Sounds like your doing it wrong. I really don't think food affects you. If you eat too much cheese, then just drink some water before you scream.
hi,
i am, like many other as i can see, working on my screaming... i do it for about 2 or 3 months but it didn't improve too much during the last month... i had one week were is was perfectly able to produce the sound i am looking for without the feeling of hurt or hoarsness or anything... but after that week it was gone again and now i am really frustrated.. so i read a lot in forums like this and began asking myself that this could be because of wrong food because i am really into cheese, what means i eat it like all day... so would it be worth a try to not eat any milkproducts for lets say 2 weeks or is it sure not to work because i just dont do it right (the screaming)? my singing was always good (i had lessons for some time..) and i never got into problems with this but like i said before, i am really frustrated... i started with a new band and we are doing this pop metal thing with 3 voices... two of us shouting/screaming at some parts.. the other screamer was able to scream in a good way very fast (infact he gets hoarse and cant do the singing parts after screaming, but he doesn't care... can't force him to be carefull) while i scream extremly quiet in comparison with my singing voice. so enough of my ****... 1. will changing my nurtition help with screaming and 2. when i record something and post it here, will someone who knows what hes saying listen to it and provide me with tips? ;) greats and thanks in advance, zorgblaubaer
Read through some of the hotline ifyou havent. http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911 Merkabas Voice-Help Hotline - Music & Musician Forums Then post a sample Auz or I or some one knowledgeable will get to you not to mention many others who might say "dude you suck!" I sometimes am not around for few days but will get to you eventually. You need to understand that singing itself is a workout, screaming is like a tour de france. Your cords are mucus membranes and they will attempt tp recover and protect themselves by covering up in mucus. Sometimes you may think youve lost it or something because your voice isnt doing its usual but its only too much mucus. This can be the case many times. And dairy yes, creates more mucus because in general you cant digest it well. I'm not saying that youll be super or even see a difference but you owe it to yourself to try without dairy for a while. Its not the end of the world. And any vocal teacher worth their salt will tell you the same. You also need to warm up by singing normally I would say for thirty minutes, slowly increasing the difficulty. This is when it pays to have a broad range of musical tastes. Over time you can decrease or increase warmup by being able to tell what your cords are ready for. And warm down by at least normally lightly singing low vowels. |
oke thanks. i will warm up now and than post something recorded...
i use the warmup cd that came with the zen of screaming dvd. is this enough of a warmup or should i try another one? so i recorded something now... http://download.yousendit.com/03139E9012549ED7 |

carrots and stuff improve eyesight (beta-carotin)
|
Eyesight, Hearing, Penis size, Songwriting abilities...
Carrots effect eyesight. I imagine anything that promotes general body health will HELP your hearing. Penis size could be effected. There's one vitamin that will take across curves in a penis, but shorten it a tad as well. I forget which it is or which foods it's in. If you eat and drink a ton of dairy, you'll grow "moobs" and have a smaller penis because of the excessive estrogen hormones in dairy. I know you're in HS, but you'll learn this stuff in any basic health class or study. As for song writing, it's everything. If you eat healthy, your body will feel great. You're have a longer attention span; you'll have a more energy and so forth. I could keep going and going, but you get the idea. |
I eat a lot of dairy, that would explain my man boobs.
|
Ok, I'm a singer and a fukking chain smoker, wtf can I do?
I'll stop smokin in march, so how can I prepare myself for that? and how can I improve my vocals while I quit smoking? thx |
Eyesight, Hearing, Penis size, Songwriting abilities...
Eyesight: Carrots, green leafy vegetables, anything with lutein Hearing: "As far back as 1978, research showed that vitamin A is essential in inner-ear morphogenesis (development of the structure). Benefits have been seen in the hearing-impaired who have taken vitamin A supplements, including those with noise-induced hearing loss. The best form for the body is Beta-Carotene since the retinol forms can create toxic levels if too much is taken. The beta-carotene form will not do this no matter how much is taken. The only side effect if too much is taken is the skin will turn an orangey colour." so Carrots, green leafy vegetables anything with Bvitamins,C,D,E... Theres about twenty others but for lack of time and passion I left them out. Penis size : red meat helps increase testosterone, foods with arginine which helps with nitric oxide production which is what you need to get engorged, and lean foods that make it harder to gain weight since extra fat around the middle can interfere with you suspensory ligament which means your dick wont hang as far. Song writing: Anything nutritious, raw fruits and veggies, and the food called being clever and well versed.
Carrots effect eyesight. And anything that promotes body deterioration will harm your hearing, and anything else. Thanks for getting the point |

I like cheese! |
Cheese is bad for singing though, isn't it? :(
So I bought a cheap microphone and have been practicing scales and whatnot with it...yikes! It seems I'm still having trouble keeping my voice 100% in unison with the piano...I guess I need to work on hearing myself better. Any advice for that? |
Dairy products are only bad for your voice if they cause excess mucus. Which they do in some people, but not in others.

