I don't think it being well-recieved bothers them entirely. Obviously I think the fact that it dissapointed so fans did upset them but 'Tallica have pretty much always done what they want. And if they involves continuing down the St. Anger vein then I imagine that's what they will do.

Re-learning the old songs must have inspired some old school riffs, and i'm pretty sure Rob will come up with some heavy stuff

Didn't he say in the documentary film that he wanted solos so that he wouldn't be cropped with al the other bands out now? I never actually saw the film, but I did hear that quote.

its in an interview i have in an issue of Kerrap!, the fans ask them questions. One of them was "how come there are no solos on the album?" He answered that he felt it didnt fit the music, then added if some one asked that one more time he would scream :p

What kinda annoys me is when people say they sold out with the Black album, Load etc yet they were already progressing musically, it just so happens in the 90's it was a huge change of musical direction. Cliff Burton even said in future they might experiment with softer sounds.

I dislike the term Sold-out itself. I use it as a kind of ironic insult now, based around someting James said in one of the MTV Icon interviews:
