3 day weekend sweet.

Sad But True 05-27-2011 12:48 PM

Shit, missed my docs appointment today because I was fixing my pc and lost track of time. Stupid GPU keeps going nuts so I've upped the fan speed and it seems to be working better now. Odd though, considering it was within it's operational temp...

SugarCoatedSour 05-27-2011 12:56 PM

got it oc'd?

Sad But True 05-27-2011 12:57 PM

No, strangely, because I didn't want to overheat it haha. I'm just about to run Fallout 3 because that usually makes it crash almost straight away, see if it's worked.

SugarCoatedSour 05-27-2011 01:07 PM

what kind of gpu?

Sad But True 05-27-2011 02:23 PM

Gforce 9800GT

nm, just going thru midterms. I came back to Peru for the semester only to realize that the best business school in the country is 3 times harder than the best business school in Mexico, who would've known... :/ I'm having a bit of a hard time adjusting, but the upside of all this is that I get to be around my family. I have 12 cousins around my age and all of them are a lot like me in partying habits so I've been destroying my liver on weekends and then my brain the rest of the week. My last midterm is tomorrow, just before the Champions League Final... that I'll watch with my cousins, so I might get lost in alcohol for the weekend.

Sad But True 05-27-2011 03:10 PM

I can't decide which team I hate more, Manchester United or Manchester United.

Not a typo, I just hate them so much they cancel out all other teams.
So what's this amp I keep hearing about?

Also, anyone got any experience with TeX/LaTeX?
Yes, quite a lot, what do you need?

The_Mop 05-27-2011 06:16 PM

Basically wanna get started with it, give it a go, see what it can do e.t.c. I knew a guy who more or less swore by it, and someone mentioned to me how great it is for quickly typing up technical lecture notes, thought it might be worth a shot.

As I understand it, LaTeX isn't a program, it's more like a protocol/syntax or whatever... downloaded proTeXt cuz I heard that's a quick way into it. Havn't messed with it yet. Any good advice?

Think of it like HTML; it's formatting commands, not a language per se. It's essentially quite easy since you can start with a template, google whatever weird commands you need (graphics, urls etc) Download a template and "TekMaker" software (you'll probably need to get the MikTek compiler seperately) and see how you go from there.

It really does make very professional looking stuff though. Some of mine:

(I'm not a biochemist, that was for a biophysics module)

So it really is well worth it; most decent journals use LaTeX templates.

No idea if you know this or not, but: if you pronounce it "latecks" everyone will think you're an idiot, it's a chi so it's "latek". Nip that one in the bud ;)

The_Mop 05-28-2011 05:54 PM

Yeah, I was quite close to getting that wrong considering the first person who told me about it kept saying latex, like the rubber - however before I've even started/discussed it with anyone, i found my lecturer saying it the proper way, so i dodged that one :P

When I went on the LaTeX site it reccomended proTeXt, which as far as I can gather is more like a mix of already available software - it comes with a bunch of installers and what order to install them, which consists of MikTeX and TeXnik Centre, then it reccomends to either install Ghostscript or GSview on top of that. Installed MikTeX so far and it seems pretty cool from the get go, but I think I better get to learning some of the commands :P any good guides about?

Blue_Moon 05-28-2011 09:43 PM

It's better to google commands as you need them, there are thousands. I can't remember how I learnt, I've been using it for years, I'm sure there are hundreds of tutorials. However the one web page you NEED to bookmark is:

sup lod, I might still be a little hungover from the weekend, but it was all good

I'd buy a reaaaaallly nice microphone. For 1k you could get something real cool.

Hell at camcorder prices these days, you could get both.

JoshIsNumber3 06-01-2011 10:04 PM

unless you're going royer into ba preamps or something, i'd be happy with an sm57 and 421

also new opeth album cover is sweet, haters hating tho

Convectuoso 06-01-2011 10:59 PM

Maybe for guitar. But Raayl's vocals are always terribly thin, hence the reaaallly nice mic suggestion.

That cover is freaking fantastic.

fingers mccoy 06-02-2011 02:59 PM

smacked my recital today dudes

half an hour of pieces, no piece longer than 3 minutes, most shorter than one, all ridiculously hard, done from memory and done pretty well, with a huge finish. that's three years of underachievement vindicated.

The Transporter 06-02-2011 03:12 PM

i read that as "smacked my rectal"

Sad But True 06-02-2011 03:14 PM

Tell me you videoed it?

I can't believe that 'videoed' is actually a word.

fingers mccoy 06-02-2011 03:27 PM

it's not been filmed but has been recorded, i suspect it'll be on the uni website in a week or so.

NEEDTOPOST 06-02-2011 03:34 PM

post a link when it is

also can you hear hoppstock's breathing on the record you gave me? i cant figure if its his breathing through his nose or the scuffling of his hand/cloth against the guitar. its been sort of distracting since i first noticed it, but i actually kinda like it when i think of it as his breathing

fingers mccoy 06-02-2011 03:36 PM

yeah it'll be his breathing

breath is an extremely useful cueing/phrasing device

When you consider the word "sheeps" appears in the OED, "videoed" doesn't bother me. Makes sense in fact. "Sheeps" is an abomination.

You have got to be kidding me.

Why would sheeps need to be a word, never mind the in dictionary?

Pandering to the lowest common denominator and/or the woeful failure of schools and parents to educate their children in their own language to even a basic level.

I suppose it could be a particularly dull urban legend.

Bruce E Kinesis 06-02-2011 06:00 PM

It's a verb

"That shit really sheeps me, you know? When they put made up words in the dictionary?"

Lod, a question:

Watching something like Jersey Shore or one of its many new spin offs because you like it is just plain wrong, but what about watching it because you hate them and want to laugh at how ridiculous it all is? I'm coming down on the side of "You're still watching Jersey Shore, there is no redemption for you". Thoughts?

The_Mop 06-03-2011 06:14 PM

I don't really watch much TV, when I do it's generally on demand stuff on the internet, and I more or less avoid reality TV like the plague. Oh and ITV. That sucks.

So yeah, I can't really comment on jersey/geordie shore (which I've been hearing no end of up here in newcastle...). But on principle, I'm just not gonna watch it.
