Well, RCA isn't online anymore, so...
Anyway, hi. Haven't seen you for a while. :)
Yah, I've been busy with finals recently... a computer engineering Vocats and two honors biology/geometry EOCs(endofcoursetests) didn't leave me with much free time, not to mention all the end of the year gatherings. Now that I'm off on break I'll try and post in here more :) In other news, my girlfriend is off to Ireland for 2 weeks tommorow morning... tis a sad day :( |
It'll be something to with the fact that they're both really boring and really popular, I think. A couple of other people I know feel that way, anyway.
They are indeed really popular. Ever since Eleventeen started liking them as way to shrug off the KoRn insults I knew they were headed for trouble. And they are NOT boring!! |
They are indeed really popular. Ever since Eleventeen started liking them as way to shrug off the KoRn insults I knew they were headed for trouble.
And they are NOT boring!!
More like Slowpeth, amirite? |
In other news, my girlfriend is off to Ireland for 2 weeks tommorow morning... tis a sad day
I feel for you...my girlfriend leaves for Spain and Italy for a month in July. Also, allow me to again state that I like Opeth...that's how freakin' mainstream they are (by metal standards). |
They are indeed really popular. Ever since Eleventeen started liking them as way to shrug off the KoRn insults I knew they were headed for trouble.
And they are NOT boring!!
In his/their opinion, of course :) SubtleDagger dislikes them because they're boring/slow, for example. |
ATM: You loser.
Agreed. |
Is madey really in any position to call someone a loser?
She is dating a wigger, after all :p |
In his/their opinion, of course :)
SubtleDagger dislikes them because they're boring/slow, for example.
Yeah, well, fine. I've never liked Subtledagger since him and Jared tricked me into thinking they were the same person, so bleh. /not as serious as that of course. :p I guess you'd be the same kind of person that would dislike Sigur Ros if slow and boring is criteria for disliking Opeth. |
I saw Madey's boyfriend's scrobbler.
/muffles laughter |
Is madey really in any position to call someone a loser?
She is dating a wigger, after all :p
Ouch, that's an extremely good point. :) |
I don't know for sure, but based on his inactivity (his last post was 5/26) I would say he is on vacation now.

Does anyone know where to get Midi files that are just the Drums and the Vocals?

I too, am curious as to the reason for the Opeth hate.
Well, sorry. Another opinion change here, I thought Opeth was a metal band when I was forced to listen to them today. Now I realize that they aren't, so the reason that I hate them is totally invalidated. |

