Crap. I just wrote the whole review then deleted it. Oh well.

1349 - Pitch Black

I like the way it all fits togeth in terms of sound. I like the riff. It's a shame there's only one to be heard whether because of song writing or production just blends them. The vocals I like. Excellent black metal vocals. The production is my biggest complaint. I don't like repetition either but production really kills this. I know it's not supposed to be perfect but better than this would be nice. The drummer seems more focused on speed than skill. He's nothing special from what else there is out there. Not a bad drummer though. He has the most audible changes in what he does, excluding the vocals. The bass is nowhere to be heard. I think overall I prefer the symphonic or avant garde brand of black metal. I'll look for more but not from this band.

5/10
Bad production kills it.

DEP - When Good Dogs Do Bad Things

I downloaded this track as a movement to give DEP another chance, having heard some of their older work long ago and not really liked it. My tastes have grown more extreme since my last Dillinger experience, so I didn't dismiss them immediatly this time. The first minute and the very last few seconds of the song sounded the same to me as Dillinger always has, and failed to impress me. Most of the disjointed riffs aren't very interesting, but they'll throw in a good one here or they to have me say 'Oh, oh, please capitalize on that!' before going back into plugging away. There are good points to this song in particular - the quieter section in the middle of the song and the outbursts that came from it were both executed excellently. The vocalist stood out to me, as well.

This was a well constructed song, but I still can't say I'm very interested in DEP's schtick on the whole. 6/10

Not dibs, someone else can take it...

It's funny you should complain about 1349's production FastFingers, they have alot better production than most BM bands I listen to

But they are an awesome band, one of my favorites.

Dancin' Man 11-28-2004 06:59 AM

Meh. I don't mind bad production but when it makes it hard to understand what's happening then I get annoyed. Probably just takes getting used to.

LordDargon 11-28-2004 07:15 AM

The production is a big part of the music in black metal, I like it to have a really biting, hissing guitar tone, like Ulver or Darkthrone. The drums shouldn't be too far in the front either.

I got into black metal with Mayhem. I suggest you pick up De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, it is a classic, one of the greatest recordings of all time.

As much as i love mayhem and that album, i will have to disagree its one of the greatest recordings of all time.

Pearl Jam-Alive

This was a great song, I have always liked Pearl Jam and I think this must be one of their best that I have heard. Eddie Vedder, in my opinion has an amazing voice, and this song definitely showcases that. The guitar riff is catchy and keeps my interest throughout the whole song.

Overall Grade: 9/10

Pink Floyd- The Trial (psychadelic (sp.) rock)
Lamb of God- Pariah (thrash metal)
Dream Theater- Metropolis part 1 (prog. metal/rock)
The Who- Happy Jack (um...I'm not really sure where to place this...)
Led Zeppelin- The Lemon Song (blues rock)
Black Sabbath- Fairies Wear Boots (um...metal?)

Led Zeppelin - The Lemon Song (Classic Rock/Blues)

The song starts out with a nice riff that seems actually tasteful (most Zeppelin I've heard was showing off), and then the bassline comes in (I really like the bass in this song, John Paul Jones is the only non overrated member of the band).

So Robert Plant starts his annoying high pitched screach, or so I thought he would, then he sounds more along the lines of a mixture of Chris Cornell (sp? can't think) and Anders Friden. He does each line with A loud and and enlongated phrase, then he goes quieter and repeats, truly entertaining and enjoyable. Then the song speeds up for a while, it's more of the showing off Zepplin, but JPJ makes it enjoyable, cause the bassline gets even better. Then there is another part like the beginning, except this time Jimmy Page plays the awesome guitar he's known for, that I thought was a myth, btw the solo owns, and then Robert starts saying Hey over and over again, followed by Baby, and the drums get a little better, the solo picks up, and then what do ya know? The fast part again!

Overall this is one of the best Zeppelin songs I've heard, it has actually redeemed them in my eyes.

10/10

Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots

Sounds good! The songs starts with a metal lick and then the second guitar comes in with a simple lriff. The bass is active and sounds great. The guitar breaks out into a solo. But then goes into the power chords and Ozzy joins in shortly after. It sounds really bluesy in my opinion. Like blues and hard rock. It's cool though! The solo is modest and stays true to the song (which is great). Then it goes into a heavier portion of the song. Ozzys vocals sound great. Then song ends in a metal lick that fades. The song changes from more of a metal sound to more of a blues sound. They pull it off though. Good song!

I would really like to see what someone thinks of Bruce Dickinsons solo project when he left Maiden for a bit.

Beck - Where It's At

Smooth funky intro, a bit hip hop, a bit Sublime.. pretty laid back

Hey... "Two turntables and a microphone..." I've heard this song once before on the radio.
The chourus is a bunch of people saying "where it's at" then the above line. The same drumbeat remains but there is industrial screeches and stuff along with it.

