And then I realized I wanted to be Scottish instead of Irish, but I enjoy being a German Afro American.

Historically, the Scot tribes came from the Irish island, and Scotland was populated by the Picts, who used to paint their faces and bodies blue (that's where the word "picture" came from). Then there was a long series of raids by Irish pirates on coastal towns, which made the Pict fishing villages move inland, and Scot villages began springing up, moving inland, spreading. I think this was around the same time as the Saxon invasion of England, but it could just as easily have been five hundred BC, I'm not good at remembering years.

EDIT: Ironically, what set off the Irish conflict is the Scottish settlers that were sent by some king to "bring civilisation" to Ireland, and happened to be Protestant.
