^^ I like the avatar, did you make it yourself in paint?

slowhand 09-22-2004 12:10 PM

Ahem...

Guys, I want to buy the Blusebreaker CD (the Beano one). Is it as good as everyone says it is?

Also, I'm interested in Velvet Underground and Rush, but don't know where to start. Help, please. And can anyone tell me what they sound like?

Paranoidd 09-22-2004 12:17 PM

*ahem*

Good choise on VU and Rush. Two of my all time favorite bands.

Pretty much anything of VU is good. Lou Reed (of VU) has had a 30 year career after VU, but most people think his stuff with the band is the best. Jeez man, I really like all their tracks, but stuff like Heroin, Venus in Furs, Candy Says, Jesus, etc, etc is just essential. The only album you may want to avoid (unless you're really into pysch and poetry) is White Light/White Heat. I have them all, personally, but it's an aquired taste.

As for Rush, go with anything that didn't come after signals. A farewell to kings is my favorite album of theirs, but 2112, Caress of Steel, Moving Pictures, pretty much everything is excellent.

slowhand 09-22-2004 12:22 PM

Thanks.

From VU, is "Velvet Underground and Nico" good?

Paranoidd 09-22-2004 12:26 PM

Yup. Probably their most criticially acclaimed album.

The only thing that you may not like is Nico's voice, she's got a weird one, but she doesn't sing on every song so you should be OK.

slowhand 09-22-2004 12:32 PM

But what is their scene? I mean, are they blues rock, prog rock, what?

Paranoidd 09-22-2004 12:34 PM

Psychedelic. They did loooots of drugs.

Lou Reed is the master of making a simple song sound good. They're just simple songwriters, but some stuff (like venus in furs) has alot more elements to it.

slowhand 09-22-2004 12:43 PM

Well then, I think I might check out "Velvet Underground and Nico" and see what's all the fuss about.

The track "heroin" is legendary. It's part of the unwritten junkie code that you never, ever play that song while getting high.

Heroin

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
I have made the big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death
And you can't help me now, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
'Cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
Then thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess I just don't know
And I guess I just don't know

slowhand 09-22-2004 12:55 PM

I can read why someone wouldn't want to hear that song while doing drugs... It would freak them out.

And then there's Rush. Maybe I'll look for "A farewell to kings."

thickasabrick 09-22-2004 01:20 PM

i just listened to heroin...i enjoyed it (thank god im not on drugs or that would probably freak me out) you seem knowledgable, can you recommend more velvet underground songs that you think would do the band justice? i never knew nico sang with velvet revolvet. i read about her a bunch in my jim morrison biography. she didnt sound very talented at music.

edit- oh god i did say velvet revolver (i still spelt it wrong though)
i never knew nico sang with velvet revolvet. i read about her a bunch in my jim morrison biography. she didnt sound very talented at music.
you mean velvet underground dont you

Paranoidd 09-22-2004 01:30 PM

Haha, you said Velvet Revolver

I do it sometimes too.

Andy Worhol really, really liked Nico (but he was also a nutbar) and insisted that VU let her perform with them. The band wasn't even too crazy about her at first. She had a weird voice. Andy Worhol gave them their break (they were like his "official" band) so they owed him the favor.

Other songs I really like by them

Venus in Furs
Candy Says
Sunday Morning
Waiting for the man
What goes on
Pale Blue Eyes
Jesus
Beginning to See the light
Sweet Jane

Some of my favorites...

You may also like some of Lou Reed's solo work. He put out a CD recently called "animal serenade," it's a live album and it's real good. He does a few VU tracks on it, as well as his own material (of which he has quite a bit).

One of the best simple songwriters ever, IMHO.

lunch998 09-22-2004 02:28 PM
They did plenty of original stuff. And what they took from others, they actually improved with additions of their own.

But yeah, sheesh, make your own music. All of it!
Yea I know, I meant it as a joke.