What do you mean? |
Gah! I share all this music on IM and all I ask is that you just take it and don't annoy me about the music you take. If you want to just talk about music that's cool, but don't ask me about the music I share. So of course, some douchebag has started taking from me which I don't mind but he always asks what this band is like and which album is best. I have told him god knows how many times to stop asking me and consult metal-archives but he refuses. I feel bad blocking him because I didn't pay for the music and like to do people this favor but he is so annoying, even after I told him the rules.
And I love Opeth. Easy to listen to metal that isn't super simple. Their greatest flaw though is a lack of interesting fills and little nuances. They just repeat everything as is x number of times with no cool guitar fill or anything. |
Well, sorry. Another opinion change here, I thought Opeth was a metal band when I was forced to listen to them today. Now I realize that they aren't, so the reason that I hate them is totally invalidated.
How are they not a metal band? |
Well, sorry. Another opinion change here, I thought Opeth was a metal band when I was forced to listen to them today. Now I realize that they aren't, so the reason that I hate them is totally invalidated.
So you were blindly hating them only because they're metal? |
How are they not a metal band?
I hope we don't get another tr00ness invasion. I think RCA's better than that. |
So you were blindly hating them only because they're metal?
No. He thought they were metal, so he thought that they were a very bad metal band. When he heard them they werent tr00 enough so hes saying they arent metal, and that makes them better. |
I hope we don't get another tr00ness invasion. I think RCA's better than that.
I would hope so... But to call Opeth a non-metal band is kinda weird...I mean weather you like them or not, they are a metal band. NP - Enslaved - Isa (this is way better then the stuff I heard from them previously...and the clean vocals in the song reminds me of Lars from Solefald) |
^I remember 12oz telling me about this new Enslaved album, that may well be the best album ever, when it was first released.
Also, you should all listen to Gang of Four. |
What do you mean?
Well, as my brother blasted his Opeth albums all day today, he tried endlessly to convince me that 1) Opeth were good and 2) That they were intriguing, different, something new, and heavy metal. So the day goes on, and I'm sitting in his room trying to understand this "great" band. I'm waiting for a monster riff, something heavy and catchy, waiting for that Mikael dude to do something awesome with his voice that is in-line with what's being played under him. Needless to say, I sat there listening to acoustic ballads for about a half an hour. Then, out of nowhere, I hear distortion. Not an actual heavy metal riff, just distortion. It sounded like the guitarist shat out a bad 70's rock riff while he had his friend vomit in the background. This went on for about another 4 hours, and every twenty minutes they stop to let out some acoustic stuff. The band just didn't know when to stop. Random musical happenings still going on in the form of Opeth's music, and something good finally happens. They play another mediocre "distortion riff", but as soon as I got annoyed by it, it stopped. Looks like Mikael Akerfeldt will be getting a chocolate bunny come Easter! Next I hear a solo. It was good; it had some feeling and wasn't wanked out like a sex addict's boner when he has blue-balls and no pussy is around. The thing was though, the rhythm underneath it was in another key, an sounded horrendous. The key to a good solo is having a competent rhythm placement under it. Sure, amazing fretwork and creativity will get you places as a lead guitarist, but the rhythm can also make or break a lead part. It sure has hell broke the good streak that song had. Then, my brother pops in Opeth's Damnation album. With a title like that, I thought the bad times would take hike for a bit. Wrong. Since when does a good heavy fucking metal band put you to sleep? The genre is about killing poseurs, drinking beer, and deflowering volumptuous (Did I spell it wrong? Lick my hairy scrotum, infidel) maidens. Not about singing a fucking lullaby. So my brother failed to convince me that Opeth were good, and the lack of strong heavy riffage and the over-abundance of unnecessary acoustic parts showed me that Opeth were no metal band (going back to my previous post, when I said I don't hate them for not being metal). All in all, I didn't have a good listening experience with Opeth. Maybe one day the band will get kicked in the balls, or Lemmy Kilmister will show up at their house and slap them with Sacrifice. In the mean time, I'll be listening to some Running Wild. Oh God. I sound like Dargon. :upset: |
No. He thought they were metal, so he thought that they were a very bad metal band. When he heard them they werent tr00 enough so hes saying they arent metal, and that makes them better.
If I hear the word tr00 one more time, I'm napalming Scandinavia. |
Hmm, well I'm certainly extremely curious as to what song you listened to. I'm sorry your response to their music was so vomit-inducing, but on the other hand I never really gave a **** about genre-based integrity, only artistic integrity. I hate sell-outs as much as the next person, for instance, but I never care when something classified as being of a genre steps out of it for a while.
If the distortion album that he played for you was Morningrise, all questions are answered. That album is full of good riffs, but is an incredibly overrated album as a whole: drums suck, vocals suck, transitions suck, time wankage is overabundant, and overall the songs have very little flow and form. I will forgive you if your response was to that album, as it's very amateur compared to where they are now. I'm afraid I will not be able to understand any of these criticisms if you made them while listening to My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, or Blackwater Park. EDIT: And the album ****ation, while by a metal band, is not a metal album. Nor are Opeth claiming it to be such, nor are any knowledgeable fans of the band. It is an exposure to their "lighter side," and I happen to also consider it overrated. |
Given that the listening went on for some four hours or so, I think it was probably more than one album.
|
Given that the listening went on for some four hours or so, I think it was probably more than one album.
Until that's corroborated, I'm assuming that that was an exaggeration borne of extreme agitation. |
I can't remember the album titles, except for Damnation.
Simply put, when I'm told I'll be listening to "one of the greatest heavy metal bands ever" by my brother (who knows what is metal and what isn't), I expect something that is rotten to the core in the best sense of the word. Exciting songs, with great structure and coherence, with a little or great bit of mayhem. EDIT: I've got an idea, Cain. Can you make a short list of your favorite Opeth songs, so I can go d/l them and give them a more in-depth listen? I don't want that long rant of mine to be my final judgement if I really truly was missing something important about Opeth's music. |

