Did you hear all the troubles I had recording that track? :p

First, I learned it, then, that day I recorded it good, but I used too much flange. Then I tried recording again, but I got interrupted by my mom. Tried again, got interrupted by my dad. Then, the next day I recorded it almost flawlessly, but I forgot to save it. (lol) I was wicked pissed by that point, so I decided, w/e I'm just gonna record this one more time, and if it's not good, I give up.

Luckily, I got it well enough. :p There is one section that is a bit muddy due to the flange, but it should be fine once there are drums/bass/vox.

ill jam to it today ...im thinking about doing a multi track with a djembe...would that be cool??

Oh, and also, do you have any ideas for the electronic drum intro? I beleive that Ben has been working with Fruity Loops trying to figure something out. I also toyed with it for about 5 minutes 2 nights ago, but I gave up, due to my lack of skill in the area of Fruity Loops. :p

i had an idea to day also....im gonna take roto toms and tune them to D,A,D and play all the open chords adam plays on drums :p ..(not for the recording ...just for fun) :)

The hardest thing about playing almost anything Tool on drums (especially the solos) is learning how to count the entire song, because of the odd signatures. I've never tried that one, so I wouldn't know how to count it. I could make a good guess that it's harder to count the solo then the song because it changed from the rest of the song (except the build-up of course).

Not only the counting and not losing place, but the technicality of the playing is also a factor, but that is a little easier to do with practice. Where as something like timing and counting correctly in odd signatures is something you have to learn independantly. Just trying to play a song where it is required without previous practice with it will almost always result in failure.

nothing really hard, but for 2 years its very impressive, also pulling it off perfectly is a deal in its own, cause i believe its time signature fluxuation is 7,7,7,8,7,7,7,8 getting that down in itself can be tricky....matter can emulate it the best i have heard....its actually perfect i think. :)

yes becasue with the solo there is no way you can find your place by listening to the guitar, its all done off of the timming in your head

Isn't the solo in a polyrythmic time signature? That's what I thought it was on first listen...

Also, keeping time is a big factor in all of Tool's songs that are in wierd time sigs. The Grudge is the hardest that I've stumbled upon. It's in 5/8 time, and that makes the verse very hard to play. (The palmuted open D section) Overall, that is a tough song for any of the members. As far as toughness across the board, I'm sure The Grudge takes the cake. Sure, Ticks & Leeches is a godly song as far as the drumming goes, but the bass and guitar parts aren't hard at all.

EDIT: so it's a 29/8 to 7/8 polyrythm?!?!

After you learn Ticks and Leeches you're like, "Man, that wasn't that hard, but I'm really sweaty."

It just takes some stamina, or I'm very out of shape.

Yeah, that just takes some practice.

The hardest part for me is the post interlude section (I improvise it every time) and the second verse. The accents throw me off sometimes.

Meh, I'm not too worried about quality. I think that it would turn out very well though. That song is so fun to play. :D I beleive I said this once before in here, but one night before I went to bed, I played Ticks& Leeches and Lateralus in one set. It was amazing. :amaze: It was one of the most uplifting experience I've ever had.

Yeah, I remember the first time I nailed (mostly) Ticks and Leeches. I was doing the double bass at the end before the last fill, and my sister's boyfriend jumps in and I didn't notice him but at the end he goes, "HOOOOLY **** THAT WAS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!"

Bad in a good way. He listens to rap so it was kinda funny for me.

I think I might learn Third Eye. That song is awesome. It seems like most Tool fans I talk to are discouraged by the length of the song. Sure, it may have a total running time of 13:47, but in reality, when you take out the ambience and the Bill Hicks/Tim Leary spiel at the beggining, it's really not much longer than Lateralus. :D

EDIT: It's still a freaking beast of a track.

People who arent for its length can just shut up because i feel that its perfectly timed and it gets the point across to the listeners. I still geet a rush every time i listen to it.

I was listening to lataralus and I came up with a riff some what simialr to the laterlaus chrous for teh bass. grt!

Now onto my point: Dudes at schools say bassist who play with pikcs instead of their fingers are mediocre and I constanly argue with them about those that.

What are yalls opions on? Is picking pathetic or something?

I just joined this forum, and this is an awesome thread man. I'd just like to say I love tool, I am hopefully going to work on a lot of their songs, I know schism so far on drums, great song, really gave me some wonderful concepts to move around the drums such as the triplets on the hi hat in the verses and intro. I love it. I hope to learn the patient, and/or lateralus by the end of summer, and clean up schism a little too.

Wow, I am glad their are a lot of drummers here, awesome stuff. I agree with you on this one. Some of the tom/bass drum work he does is phenomenal, its unbelievable.

im still trying to figure out what hes doing for the intro of third eye, when i look at it on video it looks like hes doing triplets on the toms but im still not sure
