Never heard anything by them before. I thought they were a goth (Bauhaus-esque, not Evanescence, etc) band though.
[b]Sisters of Mercy - 1959[/b] - 4:09

Starts off with piano, in the same tone as Fight for Freedom by Manowar - very grandiose, and with a "rich" tone to it.

Vocals come in around 0:30, and they sound very goth-y - male, I think, and also very over-the-top. Not especially bad, but strikes me as kind of stupid, and not really what I like.

Some variation in the piano around 1:05, using higher keys, and a couple of times sounds a bit dissonant, which I like.

2:30 - not much I can say so far. It's not bad, but there's not much to comment on, as it's just the piano, which seems to be just playing the same couple of phrases over and over, and the guys voice.

And there continues to be not much I can say..the song ends on his last words of "..1959" and some "dun-dun"-ing of the piano.

Well, it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. I generally like piano in songs (gonna recommend one actually), but didn't so much in this one. Wasn't much I could actually say about it, either.

Didn't like 1959? I guess the Sisters are an acquired taste. The voice definitely gets on my nerves sometime, but most of their songs make it worth listening to that. I like the piano on 1959, even if it is repetetive, it's still good.

I'm a fan of Mike Pattons work (Dillinger Escape Plan, Tomahawk, FNM etc) but I've never actually listened to any Mr. Bungle before. So, here goes...

[B]Mr. Bungle - Slowly Growing Deaf 5:36[/B]

OOOOHH! Ska intro! (*is early LTJ fan*) Suddenly after that it goes quiet, just drums, keyboards and Pattons voice, and what a voice! I've never heard this side of it before, calm, restrained emotional yet still at times mocking, dark and menacing. Then the song gathers pace, Patton putting on a nasal voice over palm muted guitar and some electronic sounds. Then another ska part! YAAAY! Nice bassline and ska guitarwork. Some singing and even a scream(!). Back to the palm muted section. I quite like this so far.
Now it has progressed into a slightly manic part, with Patton chanting "Ears are ringing" over and over. Slightly freaky. This moves into a singing section over spastic guitar noises before a repeat of the "Ears..." section and the palm muted section once more.
Finally we return to the quiet drum/keyboard/patton combo. Then the song ends.

I quite liked this, even though i was unsure at the start. The whole song was an intense mess with my head, but i sure do feel better for it.
Pattons voice was top notch throughout, and the musicianship was pretty class aswell.

I haven't listened to Mars Volta very much, so this is pretty much a first.

[B]The Mars Volta - Inertiatic ESP (Prog-Rock)[/B]

I really like the rythem on the drums and guitar. It tied the whole song together. The song had a neat overall noise makeup with lots of off chords and wails. The singer has a pretty good voice that he [I]uses[/I] . He hits some pretty strange notes as well.

[B]Pros[/B]-The piano intro was pretty smooth that led into the vocals. Then the drums kick up the emotion level in the song a notch. Add the singer to that and it gets pretty excited in the verses. The piona in the background is odd but I like it anyway. The rythem changes in guitar and layers of instruments soud really good. The lyrics are great.

[B]Cons[/B]- I think it's a tad long. It doesn't have any solos or anything to break it up so it wont seem so repetetive.

Overall I give this song an 8 out of 10.

Starts with a bass note then guitars and drums. Sounds like a good nu-metal intro. Here's the singer. He sucks. Really sucks. Very generic nu-metal singer. The guitar is actually cool here. It's a very stacatto part of power chords. I'm guessing it's the verse because that's how the formula goes. Chorus. Not as good as the verse. Super standard. I doubt this will make an impression

WAIT!!!! solo????!?!?!?! Short but it was there and pretty cool. Verse is back. I hate the singer. Then the chorus. The chorus really sucks. Nothing interesting. It's coubled this time too. There's a bridge which is pretty cool. The vocal melody is cool until he starts yelling end of days. The lyrics suck too. Chorus again. What a bad song. After the intro it just sucked.

