Gwar is insane. listen to 'em

AnesthesiaBassist 08-05-2004 11:54 PM

very good

can i ask what type of metal is testament?

ConquerorWorm 08-06-2004 02:07 AM

Few things...

Gwar is an insane band who you should definatly hear but you don't get the full impact of them 'til you see 'em in concert.

And I was just wondering why you didn't mention that alot of Swedish death metal is melodic death. Ex. Arch Enemy, Hypocracy, etc..

Last, how can you forget Cannibal Corpse in death metal!?! To me, they are the definitive death metal band.

Oh, and as far as Lamb of God, I have a hard time deciding what genre they fit into as well. They have so many different styles to them it's impossible to categorize that band.

gregnirvana 08-06-2004 05:56 AM

husher metal. i think it grew from the seatle sence with bands like : sound garden (they aint no grunge, its more doom metal with normal rock n' roll and punk over tones)

Bartender 08-06-2004 06:48 AM

^Don't just invent genres for every band that sounds slightly different. Just call them hard rock.

Testament are thrash.

mxdude52 08-06-2004 02:48 PM

sorry if this was already posted, but does anyone know of any black/death metal bands that ARENT satanist/anti-christian?

Per Ardua Ad Astra 08-06-2004 03:10 PM

There are plenty of 'white metal' bands (Christian Black metal), for example Vardoger is christian.

By the way, 'white metal' is a fucking joke.

Black Death 08-07-2004 09:24 AM

Which genere did Symphony X belong to?
(Casual guess: Progressive)

Bartender 08-07-2004 10:12 AM

some of the other bands on there are questionable, i never knew symphony x is heavy metal, they dont have anything in common with the other bands listed, you might as well put them in the power/progressive area
Symphony X is definitely progressive metal.
:).
are you saying that it sucks, or that there is no type of metal that is 'white metal'?
The overall point of white metal is stupid, it goes against everything black metal was created for but yet they still try to create the same type of music.
The original black metallers were pagan, and they were anti-christian because the christians basically took over the pagan beliefs in Scandinavia.
Now for white metal to be able to say that they play black metal, and sing about Christianity is the biggest contradiction i've ever heard.

Ahem... rap metal. Anybody ever mention that? :smash:
Ahem... rap metal. Anybody ever mention that? :smash:
The name sort of explains itself, a fusion of rap and metal, groups like Rage Against the Machine define the genre.

I've really been struggling with trying to find the right metal bands for me. I absolutely adore Megadeth, and hope to expand into black/death metal. I'm looking towards complex music overall, but it doesn't have to be mind-boggling to be good. I know asking for suggestions is asking quite a bit, considering you don't know who I am, but the twist to make things even more difficult is I don't have a music download system to try out each band.

My top 5 favourite bands/artists-Pink Floyd, Tool, Megadeth, Mike Patton, Led Zeppelin. I grew up on classic rock, listen to my dad's albums, and I once loved Metallica (old stuff), but couldn't care less now if they didn't exist.

Here are the albums I'm interested in getting...

COB-Follow The Reaper
Symphony X-V
Spastic Ink-Ink Complete (I don't know how I'll get ahold of this one)
Cynic-Focus

I was impressed with the CD reviews on the more complex albums above. So don't get the idea that I'm just trying to get into technical metal. I'm not too fond of Dani Filth's screeching but I might get used to it. Also note that I play guitar, and love complex riffs, fills, ect, but it doesn't have to be flashy, or technical for the sake of being technical. If it has ood grooves, or solid music, with a great overal band. Please recommend it.

Bartender 08-08-2004 06:44 AM

Ink Complete and Focus are both available at www.lasercd.com. You might also want to check out Gordian Knot, who are a progressive rock/metal instrumental band (pretty much masterminded by Cynic's bassist).

Per Ardua Ad Astra 08-08-2004 12:44 PM

Cynic - Focus is when of the best technical albums i've ever heard, you should definitely go with that.
If you love Megadeth, try to check out Dragonlord, it's sort of thrash/death kind of stuff (the Guitarist of Testament's side project)

extreme_191 08-08-2004 07:31 PM

How's Dark Angel, Testament, ect?

Also I kinda like Progenies of the Great Apocalypse by DB. So should listen to Arcturus, or Emperor, cause they both were recommended to me?

Bartender 08-08-2004 07:43 PM

Dark Angel and Testament are both top-class thrash bands, which are a different kind of metal altogether to the others you've listed (except, at some times, Megadeth). If you want really complex/technical thrash, I think Coroner are your best bet. You could ask in the Titans of Thrash thread, if you like (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149488).

Emperor and Arcturus both are (or at least have been at some point) symphonic black metal, which is the same genre as DB. They've also both done it well, from what I've heard, which for me puts them a point above Borgir. They're not technical or complex in the same way as Cynic or Spastic Ink (thanks for reading those reviews, by the way), but they're also nowhere near simple - Arcturus in particular are very much a "thinking man's band", very avant-garde. For more Arcturus info, you can check out Per Ardua's Featured Artist on them (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182163).

Atreyu.........which genre do they belong to.

Someone told me that they are emo and im like all confused, cuz i thougth that emo was like Simple plan/Good charlotte and stuff.

RivFader 08-09-2004 04:00 AM

where can we put Ozzy Osbourne while he was with Randy Rhodes?is it hair metal or something?

RivFader 08-09-2004 04:28 AM

i think that Symphony X is also considered progressive symphonic metal

Drumma 08-09-2004 05:56 AM

Love Metal

I'm pretty sure Atreyu are metalcore, so that's why they don't sound like emo.

Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are both pop punk, so even if Atreyu did sound like them they wouldn't be emo.

If your going to get an Arcturus album get 'Aspera Hiems Symfonia' it's the only Full length they released that is symphonic black metal, if you like Progenies of the Great Apocalypse you would probably like Arcturus and Emperor, though Arcturus and Emperor are both vastly different than Dimmu Borgir, so be ready for an upgrade.
By the way, do what you can to avoid Cradle of Filth.

Thanks, I wasn't trying to imply the idea of listening to them. I was pointing out that I'm not fond of the shreeking style scream that Dani does. Also what Emperor album should I check out?

Per Ardua Ad Astra 08-09-2004 07:08 PM

'In the Nightside Eclipse' and 'Anthems to the Welkin at dusk' are both classic symphonic black metal albums. If you want sort of an overview of Emperor throughout the years you may want to check out 'Emperial Live Ceremony.'