I think I've made improvement on my vocals since I last recorded.

The low stuff I've never been a fan of because it all sounds the same to me but whatever. keep it up dude. |
merkaba could you comment what i have recorded and posted a bit earlier? XD
edit: ok forget it i made great steps forward and recorded some stuff... maybe some tips? Now it's time to put ME in the fire...
Hi there folks!
Long time lurker, i finally could record something with my new band, and here i come to ask you guys to take a listen and tell me what you think, in an overall view, and technically: 1) About the song; 2) About my singing. If you think the singing is too bad, remember i recorded the guitars also, so maybe i should shut up...:p I play guitar for almost 10 years, and started singing with POOR ability maybe 7 years ago (i'm 23 now), but not so often. Last may i bought Melissa's Zen of Screaming, and that's basically my approach (although i have some more dvds and stuff). These vocals were recorded this year. It's most clean singing, and i wasn't 100% that day, but that's pretty much me. In the "heavier" choruses (before and after the solo) i wanted to get a bit more agressive. What lacks for me now? Feel free to tell your opinions, and thanx a lot in advance! (Voice recorded through a Behringer xm8500 into protools). Here's the song: http://trig.com/samsara-maya Alexandre Macapa-Brazil |
C'mon people...it's been a few days since me (and specially the guy before me) have posted...
...won't you comment? =) Give us the honour, please. Alexandre |
the man is right ;)
|
I have a question. I tend to increase my volume when i sing high notes. Is this a good practice? I read that your volume should be kind of constant unless thats the effect you want to give.. Please share your views.
|
It is a crutch to raise volume each time you sing higher. If your doing it for the effect like you said its good, but if you have to sing louder to sing higher, its bad technique. Sing high stuff as softly ( it will be falsetto ) as possible at first, then gradually add your volume.

I think it sounds a bit talkative. You voice sounds fine though but I think youre lacking emotion and power, even in a lighter song you still need some power. However the melody gets stuck in my head though. Would be good if it was more powerful. Zorg, yours has expired! Sorry! Repost. |
ok, so in hope someone gets it intime XD

Sad sound of truth...:thumb: Thanx a lot, Merkaba! I kinda don't know what should be the level of power. I think i listen so much to ppl saying "don't push" that i just don't go for it. Well, so the thing to work on is breathing/support? Any special recommendation? Thanx again, and anyone can drop his/her opinion, please. |
Just work on projecting your voice.
Say the way you sing now is talking; you just wanna talk loudly |

Do lip trills/motor boats to get a feel for diaphragm support. If you dont know what they are you just make the motor/ motor boat/engine sound with your lips fluttering. Practice doing single notes and vowels...yes you can still shape the cords for the vowels...ay,ee,I,Oh, and also do glisses(fluid slides) up and down and feel the shifts it takes to keep the lips fluttering while in different parts of your range. |
Feedback anyone?
Does anyone know how to do pig-squeal like grindcore vocals? I heard that you have to inhale scream when doing this but when I do, it sounds like a whisper compared to my death metal growls. Any help on how to properly do them/get them louder?
I had the same problem at first, the thing is you have to tighten your what throat a bit and really go for it! i started of with a simple briie while i where drunk so you can imagine the sound of it. but just keep pushing it and you will get their! |

Here's a little inhale tutorial I made. I didn't have time to warm up before I did this, so the screams aren't that great, but it explains it. http://media.putfile.com/Inhale-Tutorial In the song Brehe I am inhaling. They sound better, but still not as good as the in the car screams do. http://www.myspace.com/theavaracomplex btw Merkaba you can link to it on your thread if you want to. |

thanks but i don't like piqsqueals, i am trying to learn "real" screams and shouts.. and telling me it sucks doesn't help me a bit... i need to know what i am doing wrong! but thanks for listeing XD |
Pig squeels are more of an effect thing, and if it's all you do, you're an idiot. Sorry to burst your bubble, Waking The Cadaver kid.
Also, Fuzzy hair, your gutterals sound great, but your squeels are off. Try putting your toungue to the roof of your mouth, round where your upper teeth are, and doing the inhale from the base of your toungue. Example: http://www.myspace.com/karlmarxband Thart be me. |

I would just like to borrow a moment of your time and ask for some critique on my singing. Yes. They just sound like kind of piggy gutterals, not a bad thing, but if that's what you're trying to distinguish as a pig squeel... I dunno, it just seems off... try going a bit higher in pitch and emphasizing the "e" vowel a bit more. |

Okay cool. Thanks. Pretty much I want to sound like a destroyer robot when I inhale. I'm still working on it. I heard some guy doing them and they highs were soooo high and the lows were gutteral as hell. |
Yeah, some people just have the range. I can't get very low, but I can push pretty high.

+1 On Detonation and Aces High the original singers (Heafy and Dickinson) really do belt it out. The way you're singing sounds weak, you don't need to yell. Just try and project out more |
