Raayl only smiles after the kill.
He may be dead but the majority of players these days still can't play a lot of his stuff.

And I don't mean they haven't learn it, or they can't be bothered, I mean they do not have the technical facility to achieve it.
You're mistaken if you think the majority of bass players hold Jaco up on a pedestal of what a bass player should be. Sure he was a great player, technically (his musicality is entirely subjective), but that doesn't mean I want to play anything like him. And, no, I don't have the technical facility to play his stuff, either. If I wanted to, I'd probably learn how, but the vast majority of the stuff Jaco did is not relevant to productive use of the instrument.

fatbandit 01-21-2010 06:50 PM

I'd rather listen to Evil Empire and bask in wonderfully constructed riff based rock with awesome tone than listen to any Jaco stuff.

But I couldn't touch the way Jaco played. I won't lose sleep over it.

Fixed.

Bought a new audio interface today (incoming pictures ofc):

Class A preamps mother ****er.

Only cost me 550NZD (about 390ish USD) and it looks like it's in mint condition. Never been rack mounted either so no scratches!

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 06:59 PM

Ben, I get where you're coming from and everything, but your argument would be much more valid if you weren't currently digging "Them Crooked Vultures"

Seriously dude? A combination of Nirvana, Zep, the Foo Fighters, and QOTSA? I challenge you to name an animal whose feces I would rather not eat than listen to any of those bands.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:07 PM

At the end of the day I just think it's really weak when people write off something that is well beyond their level just because they "don't want to learn it" or they "don't like how it sounds". There's play time and there's serious time and practise time is serious time. What's the point of making excuses just to keep in your comfort zone? That's hugely counter-productive to developing your playing.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 07:19 PM

Something about how awesome Flea is and the best in the world.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 07:25 PM

While we're shitcanning Jaco, I love this song.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:25 PM

Flea is a good bass player.

Nothing on Fieldy though.

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 07:33 PM

Yo, on the real, RHCP is a steaming pile of ****. But Flea did play bass on Deloused, and for that he has a place in my heart.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 07:37 PM

I like RHCP. BSSM is an awesome album.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:42 PM

I like them too.

Flea and Chad are a solid rhythm section and have really developed over the years. Sloppy and frantic back in the day, maturing into a smoother groove unit.

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 07:43 PM

Yeah it only took them what 45 years

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:43 PM

Raayl, in the absence of a weights bench, is it advisable to try and do bench presses using an EZ curl bar and a swiss ball?

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:44 PM
Yeah it only took them what 45 years
Well I guess we'll see how long it takes you and compare.

Jesus Christ no, you'll bend backwards at your lower-back if you don't slide off and decapitate yourself first.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:45 PM

Haha yeah I wasn't going to do it it would be pretty suicidal.

Bouncy and suicidal.

I kind of wanted his glib

several line response

telling me it was retarded

then SOMETHING IN CAPS

(Kid at my high school actually did something very similar decapitation-wise).

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 07:47 PM

oh my bad i thought you were serious =(

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 07:51 PM

I don't do anything but cardio. I'd post pics but then I remembered I'm a skinny white guy and the only exercise of merit I do is moving cartons of beer around at work all day.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:53 PM
oh my bad i thought you were serious =(
Nah man I appreciate your concern :).

I do use my swiss ball for lying dumbell flys but it seems to be safe enough.

I really need to do cardio but I don't want to jack my knees in doing running on the sidewalks around here. I'm thinking of either exercise biking it or swimming laps.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 07:53 PM

I use my swiss ball to stretch my back because it gets absolutely destroyed at work :\

BenJammin 01-21-2010 07:56 PM

I actually don't like any of the bands on their own, but there's something about the album I dig.

I'm aware my taste in music sucks.

gaslight 01-21-2010 07:56 PM

They're wicked comfy for that.

I sit on it for playstation playing too.

It's my happy place.

I haven't gotten around to checking out the Them Crooked Vultures album but I'd really like to hear John Paul Jones going at it. I still groove on Zeppelin on a weekly basis. It's so good to play those tunes live in a room and hear just how fat the riffs really are, the recordings don't always do justice.

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:03 PM

Okay I'm not stoned but I just freaked myself out and you guys can please help it's kind of interesting.

Outstretch your hand fully and measure the distance from your wrist to the tip of your middle finger. Compare this to the distance between your wrist and elbow. What kind of proportional relationship is normal?

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 08:04 PM

The funny part is that I'm sure 95% of the population would absolutely hate the music I listen to.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:08 PM

1:3

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:09 PM

So my hand should be one third of the distance from my wrist to elbow? That can't be right.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:09 PM

Actually I think 1:2 for that kind of break. 1:3 is like finger joints, hand span to arm length, etc.

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:10 PM

My hand outstretched is like 2/3 of wrist to elbow length.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:11 PM

Well you have big hands? haha. Wrist-to-finger should be approximately 1/3 of your total arm length. Shoulder to wrist.

BassVirtuoso 01-21-2010 08:12 PM
My hand outstretched is like 2/3 of wrist to elbow length.
Same...

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:13 PM

^^^

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:13 PM

Well that's two of us so hopefully that makes it normal.

Wrist bone to tip of my outstretched middle finger is 7.5" but same part of wrist bone to approximately my elbow is 11". Haha.

It's just tripping me out 'cause I wouldn't have guessed the proportions were like that.

Bodies are funny.

Dead right about wrist to finger being 1/3 of total arm length.

Mad interesting.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:14 PM

I'm telling you to do shoulder to wrist, not elbow to wrist. Stop doing it wrong.

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:23 PM

What? I did shoulder to wrist and told you that you were dead right, shoulder to wrist is more or less three times wrist to finger.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:24 PM
What? I did shoulder to wrist and told you that you were dead right, shoulder to wrist is more or less three times wrist to finger.
Oh I didn't see that at first. You ninja-edit'd.

Yeap, I proved myself right.

gaslight 01-21-2010 08:28 PM

Haha yes quite possible I do usually njina edit a post three or four times before I'm done.

Not this one though.

funkyhoney 01-21-2010 08:31 PM

Ah well, I'm just happy I found evidence. I knew I was right somehow. I think an old doco I saw. I remember because Liz Hurley was in it, and she's like, totally hot.