Exciting songs, with great structure and coherence, with a little or great bit of mayhem.
Mayhem is lacking, and I suppose it depends on what you find exciting. But structure and coherence? Plenty of their songs have great structure and coherence. But if you listened to any tracks off of Morningrise or Orchid (the former of which is actually the most-worshipped album of all of theirs, so I'd be willing to bet that if your brother's a fan of the band he played that album for you a lot) then your problems lie with them, as they are very amateur compared to their current offering. I still think they're great, flawed, and I don't care. I'm not going to pull a "Creed fan gambit" if Opeth becomes the next Shadows Fall: they opened my mind up to a new world of metal and have done the same for a lot of other fans, and deserve credit. Beyond that, to each his own. :thumb: |
This is quite the absurd statement here :
Then, my brother pops in Opeth's ****ation album. With a title like that, I thought the bad times would take hike for a bit. Wrong. Since when does a good heavy ****ing metal band put you to sleep? The genre is about killing poseurs, drinking beer, and deflowering volumptuous (Did I spell it wrong? Lick my hairy scrotum, infidel) maidens. Not about singing a ****ing lullaby.
So metal is about murdering people who don't listen to "tr00" metal, drinking beer to the point where you cannot speak or stand and putting your cock rod into another being of the opposite sex that has never had sex before? Interesting to say the least, it sounds like something that would come out of an immature teenager that is extremely horny. There is more to music then those ideas, and there is more to life then that as well. Now I can see where Varg get's his whole idea of "nigger music" is what metal has turned into. This is a prime example...but if you think that's what metal is about, you need to grow the hell up and stop living in the lust of a 14 year old trying to be a "rebel". Sure, you may not like them, but they are a metal band and they do something called "experimentation" in their music, such as the album Damnation. I can understand your diasppointment in their music, since it is a bit over hyped from big fanboys of the band, but I think that does not give you the right to say such lame statements that keep the stereotyping of metalheads going... |
What he said
Well, the attitude that the stuff I listen to definitely displays those kinds of characteristics. I was just thinking that this would be the same, just not as outright. Of course I don't think ALL metal is like that, I was just kinda disappointed that I had to sit through that all day. |
Gah! I share all this music on IM and all I ask is that you just take it and don't annoy me about the music you take. Before it gets drowned in flames. I hope I haven't disappointed any of you, I don't want you people to hate me (although I can't say I didn't see it coming if it turns out that way). :upset: It's late, g'night everyone. |

I just hate the whole metal stereotyping thing...which that kind of statement helps it... |
today had a very lame turn out of events in store for me. blarghhhhhh

Oh my god, an argument here that I did not instigate.

I just hate the whole metal stereotyping thing...which that kind of statement helps it...
hey all... may as well have just stayed up... the stereotyping thing doesn't work because you can't take two randomly genred metal bands and say they are lyrically the same are iced earth the same as vader? no... are iced earth the same as blind gaurdian, even? no! I have never really listened to opeth, not because I hate them, I just have alot of metal to listen to and not nearly enough time to do it in but what I do know is that they seem tobe vital for getting people who don't listen to DM into it (being reasonably melo-death as they are) same goes for at the gates and arch enemy too it doesn't matter if a band are tr00 or not to me anyway 'cause there are alot of different kinds of metal and they are all different... It would be amusing to have lemmy come round their house though... and Valk, enlighten us with your bad day? |

Yes but ICB was a member for longer than anybody yet I wouldn't expect a tr00 outburst from him |