The song starts off with some super heavy guitar playing. It also incldues some synth and background lead guitar playing, aswell as various other instruments. The vocals come in, and they're pretty low. They soon mix with some effects, which is pretty annoying. The singer then starts singing some notes in a very raspy manner. And they're sometimes combined with the effects and regular sang vocals. Interesting sound. The drumming fillsd used are okay, they do fit the music good, and do have okay timing.

A guitar solo then enters, but is kind of overshadowed by the heavy riffs. The solo isn't extroadinary, but I guess it gets the job done. The lyrics are next to impossile to understand.

Not my kind of music at all, and I just thought it was mediocre.

Brokedown Palace - The Grateful Dead

Anyways, onto the review, lads!

Brokedown Palace by The Grateful Dead...

Songs starts out very nicely, a sort of laid back intro before the singing. Very country rock; very '70s. I can picture hippies lighting up to this. The singer comes in at 0:08 sec, a smooth, clear voice. (Think '60s/'70s pop-rock). The soft strumming in the background (Acoustic) is pleasant, and I believe there is a piano as well. A second singer comes in to sing the chorus, his voice blends very well.

A soft bend on the guitar preludes the next verse. Now the back singer is whoo-ing in the background, complementing the entire song. The song continues in this same manner for most of it's length, with nothing new being added. However, the song is quite well written, and the lyrics have enough meaning to make them the focus of the song, rather than the music.

The song comes to a close with the singer and the back-up vocals combining to doo doo dooo as the music winds up. All in all a very pleasing song.

I give it 8/10. I was actually listening to In Flames before this song, so I wasn't in the right mood to recieve it. If I was just relaxing at home, I would have given it a 9/10.
I recommend it if you're in a laid back mood and just wanna chill. I think I would like to get some more The Grateful Dead, if all their songs are as soothing and well written as this one.

Starts with some pretty cool, reasonably fast, picking. It's a good start. Other instruments soon join in, after a prolonged chord in the background.

So far (1:05) this sounds a lot less serious than I was expecting for the band and title, and the description of heavy metal. Not at all bad though. Maybe it's Australian heavy metal; I'm loving the big, rolling rhythm it has.

Vocals come in at 1:13..I don't like them much. I think music like this needs a stronger voice. He kinda gets lost in the music, which is still good.

Good instrumental section now (around 2:30 onwards), heavy on the bass. I like bass. Vocals are back around 3:10. And the song just clatters along with that pretty cool instrumental work to end at 4:24, after the vocals finish once more.

That was pretty good. Not much variation though, and the vocals I thought were kind of weak. Not bad though.

[B]Beck - Hotwax[/B]

It took me a long time to get this. I've heard beck before and liked it, but I know that beck is a lot like Radiohead in that he changes his sound a lot from album to album. This is off of Odelay!, the album I've only heard one song from.

Starts with a really southern steel guitar riff. The timing is wierd, but interesting. Drums come in and accentuate the oddness of the timing, cooler now. THe drums sound almost programmed. Drum fill, new guitar part. Now it sounds more like overdriven palm mute. Bass is really loud in the mix. Hip hop bass line.
Vocals. The lyrics reflect the sound of the song. The riff in the backround is pretty cool, but quiet. Feedback sound from time to time. Another southern riff. More feedback.
A chorus I think. It has a lot of feedbacky sounds, especially on vocals.
It ends, afterchorus is an envelope filter and harmonica. Super awesome.
Verse is back. Basically the same but because it has so many little things it's ok. A different verse here. More hip hop sounding. Very cool. and the chorus. This is the king of repitition.
Harmonica/feedback solo after it. Hip hop drumming. Turntables. Electronic sounds. Beastie boy yells in the backround.
Verse again. Still cool. Piano this time! Ragtime sample in there. THe southern riff is back when the piano leaves.
Chorus again.
Outro is jazz trumpet, sonor sounds, bongos and a movie dialouge sample. Very awesome. I can feel the fade out.
Excellent song. Beck = Masterful
