'd learnt from my college course that it wouldn't be a good plan. i finished college nearly two years ago and i still haven't recovered from the musical rut it put me in :/

fatbandit 02-08-2010 05:26 PM

oh and my cease.transmission is in the post now joe, cheers again for that big time you star :)

funkyhoney 02-08-2010 05:27 PM

That's why I didn't go to university for film or music, two thing I *don't* want to ruin. I did go for writing though and it sapped some of that out of life for me. I'm considering changing course mid year, perhaps vet tech.

Efrim 02-08-2010 08:11 PM

i changed my major for that reason. only took two courses to see what direction english was headed in.

gaslight 02-08-2010 08:34 PM

Doing a music degree isn't all bad. It isn't all good either. You just need to keep your head above water and take from it what will benefit you without getting too caught up in the things you don't want to be caught up in.
That's cool. Do you guys play live much? Band name? Genre?
Genre? I have no idea. Rock/jazz/experimental, I suppose. We gig once or twice a month. The recording that's there is from the demo, so it's mostly unmixed. We recorded it live.

As for the music school thing, I can see your guys' point but agree with gaslight. I've gotten a lot better since I started my degree and I find it's allowing me to have even more fun playing bass than before. True, sometimes it's overwhelming and I definitely don't like every aspect of every class, but it sure hasn't ruined music for me in the slightest.

I think the key is finding an outlet for playing the music you really want to play (for me, see above link), and it makes all the stuff that's not so great worthwhile.

FunkMetalBass 02-08-2010 11:09 PM

I will NEVER record bass before the guitars ever again. I have to re-record two songs on bass, and I'm really not looking forward to it.

blacklungfever 02-08-2010 11:12 PM

why the **** does my last post keep getting cut off.

when we record with this band http://www.myspace.com/chicagogangwars we record drums and bass live (it's more fun and ends up being tighter, with us for some reason.) then everything else after.

I like bass before guitars.

I do too, until I find that my bass' tone doesn't fit well with the guitars and drowns our guitarist out, so I'm forced to change. From now on, I'll let everyone else record, then use a spectrum analyzer to see what kind of tone I need exactly without stepping on everyone else's toes.

blacklungfever 02-09-2010 01:34 AM

maybe your guitar player should just get better tone

Convectuoso 02-09-2010 02:14 AM

Maybe Particle man should learn how to EQ/Mix and stop making excuses.

And if there's bad tone, it's his fault also for tracking it with bad tone...

gaslight 02-09-2010 04:42 AM

The new Mark Bass gig bag looks worth checking out in person, Bass Bag 24 it's called. Looks like it would be an improvement on my Warwick Rockbag unless it is disappointingly flimsy in construction or something.

FunkMetalBass 02-09-2010 10:47 AM

Have you guys ever itemized your gear and really looked at how much it's worth?

I am getting music instrument insurance and finishing up my guitars right now and it's just shocking to actually see.

Granted, I'm taking into consideration a couple modifications that I haven't actually made yet, but it's still weird to look at. My gear is worth more than my car, but insurance is much cheaper.

Yes.

It's sickens me sometimes.

gaslight 02-09-2010 06:30 PM

Yeah. It's really important if you do that, not to make a list of money you've earnt from music and compare them. Now that is sickening.

funkyhoney 02-09-2010 06:38 PM

Hahahahahha.

"So currently, I'm 29 grand in the hole... Hrmmm."

So I test rode the bike I'm planning on buying yesterday, it was frightening to just hop on one after over 6 months of not riding. I'm thankful it was a quiet street.

gaslight 02-09-2010 06:39 PM

can you do a wheelie

funkyhoney 02-09-2010 06:47 PM

No.

gaslight 02-09-2010 06:55 PM

how about a stoppie

funkyhoney 02-09-2010 07:45 PM

No.

gaslight 02-09-2010 07:48 PM

That's a good thing really.

funkyhoney 02-09-2010 07:52 PM

Yeah, I can ride one, and have a license, that's about as far as it goes.

FunkMetalBass 02-09-2010 07:54 PM

If I continue to play out twice a month and make $50 per gig, I'll only need to gig for **crunches numbers** 12 more years to break even!

funkyhoney 02-09-2010 08:03 PM

I like that return!

There's nothing cooler than responsible driving.

TimJim 02-09-2010 08:55 PM

that and australian traffic laws **** you in the arse

gaslight 02-09-2010 08:57 PM

Really? Which of our traffic laws are you talking about?

Moon Flavor 02-09-2010 09:18 PM

he's timjim he just pretends he knows what he's talking about regardless of what you're talking about just so he can talk
