you're going to gig 4 basses?
god. everyone else in soundcheck is gonna hate you fast. i'm gonna go play in this wondrous snowfall! wheeeeeee
I normally gig 2 basses without my effects chain and I do 99% of my sound-checking at home pre-gig. The sound guys around here only shift levels up and down, so, theoretically, if I can balance my levels really well outside of the gig, I only need to have the soundguy adjust one bass and the others will fall in line. I'd like to start using a 3rd bass live, because the Stingray + Pick + Stainless Steel strings just has the sexiest tone that I love to use for 3 of our songs. Unforunately my A/B pedal only gives me the ability to use two. It's great for my differently tuned basses (Standard, Half-Step Down). |
I gig with 1 bass, with my Ibanez around only as backup, in the unlikely case I need it.
|
Do you gig the Stambaugh?
|
Do you gig the Stambaugh?
Obviously. It's my best feeling, sounding, and looking bass. Of course I gig it. :) I don't play any of my other basses, honestly. The only reason I keep my Ibanez is purely so that I have a backup bass. |
'allo.

Everyone should have a back up instrument, no matter what. It could save a gig one day. |

hai Long time no speak. Back in Frenchtown? |

I have a couple basses that I purely use for practice or because I like how they sound recorded (my Fretless Jazz, for instance), but that I would probably never use live. |

I figured your question was aimed more at the value of the bass than anything. |

Long time no speak. Back in Frenchtown?
Da, da. Courses are looking good, readin sexy Roman sources. Wass new? |
I figured your question was aimed more at the value of the bass than anything.
Value of the bass is pretty moot. I'd play out a $50,000 bass or a $50 bass as long as it played well and fit the role that I needed it to. |
Da, da.

I will never take a winter course again. One semester condensed into 3 weeks is not only brutal, it's Religious Studies of American Religions, which is completely uninteresting. Why did I pay $1400 to take this?!?!?! hsihhggsk gzsb cdk fbdxk fbgkdgjhdxbgjhxdgkjfhdgxrdhxdghxdf!!!! f**k
neat.
did you have a fine christmas?
Yeah, it wasn't too bad. Spent most of the last month taking care of my mom, who came down with H1N1. It was good, though. Good eatings and whatnot. |

I've had this bass for almost 2 years now, and I can't imagine using any other instrument. |

you been vaccinated?
Negative. Not one for syringes, and think the whole thing is overblown. I'll deal with it if I get it. |

i got it. it was free and convenient. getting it would be inconvenient. what exciting foods did you have? |
Our shirts are simple and sexy.
The guy did a great job on them. |
I took off work today so I can go see this band live. Should be sweet. They ripped it up last time.

Funniest. Thing. I've. Seen. In. Ages.
Cheers, man. |
holy ****, i haven't laughed that hard at something in a LONG time.
thanks for that. |
It was funnier in the YL,YL thread. The bass forum seems to make things less funny.

I feel like I'm asking the unthinkable here, but: are there any amps that I could use for BOTH guitar and bass and have success for both?
|
Omar from TMV uses a bass amp live...That's about all the knowledge I have on that subject.
You'd probably just need a different cabinet if you found a head that you liked for both. |
I've been looking at smaller amps, like that Orange Tiny Terror and the Vox something I can't remember. And I thought, hmm... it's small, it's gonna be burning away, hmm.

You'll have more success running a guitar through a bass amp than vice versa. So I'd suggest looking into a tube-driven bass head. Probably paired with some 10" drivers. |
Only two more tracks left to record and then we just have vocals next week.
w00tness. I've got my stereo compressor set up for my stage/recording rig. I use the left side to compress the signal once (lightly) through my effects loop and then I use the right side after the DI out. This way the sound guy can stop turning me down when I clip for all of 0.04 seconds and keeping me completely out of the mix on stage. Now I just have to work on my pedal board. Gah. |

My buddy has an amp that's meant for a keyboard I believe it was a peavey something or other. It had like 4 inputs and we would have bass and guitar going at the same time and it'd sound fine since, ya know, keyboard has more range than both combined food for thought? |
Any head is fine. They might not all SOUND good, but they'll work. It's the cab you want to worry about. Use guitar through a bass cab, and you'll probably be fine, but use bass through a guitar cab, and the drivers can't cope with the low frequency. So use a bass cab.
|
So go for like [if I use Orange as an example] a Tiny Terror head but with a SP210 it's work?
|
Omar from TMV uses a bass amp live...That's about all the knowledge I have on that subject.

I know someone who's used the Tiny Terror as a recording head for both bass and guitar. Don't know what cab he ran with it though. Have you also seen the new Bass Terror? I don't know how it handles guitar, but it might be alright. Also, I'd make sure to test the setup with a guitar first to make sure you like the sound. Bass cabs aren't always that great on the distortion front, but in theory the SP210 should work. Make sure you don't get one with a tweeter, or at least with a defeatable one.
|
Thanks for all the advice dudes. I'm not a guitarist or bassist really, but my space is where our recording space will be so I figure it'd be good to have a permament rig here; might tempt me to play a lot more. Can't really justify two though. :D
|
The keyboard amp suggestion is a good one.
|
Ya it's one I'm considering closely. If I'm micing cabs for recording, is there going to be a huge difference in quality [considering I'll be running in-box EQ and effects] between valvestate and valve amps?
|
Depends on your taste. I've heard valve amps I hate, and solid state amps I love. But overall, nothing beats full on valve grind for me. Especially for guitar. Try a few out and see what you think.
