I'm just wondering, what really is defined as power metal?
Good question. I guess "Iron Maiden on speed" pretty much defines power metal. Usually power metal bands are very melodic, with lots of high pitched vocals and harmonized vocals/guitar lines. They usually use a lot of palm muted 16th note riffs. Also, keyboards and orchestral/classical elements are quite common.

I hope that helps.

Steerpike 12-25-2004 12:39 AM

Don't forget that they often feature an intense, driving rhythm section and the lyrics often have a supernatural, metaphysical, or sword & sorcery theme.

RiceMonster 12-25-2004 10:31 PM

The operetic(sp?) vocals are another common element.
The operetic(sp?) vocals are another common element.
Well, I wouldn't say operatic so much as theatrical. Power metal vocalists tend to have a variety of training backgrounds, but their voices are all the kind trained to project all the way to the cheap seats.

I just descoverd the band Dark Moor. Yet another damn good power metal band. Anyone like them?

Brew 12-28-2004 12:26 PM

I'm currently waiting for an Ensiferum album to arrive in the post, I'm not sure when its going to get here which sucks :(

I'd go and see Nightwish next February but I'm in Scotland dang nabbit :(

I wonder if they'll be at Bloodstock next year...

I *hate* that band. I hate Ralf scheepers. He is a sucky vocalist if i have ever heard one. He ruined Gamma Ray on their early albums. He *does not* sound like Rob Halford. He's fat. He has no balls. He sucks the mighty suck.... And he eats babies!

Brilliant album. In my top 5 PM albums.

Brew 12-30-2004 03:15 PM

I picked up a Wintersun album yesterday, I'd say its amazing but to be fair its not.

The music arrangements and everything like that is great, but the album is let down by the singing. I know that its the guy from Ensiferum who did all the work for the album, but the vocals are sometimes difficult to hear and can sometimes spoil the song.

So - great music, not so great vocals.

I found out that my Ensiferum album won't be here for another two weeks or so which is annoying because they're one of my favourite bands at the moment.

sensitiveorgan00 01-06-2005 04:05 PM

^ Awesome, I love that album. Iced Earth's best work.

Did you get the original or the re-mastered version?

Steerpike 01-07-2005 02:00 PM

I just started listening to Freedom Call. Very cool. This is the kind of stuff I'd listen to on road trips.

It's a **** shame that I still don't have money to actually buy the albums.

Iron Man 01-07-2005 07:56 PM

Has anyone here heard Falconer? Just wondering what you guys think, my friend made a copy for me and I don't think it's half bad.

I heard a few songs. They were, meh, alright. I found them pretty boring though, but I guess I'll have to give it a better listen.

Oh, I got Jag Panzer - Thane to the Throne a few days ago, pretty good so far. I don't think I listened to all of it yet.

Superfly 01-07-2005 11:16 PM

In MY opinion i'd say Rhapsody. Though Evergrey are a very very good band.

Oh, and today I got Kotipelto - Coldness. This cd is so good. I recomend it to anyone who liked Stratovarius.

Also i'd like to say that guy from Children of Bodom did a very very awsome job on the keyboards ;)

Superfly 01-08-2005 12:35 AM

I've never heard evergrey, anybody got any songs to recommend?
