your name shows you have taste
And your avatar shows you have taste.

I have been a Flecktones fan for a while, and Wooten really inspired me too start playing bass about 6 months ago. I just wish I could get down that ****ed slap n pop!

i have a lesson in the lessons section on slapping like wooten

woowoowooten23 03-11-2005 11:45 PM

I know what to do, my brain sends the signals down to my fingers, and it just sort of gets lost in the nerves.

If I give it time and practice I'll probably get it. I never tried that Double slap+pop though, sounds pretty cool.

DaveSavesTheDay 03-11-2005 11:47 PM

Quatre , your article just made my quest for being able to slap, possible. Thank you.

DaveSavesTheDay 03-11-2005 11:53 PM

I totally agree about the pick. It just feels all wrong playing bass with a pick!

I have 2 problems.

1. I dont really get your tecqnique. Do you sort of slap in a downwards motion ( to end up on th string bellow )
2. When i slap on an open string i hear it , when i slap on a string with a fret pushed down , I dont hear anything.

Omega Red 03-12-2005 12:18 AM

well thats not me playing.

But I do strike with a downward stroke about 90% of the time there are always exceptions. Its less of a turning in and more of a turning down. It has some thumb to pinky wrist rocking, as opposed to the thumb moving in to slap and the pinky moving out rotation. slap down and through the string so that you land on the string below.

I dont know whats wrong with your second problem

fatbandit 03-12-2005 04:55 AM

Thanks for confusing me Quatre, I was always taught that the thumb should bounce back up from the string when you slap. Man, I have such a hard time slapping, and I can't for the life of me work out why. I'm not too bothered, it'd just be a nice touch.

gaslight 03-12-2005 05:35 AM

I have a really messy slap technique but it works for me.

bassist-bmxer 03-12-2005 06:48 AM

yeah so do i.

kilian 03-12-2005 07:16 AM

I don't slap that much.. Never actually, I am trying to work on that now.. But I never use that with my band(s). I am more like: fingerstyle!

gaslight 03-12-2005 07:18 AM

Yeah, I'm mainly a fingerstyle player. I love a good slap line though.

kilian 03-12-2005 07:20 AM

Oh I like a good slap line, but then it has to be really GOOD.

Right now my bass is a bit messed up :upset:
A string - D doesn't sound the same as open D string
my bass is in tune and the 12th fret harmonic and the 12th fret fretted sound the same.. I don't know what it is

gaslight 03-12-2005 07:25 AM

Sometimes the open note and fretted note will sound a bit different. If it's a REALLY big difference it could be an intonation issue.

Arrakakaka 03-12-2005 07:33 AM

It could be the brand of strings too.Mine doesn't sound too different, but there's a bit of one.
Another thing;I have 2 basses. An Ibanez GTR200 and a Fender P-Bass.My P-Bass's plate started to crack because of the cord, and then i accidently hit the cord which ripped the plugger thingy right out and took a couple of wires with it

PaulR 03-12-2005 07:35 AM

Left Shoe 03-12-2005 07:40 AM

i have a concert band competition today, huzzah

PaulR 03-12-2005 07:48 AM

Concert band comeptition?

Sounds cool, what do you have to do?

Left Shoe 03-12-2005 08:02 AM

select a class to compete in C , B , A , or AA. C is easiest AA is the hardest you can og at the high school level. thats what we are competing in AA. you play a select piece (and like 5 other bands in your class play tyhe same piece ) and you get judged on that, then oyu play two other pieces of similar dificulty. and recieve a rating of I II, III, VI, or V. V i is worst, we usually get 1's or 2's. then after that you and your band have to go into this room where they just put a piece of music in front of you and you sight read it as an ensemble for another rating.
