Well I mean of course you'd go to see them because of their music, but I would probably get bored after a while if they didn't do at least a little something. I was just watching them play "This Dying Soul" on some Youtube video and they really didn't move at all for several minutes.

While they are all very good at their instruments, they really need to work on their showmanship.
I disagree, a Dream Theater show is all about the music, and in that department they are incredible, a band doesn't need to run around the stage to put on a great show. They aren't really as static as people make out, LaBrie does a great job of getting the crowd going, and the shows have great light and video shows. I don't remember ever hearing anyone saying they went to a Dream Theater show and they got bored (despite the shows being 3 hours long).

I agree. When I went to the concert, I was so into it that I lost track of time. I was really disappointed that it was over, not because it was boring or I wished they played a better song off of ToT, but because it was over and I will have to wait to see them again.
Did anyone else know Portnoy is doing a couple of shows with Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and Gary Cherone as a tribute to The Who at the end of May?
Yeah, Portnoy has organised and performed 4 tribute acts now, with various musicians (Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Who). I think CDs/DVDs of these might be available on mikeportnoy.com.

JonG 04-15-2006 11:23 PM

This is pretty random, but I was messin' around and found that Ytse Jam is Majesty backwards, which was there old band before DT..

Anyways...Ytse Jam was one of the first songs I heard by DT.

Lord Abortion 04-16-2006 04:09 AM

Yeah, Portnoy is in Hammer of the Gods, a led zep tribute band, and Yellow custard(I think) A Beatles one.
The Spirit carries on is my favourite track off SFAM, but I love all that album, it's truly amazing.

Nah I don't think they're boring live.
They move a bit though. Labrie's been more on stage this tour, jumping about and stuff, Mike's always a a show off and even Myung's been moving about a bit like playing Petrucci's guitar with one hand and playing his bass with the other.

Rudess just smiles a lot. And spins. Gotta love it.

classicrockman 04-16-2006 10:08 AM

If you wannna go see a great stage show but not really great music...go see Kiss. If you wanna hear great music but not have the best stage show...go see Dream Theater.

I'll take Dream Theater.

Wow, I never noticed that.

Jev 04-16-2006 01:00 PM

Me neither until a friend told me.

3rdplanet 04-16-2006 04:13 PM

I was  'd when I spotted the Ytse Jam thingy too.
Hmmm...I probably can't speak for everyone cause I've never listened to Jame's solo album or Transatlantic but Liquid Tension Experiment is AWESOME. John Petrucci's 'Suspended Animation' record is very good also.
I'm already a fan of LTE and was kinda wondering about other side projects they had. I think I'll try just downloaded some random solo/side project stuff from the band.

It's so nice to hear Floyd with decent drumming, Portnoy just spruced those tracks up for me.

Triangle 04-16-2006 04:57 PM

Transatlantic's alright until you realise you're listening to an album consisting of 20-30+min long songs. :-/

ghettoeddo 04-16-2006 08:10 PM

james's solo stuff is really incredible. seriously, i highly recommend it.

song strucutre is all prety much the same, but it's easy listening compared to DT's stuff.

i think DT moves more for DVD filming shows than other shows. i saw em on gigantour, and htis last tour and when i compare that to DVD's, the difference is there.

but i sure as hell wasn't bored and i was in row 28. even my friends who didnt know a single song said it was the most amazing show they've ever been to.

bwnstl 04-17-2006 12:51 AM

As for side projects, I'd definitely say the top two are OSI's first album and LTE1.

Jev 04-17-2006 04:31 AM

Osi?

Lord Abortion 04-17-2006 06:21 AM

LTE are excellent, though.

Jev 04-17-2006 06:22 AM

Indeed but they do get a little boring after a while.
But then again. They made those albums in week sessions.

bwnstl 04-17-2006 11:58 AM
Osi?
Office of Strategic Influence?

With Kevin Moore?

Jev 04-17-2006 12:03 PM

Oh.
I've not heard them.

I thought it was called Ytsejam cause it would be like Its a Jam, and since the song is instrumental it could be a jam... anyway, the huge DT fan of my friend told me it was Majesty backwards.
