MAYH has less growling than BWP?
Most of the vox on MAYH is growling and in most songs it's just growl then the odd clean bit. I have to disagree. In general, the heaviest Opeth album I own is MAYH, i mean, just listen to the first 2 minutes of The Amen Corner *drools* |
And Demon Of The Fall just has heavy vocals, the music, while still heavy sounding, isn't THAT heavy.
Yeah i think the vocals in theat song contribute a lot to the heaviness of it. Though i would say that theres parts in the song which are more darker sounding then heavy musicaly. That songs has one of my favorite growls by the way. |
Darkness kind of goes hand in hand with heaviness
Nope. It's hard to say which Opeth album is the heaviest. I think it's either MAYH or Deliverance. Still Life is becoming my favorite Opeth album. |
Nope.
Really? Name me one album that is extremely ****in heavy yet also bright as a ray of sunshine |

Maybe that way, but then again, things can be dark without being heavy. In fact, things can be a lot darker without being heavy. But, still, there's a lot of stuff that's heavy without being particularly dark. Power Metal for example. Or Metallica. |
I think the opening of The Leper Affinity is the heaviest thing Opeth have ever done. The palm muting, the dissonance, the speed are all something Opeth don't use too much (besides the dissonance), and it suits that song really well. It's coincidentally the first Opeth song I ever heard; :D
|
I think the opening to April Ethereal is pretty heavy. And amazingly amazing.
|
I love the end solo of A Fair Judgement, especially on Lamentations (the one that goes from like 6:25 to 7:25 or so)
It makes me orgasm everytime for some reason, heh |
On Lamentations it's twice as good. I'm going to listen to that right now just because of that part.

Dang I need to get Lamentations. I've never heard any live Opeth. How does it compare to their studio work? |
Live is normally faster and better.
|
He recently was ousted from Dimmu Borgir... He is Lightnin Fast!!!
He's also godawful. Very sloppy, relies heavily on triggers, and has no groove whatsoever. I heard that Dimmu was going to use Hellhammer on their latest album....the band might actually be worth listening to! |
Don't triggers just make the drums sound more even or something? That's what I heard anyway
|

The entire song is amazing, one of my favorites. I just love the outro. \m/ ''I don't know how or why, and I'll never know When'' |

Not in A Fair Judgement's case on Lamentations. I was a bit disappointed that they noticably slowed the tempo down. It's still awesome though. And to the darkness = heavy or whatever: Don't you think that Damnation is dark? Hell yes it is, but I wouldn't go about calling it heavy. |
Don't you think that Damnation is dark? Hell yes it is, but I wouldn't go about calling it heavy.
Right. That's the gist of what I was saying. :) |
I think he ment that when somethings heavy, and dark, its made even heavier. Not that something dark is instantly heavy.
|
The entire song is amazing, one of my favorites. I just love the outro. \m/
''I don't know how or why, and I'll never know When''
Yeah, I love that. And then the riff that closes it out is so beautiful |
Hmm... well, BWP may have more huge heavy riffs, but MAYH just feels so much darker and ultimately heavier. Darkness kind of goes hand in hand with heaviness, and Blackwater Park as a whole doesn't come close in terms of darkness to the sorrowful sounds of MAYH.
The song BWP, man if they just cut it by 3 or 4 minutes it could end up to be one of my all time favs. The ending (that acoustic part) does virtually nothing for me. But yeah that first Edge Of Sanity like acoustic part just rules. MAYH is easily Opeth's darkest album. I'll listen to BWP, Still Life, Deliverance (thanks my trusty IPOD) as I nod off to sleep, and most times the music can help me drift off to sleep. When I put MAYH on this whole different darkness comes over me. It's by no means an easy listen. |

All of Opeth's albums have an either autumn or winter vibe for me. |
Kewl Avatar, Jude.
Anyhow, I finally have my hands on my very own copy of Lamentations!!! omgomgomgomgomg Problem is I have no DVD player to play it with lol. The reason fo it: My parents told me "Why do you want a DVD player if you have no DVD's to play?" Valid excuse, but now I have a better one to have a DVD player. so this post was basically about my newest acquisition. :D:D:D |
Upper Right: Seems like "mikael" to me. Go figure.
Lopez' signatures are the ones on the left, but I can't tell which one's whose. |
Bottom left is Mikeal, I'm wearing a signed shirt from him right now.
I can get the others for you tomorrow, I have a signed ticket upstairs. |
I'm just merging this with the Opeth thread, guys.

Dulsay!
Don't triggers just make the drums sound more even or something? That's what I heard anyway
Triggers essentially detect when the drum has been hit and output a pre-recorded sound...kinda like electronic drums except that you hit real drums. They are useful for providing more audible bass notes at high speeds and are commonly used on bass drums for extreme metal acts. What this means is that, regardless of how hard or soft you hit the drum, it will always produce the exact same sound over the PA. |
