EMGs rawk. I have them on my bass.
|
That's why almost no metal guitarists use Strats. I use an ESP myself, and I love the active EMGs. They're totally suited for any type of music.
I don't like active pickups so much myself, because I feel it's harder to get a good clean tone out of them, and I actually prefer the distortion of non-actives. I use a DiMarzio Tone Zone in my bridge position which is the best pickup for distortion that I've ever used. I just bought a Parker Nitefly M. This thing is so amazing. :D |

EMGs for bass give me such a beautiful clean sound. Of course, I never use distortion anyway.

The added gain is what bothers me, even with distortion. But I can get really thick tones without the actives with the DiMarzio and the mahogany wood of the guitar, with the right amp settings. Right now I'm saving up to buy a Mesa/Boogie Single Recto as an upgrade to my current solidstate. |

There's no doubt EMGs are good, but we're talking active versus passive. That's where it comes down to personal preference, really. |

If you want really great distortion without having to spend for that Mesa, get a Line6. Honestly, those amps are my favourite ever. I played through a Spider II stack in one of my shows, and it sounded so good.. totally solid amps, contrary to popular belief. |

Well, I'm talking bass pickups, and that's an entirely different ball game. Plus, EMGs look cool. |

Oh man, do I (heart) a good set of active EMGs on my guitar. The cleans aren't bad and the distorted tone is the best for metal.

The one he has can get so many different tones, some good some bad, but it is a really good amp. Best solidstate I've heard. Still, I played on a Single Recto of my guitar instructor's and was blown away by the sounds. I couldn't believe that what I was hearing was actually coming from my hands and not that of a professional guitarist. I'm willing to spend the money, especially to completement my Parker. :) |
I really need a new amp. I only have a 30 watt bass amp right now.
|
My friend plays a Line6 Spyder II. It's not bad, but in terms of solid states, I'll take my Crate over his amp any day.

What Crate do you have? |
Speaking of amps and the such, does Mike used a scooped sound? I can never really tell with that sort of thing.

Well, funny story, another band playing the night I used the Line6 was playing a Crate stack.. not even kidding, the amp blew out about 20 seconds into the set. He had to switch to the Line6, mid-song. Not saying anything about Crate amps, it's just a coincidence. My experience is that Crates don't sound very good for distortion, though. |

No, he's all about the midrange. He uses a tiny amount of gain, too. It's a really unique distorted guitar tone actually. |
That's good. I never liked using a scooped sound.
Although, on Lamentations, I think it was at the end of Master's Apprentices, Mikeal hits two chords and they sounded scooped to my ears. Again, I'm not knowledgable in the realm of guitar tones. |

He wouldn't switch rhythm guitar tones during a song, its just not practical. Listen to Metallica's And Justice For All for the epitome of all scooped guitar tones, then listen to Ghost Reveries, and you'll see the difference. |
Any idea of what his EQ settings are?
|
Any idea of what his EQ settings are?
If I'm playing Opeth I'll dial in generally 4 Bass, 7 Mid, 8 High. Gain at about 9 o'clock. That's just me though- I know his Laney amps are very distinctive sounding at high volume levels, so it's hard to duplicate. |
What Crate do you have?
GT3500 The power is insane. My friend's Line6 couldn't keep up at all. The sound is surprisingly clear for a solid state. I agree that Crates aren't the best for distortion, but i like mine. |
It's a pretty simple song...I don't think it'd be too hard to play on bass.
Learn Advent, Nectar, and To Bid You Farewell. Those are fun songs to play on bass. |
Hey, while you're at it, through a fricken' piano at me  ...
Maybe I will... /throws piano at ICB :p
I want to be able to do the stuff I can on guitar and then play it on keyboards...that would be awesome (I'm such a CoB-head)...but I really want to learn how to play piano so I could do some dark, melodic intros and shit...plus I'd bust out some Opeth at school in the band room  I'm getting the band director here into Opeth.
heh, nice. I'd love to be able to play some CoB on the keyboards, Janne Warmen does some awesome stuff. /NP Kissing the Shadows...I can't wait to hear this one on November 11th
Can you link me? I've searched for those pages, but all my searches found was dead links. I could probably find them if I tried hard enough, but I like the easy way. Link please! Mendez is good, but I think the bass on Morningrise just stands out way more than on any other album. I really dig the old bass player. Anyone know what type of gear that guy/Mendez uses? I think Mendez uses a Fender P, which is what I've got, but I don't know what kind of amps. |
Mendez uses a Fender Jazz. Sometimes on the softer songs he uses a Marcus Miller Sig Jazz. As for amps, he uses Laney like the guitarists.

I just bought a Parker Nitefly M. This thing is so amazing. :D
:amaze: :amaze: :amaze: Those guitars are some of the sexiest guitars I've ever seen. I'm not familiar with the different kinds of models but please don't tell me yours has a pickguard--its ruins the look! |

I'm psyched. I hope I can sleep all right. |

It's alot more groove orientated, and the man is solid as ****. I assume he plays/has played alot of jazz and funk, and it really helps. Maybe this is just me-the-drummer speaking, but IMO it's alot more important that the rhythm section is locked in and tight than that the musicians are able to play really complex things...sure, their parts may sound better and be more fun to play alone, but they simply don't sound as good together. |
