And it's probably the only time, ever, in the universe, I've liked U2.

China Mieville - The City and the City

funkyhoney 09-30-2009 09:13 AM

Is this a recommendation? What's it about?

gaslight 09-30-2009 09:13 AM

That's a sick book but the Bas Lag series was my favourite by far.

Until someone shows up after you close, then complains.
What will the excuse be?
"Well, like, no one was around."

FunkMetalBass 09-30-2009 10:34 AM

I found a neck! Bought a Squier P-Bass at the pawn shop last night for $90. It feels better than my Jazz neck and will feel much better once I sand it down and get a satin finisd on there.

gaslight 09-30-2009 10:42 AM

Sweet as man.

I've been toying with the idea of having my SRX500 re-necked but I'm not sure what the practical considerations are.

I just wanted a maple fretboard. Both necks will need to be cleaned, coated in a poly, and I'm sure a fret crown wouldn't hurt.

The Scar is probably my favorite of his novels, but The City and the City I think is the most "mature" of his works. It's really well realized and written. The whole thing read like a 50's detective movie and that was awesome.

whitesquares 09-30-2009 01:25 PM

Books are lame. Harry Potter series are the only books worth reading.
Like Philip K. Dick, he's more a writer of ideas.

Having said that, the ideas are ****ing sick.
That's not true. Have you read Voices From the Street?

Win-sauce.

Phillip Pullman's His Dark Material Trilogy was way cooler than Harry Potter.

Definitely agree on that one.

No, Harry Potter books are still the only books worth reading. Fact.

The last one was epic as hell. I almost cried at the end because the awesomeness had ended.

The thing with Harry Potter is because it's written for children/early teens it's ideas are so easy to grasp, but still quite original, (unless you believe in the Tolkien rip off theory) that almost anyone can read the books and enjoy them.

whitesquares 09-30-2009 06:09 PM

^ Yeah that's why they're the only books worth reading.

why are you people saying Tolkien is a good writer

have you ever read lord of the rings...its ****ing awful

Spaceman Spiff 09-30-2009 07:49 PM

I haven't read Lord of the Rings, but I've read The Hobbit, which I liked a lot.

I'm not really a reader of fantasy.

the hobbit was a good book though imo, but the LotR series as well as the silmarillion were ****
ITT: compulsive over-exaggeration.
I dunno dude, that series was one of the worst I've ever read. And I've read a decent amount of books if I do say so myself.

Spaceman Spiff 09-30-2009 09:39 PM

Why read the whole thing if you hate it so much?

If I'm ever reading a book that I don't like I just don't finish it.

And we're talking about three books.

Yeah, I loved the whole detective vibe of the story, and the way it reads in the first person with a feeling that English isn't the narrator's first language (or maybe it was just sloppy editing :p). But man, the epic fiction going on in that trilogy just rips so many authors to shreds. All very enjoyable and I recommend every one of them.

Mr. Pickle 09-30-2009 11:06 PM

Anyone know any good fiction novels based around Greek mythology?