An 80's electronic bit breaks up the funky bit, for just one bar.
Then some strange samples including "that was a good drum break"

It does the same things again, not in any particular order, but flowing well all the same. Lots of random humourous samples.

In the middle theres a quieting, with a sax solo. Flanged vocals and just a drum beat.

Then a section for solos, theres a guitar, an organ, then another guitar going randomcore. All over this laid back beat. And it fades out on that loop with the random solo.

The genre mixing was pretty good as the flow between everything was done well.
I haven't heard very much Beck yet, I've read that he mixes all sorts of stuff well, and so far I can only agree with that. It was good, laid back, and I do like the genre mixing. Some of the random bits get to me, but not very much. Nothing really super special going for it.

Eluveitie - Lament

Starts out fast with celtic instruments. A bit intersting, and the vocals come in clean shortly thereafter, and quickly change to harsh. The clean vocals were a bit on the lame side, but the harsh ones are not bad.

Slows down a bit, with a fiddle part, speeds back up into another verse after a few measures. It reminds me a bit of at the gates with celtic instruments up to this point.

The slowed down fiddle part returns, which I am assuming now is the chorus of the song, although there are no words for it. This time it is accompanied by some sort of flute halfway through it.

The song breaks down after this with bass, fiddle, drums, and flute. As the flute stops, the guitar comes back in with a neat little lead, and is that slap bass i hear in the background? yes it is.

Another verse follows, but this time the second half gets blasted, which is a nice touch, it keeps the song from getting repetative. Although the transition into the chorus from the blast beat just doesnt sound right in my head. After this time around, the song ends.

Verdict: 7.5/10

It isn't a bad song at all, but in my opinion more could have been done with it. There are a few things in the song which irk me just slightly, but I will definitely give this band more of a listen to because the song drew my intrested in. Not the best song i have ever heard, but pretty solid all around.

For anyone interested, i suggest:
Enslaved - "Bounded by Allegiance" (Minimalist Post Black metal, from the new album Isa)
Age of Silence - "90 Degree Angles" (Avante-Garde metal)
Depresy - "Lunar Spell" (Melodic Death Metal)

Enslaved - Bounded By Allegiance

The quick description alone was pretty interesting.

Anyway, muted distorted guitars open it, it sounds like its going to be a 7/8 intro, but it refills the bar to a 4/4.. then overfills it to a 5/4, interesting. Rudiment style drums come in, theres also ambient kebyoard in there. The drumming changes to a double-kick based pattern.

About 1:35, it all stops but a distorted guitar is playing a new part, its melodic and simpler in the rhythm. Drums come back in normal 4/4, not fast, there's also some deep choir vocals that sound good but are too quiet. Sounds a bit like Maynard from Tool actually.

Chorus now? We have death vocals and double kick and faster feel, and a rising chord progression that sounds tense. The vocals are still too low in the mix (it's not even like the usual black metal production either, much cleaner and balanced). The vocals are set out - 4 bars with, 4 bars without.

After this, it drops into 6/8, with just guitar and buzzing synth. Drums add a simple 1212 thing over the top, then it goes suddenly back to the deep choir bit. Some high guitar with some effect that reminds me of Korn (not a bad thing), just using a major key.

Another new bit follows this and it's still melodic, more like some viking metal I've heard, a guitar solo comes in after a bit, sounds pretty easy actually.. heh mid-guitar solo theres a big growl, and double kick returns. The one guitar riff keeps repeating, but the drums keep changing, getting faster and faster.

7.5/10
And there I end the review as suddenly as the song ended, maybe it flows to the next track... Anyway, they had a good powerful melodic sound and good variety in the music. I do think the song structure needs work though, especially with the cohesion.

Don't know if anyone's said this one yet...
Not the most technical breakdown of a song ever...but it'll do I guess
Nile- Unas Slayer of the Gods

Starts out with a riff Karl Sanders admitted was identical to the Candlemass riff on the 'Nightfall' album. The song then continues with a death metal variation of that riff. Until the 5 minute mark, where it fades away and a horn is blazing with the drums following leads the song further. Tony Lauerano presents some truly amazing drum work with a double bass riff showing dedication to the Egyptian theme of the song. It doesn't end there, with another 3 minutes of awesome guitar solos over the main theme of the song. What follows is an acoustic passage in which the legend Unas (last pharoah of the 5th dynasty) is told by dark whispers. Finally the song ends after an epic 11 minutes with a monstrous riff. Aren't all death metal songs meant to be 5 minutes or less?

Others
Emperor- I Am the Black Wizards. One of the best black metal songs ever. Most recommended.

Opeth- The Drapery Falls. Beautiful song. Good use of clean vocals and acoustic guitars.

Dimmu Borgir- Kings of the Carnival Creation. Complex, with good use of riff repitition and a bit of clean voice, courtesy of the master Vortex. Would have been hard as hell putting it together.

Mayhem- Pagan Fears. One of the best opening riffs of all time, IMO. One of the better songs on the 'De Mysteriis...' album. Atilla does a good job on the vocals here, too.
