Experts please help

Hey guys my names Dan and Im new here. Ive been playing guitar now for several years and am very skilled and can play a lot of sweet difficult songs. The problem is that my first guitar teacher was a total retard and didnt teach his students anything about theory, progressions, scales etc... Then about a year ago I switched to a new guitar teacher who is very good and has been thorugh univeristy for music etc. The thing is every summer I stop playing guitar and pretty much lose the skill and then gain it back when I start lessons again. The only reason I feel I do this is because I am bored now of playing the same stuff over and over again, or playing things that do not sound good to me. Most music produced nowadays is too easy to learn. I've learnt pretty much every solo from Metallica and I like thier sound... could anyone give me some tabs that have a really heavy sounding song and a good difficult good sounding solo?
Also, since I went into my second teacher with no theory experience he did not force it on me because I would get bored and quit guitar... I started it for about a month (30 mins a week per lesson :( ) and I sort of got a rough idea. So Im just going to write the basis of what I learnt and could anyone correct it or add to it please...
there are many scales, most songs start with a basic scale, the notes played in that scale are the progression, and they are continued throughout the song with small variations etc... Does anyone know where I can get a good tutorial (for free) that can take me from beginner theory to writing my own good songs? That would be awesome.
Also, what is the basic noice for heavy songs/hardcore... like not barchords right? like in the main parts of the songs. As you can see my knowledge for timing and theory do not really exist... and I just time by hearing the sogn and then playing it.

Also what are some good tricks that are used in heavy metal/hardcore songs, like pinch harmonics etc... So since I blabbered on with about a paragraph for each question Ill just restate for anyone who doesnt want to hear me whine about how I cant write anything lol.

1. What are some good rock solo's that sounds really good (i.e. Sultans of Swing solo #1, #2... Any Metallica solo pretty much)?
2. Where can I get a good tutorial (for free) that will take me from beginner but has a rough understanding of theory to writing my own skilled riffs?
3. What is the basis for writing a song? Follow a scale, use the notes you played as a progression, have that whole song follow your progression with little variations?
4. What are some tricks used alot in heavy metal/hardcore songs ex. Pinch Harmonic and how do you do them (include pinch harmonic)

Alright thanks alot for reading this post and I hope I put it in the right spot. Thx
-Dan

This is not the thread for asking things like that and it should have really gone in the guitar forum :).

Permanent Solution 08-16-2005 10:37 AM

I'd recommend copying and pasting that in a new thread in Guitar, you'll get more and better responses there.

Well, he did state why he didn't like the band and gave reasons. He is keeping within the rules. If he starts blatantly flaming the band without reason then something can be done.

One of the links in the Rules are not up to date:

Song name, lyrics, and unknown bands music request thread. I guess a mod deleted it.

Thanks :)

i would like to report a rule that has been broken. the rule no using best. Best albums 2005: Halfway .

Iai 08-17-2005 12:17 AM

That one is at least promoting a little intelligent discussion. I'm not so sure it should be closed, even though it does technically break a rule, and there's unlikely to be any more albums mentioned that haven't been already. But hey, mods call.

As ever, sticky please. :)

Can we have this thread turned into the Official Porcupine Tree thread? The band has a pretty big fan-base here, and would only gain popularity as a result of this.

Here's the thread:
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=355581&highlight=porcupine

Iai 08-17-2005 12:27 AM

For all intents and purposes, that IS the Ofiicial Porcupine Tree thread. If anyone makes a new thread they'll be directed to that and their thread will likely be locked.

It doesn't need the tag, and anyway, I think all the mods and regulars are dead set against having any more Official threads. Sorry.
