I'll be honest, the concept of 'symphonic/atmospheric death metal' seemed like a pretty cool idea to me before checking this album out. After hearing this album though, I think it would be fair to say that describing this as underwhelming would be a gross understatement. Communion is basically a circus of half-cooked ideas thrown together into an incoherent mess of an album that succeeds at nothing but causing frustration to the listener.

The main problem with Communion is that in its quest for exploring new ideas and musical thresholds, it tries too hard to be something it isn't: atmospheric. To a fan of bands like Dimmu Borgir and Moonspell, this might create some sort of false 'atmosphere' but it fails to evoke any sort of emotion or sensation in me. When I listen to music that's supposed to be atmospheric, I want to be engulfed into the experience, but it the music here seems to be doing everything in its power to push the listener out of any sort of atmosphere with its ridiculous simplicity and tedium. Production values are also important in atmospheric metal, and Communion also fails in that department. Everything here is right up in the front, polished and mechanical sounding as hell without any sensibility for subtlety. The production (guitar tone and everything) actually really reminds me of Dimmu Borgir's recent work, and I mean that in the worst way possible. The symphonic arrangements, as per usual in metal, are average at best and the riffing for the most part consists of muted 'chuggas', cheesy power chord progressions that echo radio pop-rock, and simple (though admittedly competent) melodies. The songs are structured well, which definitely shows that Septicflesh is competent when it comes to placing pieces together, but it seems like they lack the ability to create pieces worth putting into the puzzle.

There isn't really much else to say about this. It's boring, tedious, simple in its presentation, overproduced, and most of all: NOT ATMOSPHERIC. If you enjoy bands like Moonspell, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, etc., you will undoubtedly enjoy this but to those with decent taste who may be curious about this, stay away.
