I live in an area where alternative music is just not something many people know about.
Planet of Ice got an A- from the AV Club, usually a pretty good review site :)

dei 08-29-2007 07:22 PM

Planet of Ice got like a 0.2 on Pitchfork.

YDload 08-29-2007 07:22 PM

more like a 7.2 (owned)

Glitterati 08-29-2007 07:44 PM

At my high school alternative music meant Audioslave, Muse, and Jack Johnson.

sexymuffin 08-29-2007 08:06 PM

man you are so much better than them

iarescientists 08-29-2007 08:20 PM

make a thread about it!

Iai 08-29-2007 08:36 PM

'I like alternative music' = 'I own a copy of OK Computer'.

Literally, this was the alternative culture at my high school. Most of the people in my high school didn't even have the internet when I was there though, except the seriously rich kids, and they kinda didn't need to be a part of the alternative scene.

That makes me feel so old.

sweboy 08-29-2007 08:39 PM

Iai, before there was Internet, did you guys use homing pigeons to chat?

nobody in my school listened to anything more alternative than Tool or The White Stripes (at least until i found ATDI in my senior year)

its not TOO much different in this rural college town but i do find the occasional cool iTunes library

br3ad_man 08-29-2007 08:57 PM

No one at my school listened to anything other than Nelly. Or maybe The Strokes.

Apocalyptic Raids 08-29-2007 09:00 PM

most people at my school listened to mainstream rap, pop and/or rock, pretty standard teenager stuff really. although these days from what i've seen quite a few are into arctic monkeys, the strokes, bloc party etc

br3ad_man 08-29-2007 09:08 PM

Yeah some people at my school were into Wolfmother.

Anus Invader 08-29-2007 09:17 PM

everyone at my school was into stuff like Dispatch Sublime Slightly Stoopid all that reggaeish jammish broish stuff. but i sent stuff to all my friends on aim and when people liked it caught on. i turned people onto Ratatat, Air, American Football, Pinback, Broken Social Scene.. those were mainly the bands that caught on with them and after a while i stopped sending people bands that i discovered because our tastes moved apart a little bit. my friends from high school cant listen to anything with the least bit of aggression or noise

Iai 08-29-2007 09:24 PM

Yeah, that's what PM means - Pidgeon Messaging.

br3ad_man 08-29-2007 09:27 PM

I think my rep has like doubled in the last 3 days and I have no idea why.

i didnt like American Football when you first introduced me but now i like them because i've disconnected them from you in my mind :)

Anus Invader 08-29-2007 09:33 PM

oh good! glad that worked for you! :)

aaat my jr highschool prople were pritty much into rap and hip hpo and that pop stuff but now at my high school i'm pritty sure there is a large quanty of people who don;t care if their music's cool all they care about is that if they like it or not! i think it's cool!

Thanks 08-30-2007 01:21 AM

My high school had a lot of fans of alternative music, and our music scene is incredible.

For example, I could name at least 5 kids I went to high school with who have heard of the Mae Shi, who grace our current listening party.

Arctic monkeys and bloc party are pop music. I still like them.

My school was either pop or System of a down/tool crowds. We didn't really have much metal heads besides the odd bogan metallica fanboy. I suppose NZ is hardly a metal hotbed though

masada 08-30-2007 05:01 AM

most of my school listens to lil' wayne or korn

big80smullet 08-30-2007 05:24 AM

Even the "alternative" kids at my school weren't into anything that alternative. Very straigtht and narrow. I didn't start getting ionto "good" music till i left school.

dei 08-30-2007 08:46 AM

I coined the term "indie."

pulseczar 08-30-2007 08:57 AM

i came up with the title for Suddenly Susan

I would've never thought that anywhere in the U.P. would have a good music scene. I don't know why I assumed this.

better than mainstream indie/alternative tbh

A Dead Modernist 08-30-2007 12:57 PM

Most people listen to Hinder, Three Days Grace, Nickelback , 311 etc. at my school. So I talk to very few people about music.

asdf 08-30-2007 01:31 PM

I love my college radio station. It's almost always good.

Liebensaft 08-30-2007 01:43 PM

I like XMU channel 43 and occasionally Ethel channel 47. On XM satellite radio, that is. I haven't heard a regular radio station playing music I like in a long time.

This post is flawless.

Anxious 08-30-2007 01:53 PM

There was an indie radio station sponsoring the Blonde Redhead show a few weeks ago, but apparently I don't get it.

sexymuffin 08-30-2007 02:03 PM

yeah blonde redhead promotion goes over most people's heads

Anxious 08-30-2007 02:08 PM

And the station reception also.

Glitterati 08-30-2007 02:39 PM

Most people at my school listened to metal or christian rock, not too many people were into indie stuff.

I mentioned the Pixies once and this bro said "they sound like some sort of chick band."

Hopefully I meet cooler people at college.

edit - I found out yesterday I got accepted, I start Tuesday :-D

iarescientists 08-30-2007 02:41 PM

where?

Zmev 08-30-2007 02:50 PM

Glitterati 08-30-2007 02:52 PM
