I agree that Marooned is a beautiful instrumental. I love that whole album.

Breathe is a really amazing song, but hardly anyone mentions it when they name good Pink Floyd songs.
I really like how it leads right into On the Run.

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 06:34 PM

Definitely. Every song on that album is brilliant.
Who agrees Marooned is a beautiful instrumental :)
I do, excellent guitar work in it :thumb:

lunch998 12-16-2004 06:44 PM

I think if Brain Damage and Eclipse were one song, it would be known as one of the greatest Floyd songs. Most people not listening to the album will just hear Brain Damage with no Eclipse, which is a shame.

Breathe is actually one of my favorite PF songs, despite it being short, it's a short beautiful overlooked song on DSotM. The lyrics and vocals are quite chilling.

lunch998 12-16-2004 06:48 PM

"All you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be."

I love that line.

Ditto! That's the main one that sends shivers up and down my spine... wow.. it's scary, but awesome. Also "Long you live and High you'll fly, only if you ride the tide, balanced on the biggest wave, and racing towards an early grave"... is another great line from that song.

I LOVE Breathe. One of my favorite songs on DSOTM, after Time and Any Colour You Like. It just sounds so cool. And the slide part is really creepy, but it rules.

And I think Dogs is one of the tougher songs to learn. I took it in to my guitar teacher, and every chord switch actually changes the scale he's using. This is probably cause its in an open tuning. BUT, that means that if you're soloing over it, you're making constant scale changes to accomodate for the new chords. Kinda tough to do.

Riva 12-16-2004 10:40 PM

Brain Damage and Eclipse = some of the best lyrics and song-writing I have heard Pink Floyd produce.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-16-2004 10:49 PM
A lot of the songs have amazing lead work. They're also not too technically difficult, although if you want to get the Gilmour tone out of them, and play them as well as he does, that'll take some work. Try going with something like Time or Comfortably Numb, or maybe Money. I just figured out the chords to Breathe yesterday, I'm stoked. I love that song.
Allright, I'll check out Time, Money, Breathe, and Dogs some time. :upset: That's a wee bit overwhelming for my 6 months of experience, but..I'll do it if I get bored enough on Xmas break.

Riva 12-16-2004 10:51 PM

I learnt stuff of of the Wall first. You know, Another Brick In The Wall, etc.

Also, why not try Comfortably Numb. Not too difficult, if you can get the hang of the pattern.

I'mhungryForASandwich 12-16-2004 10:51 PM

I love the song "On The Run"

Allright, I shall. Love that song.

Riva 12-16-2004 11:05 PM

I love it too! :D

Almost as much as Run Like Hell, my current project on guitar. :)

I my self am working on "Wish You Were Here." Doh, what an awesome song. :D Quite easy on guitar, I must say.

"We're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fishbowl, year after year"

That right there has to be my favorite Floyd lyric.

Riva 12-16-2004 11:30 PM

Hehe, I love that line. I'm always singing it at work. Awesome song, probably the closest to my heart.

Yeah, I was singing it during my construction class, and at my school, singing is frowned on because it's not gangsta or whatever, so I was nailing something together, and I turn around, still singing, and there was a group of 5 guys, all dickheads, and they just start laughing at me. Then I shot them with my staple gun :D

Voodoo 12-17-2004 12:01 AM

Hey, don't normally come around these forums, but The Floyd Rocks. They got me into music.

Kingofdudes 12-17-2004 08:40 PM

well I think I will one of my latest reps with you all..

"TWAT oh look im a tit who negs for no reason, I'm gilmour, P.S Gilmour fu.cked you Floyd after waters left, BARRETT IS KING -hh"

Another little kid thinking that saying that a band's older stuff is better makes him HxC.

DeusExMachina 12-18-2004 12:42 AM

Back on topic of Breathe, I really love Breathe Reprise at the end of Time. Its such an amazing return to the song. And the lyrics are brilliant.

I bet we pissed some elitist bastard off with all this discussion about DSOTM. :D

thelizardkingcc 12-18-2004 04:20 AM

wow, ive been listening to obscured by clouds a lot more lately, and its such a great, completely underrated album. free four, childhoods end, the gold its in the..., all the songs are great...

I agree. After the chiming and faster tempo of speed, the soft sounds of breathe make an eccelent contrast
I still think the Brain Damage/Eclipse ending to DSOTM is some of the best music Floyd have ever made. It's definitely a near perfect ending to the album.
Yeah, I think that eclipse sums up the whole album

But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

Is it just me or does it really say

'there is no dark side of the moon, its all dark'

at the end in the TGGITS voiceover style.

But it is definately a near perfect album

Distant Echoes 12-18-2004 08:14 AM

There is nothing you could name in DSOTM that could be added or taken away to make it better its as close to "Perfect" as you can get.

and to hypocracy hater...after the last note and the heart beats again, turn your speaker up and you can hear a British studio guy say "THere is no Dark Side of the Moon really...as a matter a fact its all dark"

They asked a roadie, Studio Manager, and a think one of there band members several questions in the studio and put some of there answers in certain places on the CD. Those are all them guys talking you here in Speak to Me, Great Gig, Brain Damage and Eclipse

IAJP 12-18-2004 08:22 AM

I'm listening to the whole of DSOTM live now.
Jesus I love this album.

The lyrics that sum up the entire album have to be:
"No-one told you when to run...you missed the starting gun"
Then it surges into a guitar solo, and a top-class solo at that.
That has to be my favourite part of any pink floyd song.

"Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time..plans that come to either nought or half a page of scribbled lines" is pretty darn seminal too.
Heads up to every member of pink floyd, they should have legally been knighted by now:D.

I love the lyric,
"And if the dam breaks open many years to soon"
I dunno why, just sheer classic lyrics.
One of my top five..or three actually, albums of all time.

hypocracy hater 12-18-2004 08:52 AM

'And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too'

The whole albums a classic,
oh and yeah,
does anyone else get this,
when they listen to "Us And Them" they feel uplifted?
But I actually listened to the lyrics and they're completley dark:confused:, it's so great the way they've done it.

Anyway,
what a brilliant song.
I don't think there's one song I don't like off that album,
I got animals last week too, what an album.

Distant Echoes 12-18-2004 09:14 AM

Sax does drive the song, but it is a pretty dark song, about warfare it seems
And contains one of the greatest points in music history

With, Without - and who denied its what the fightings all about

God christ i love that line.

Distant Echoes 12-18-2004 09:16 AM

Animals is great too. Dogs is great, but i love Sheep more.

I love how surprised everyone is when they look at a 5 track CD and it 42 minutes long...with 2 songs only taking up 3 minutes

But i think Floyd is the only bands anyone could agree didnt realease one bad song in the entire decade of the 70s

That's true.
God I love sheep so much,
especially the intro...and the verse...and the outro.. :p

DesolationRow 12-18-2004 09:35 AM

Dogs is my all time favorite along with Shine on You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-7. One of These Days is pretty cool too. As for my favorite lyric from Floyd its probably " And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sewn. And as the fear grows, the bad blood slowly turns to stone" from Dogs. As for the sax, Dick Parry was amazing. Us and Them, Shine On, Money, and many other songs wouldn't be so great if it wasn't for that Tenor Sax. Amazing.
