Less i think, this thread has really rocketed along recently. Look at Gur's postcount, and he only came in here while you were gone

bobbass4k 10-16-2004 12:47 PM

i left yesterday, and were nearly at 300 pages

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 12:48 PM
if you play with a pick, you can't pop/slap
if you pop/slap you cant play with a pick.

its another style - if you refuse to play with a pick then you are limiting yourself on bass, everyones happy to learn how to tap or slap, or double thump, but they still cant do the most basic of skills - pick well.

Untitled 10-16-2004 12:51 PM

Im good with a pick

Criag, its not the same effects, the one you shown me was the Boss ME50, the one i played was the BossME50B, i duno the difference, but the B version is only a 10er more.

Twat_Out_Of_Hell 10-16-2004 12:52 PM

Pick>finger

in general :)

Untitled 10-16-2004 12:55 PM

OH OH OH, i figured out the differene, B means bass.

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 12:57 PM

fingers are more versatile, by far,

however i can see the advantges and disadvantages to both - its just most people feel a need to dis-associate themselves with anything to do with punk rock, and so they refuse to play with a pick and just insult pick players instead.

in otherwords my bass playing:

40% Fingerstyle
30% Pick
30% Slap/Tap Styles

Very true. You are a wise man indeed :smoke: :)

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 01:01 PM

and also i like a pick because on stage im a right little punk rock bassist.

but anyways....

Untitled 10-16-2004 01:03 PM

As interesting as it is, i think that playing with a Pick looks more interesting and fun, if you can use your full sholder, (not for root notes) then it looks like your having fun i think.

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 01:06 PM

i just wear my bass slightly lower with a pick, so my arm is completely straight : looks like im more involved in the music, i am more involved with the music

... and also i just like the whole way that you can move on stage with punkrock without looking like a complete twat, you can usually allways move around, turn around, jump a fair bit, and move your head and things, without having to make to much of an effort.

although i cant stand just playin straight root notes, i allways have to double it up and put skips and muted notes in it, or write a more complex bassline

How low i were mine.

(prob gonna have to copy the link)

Edit, it does work, my thumb looks freaky holding that pick too.

(i love posting myself now)

(same pics as yestoday, and proberly gonna be same for ages)

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 01:18 PM

thats maybe a little too low for my lkiking - can you play it?

i have it low, but with the neck pointing quite high (like flea used to wear it) when im using a pick

Untitled 10-16-2004 01:20 PM

yeah, if you look on that my arms bent and im hitting the E or A, i can reach all the frets fine, i have no problems with it like that.

bobbass4k 10-16-2004 01:24 PM

I dont really play with a pick, but thats coz i just cant, im clumsy with a pick, i get more control using my fingers

apacherosepeacock 10-16-2004 01:26 PM

ahhhh right, i should try other positions, im getting to used to picking at a slightly strange angle - isnt allways good when you move because the bass tends to slip - especially on stage.

its too high the way i use for fingerstyle to use a pick, and then on my 5-string i cant get to the low string if its low, not that i ever use it

Untitled 10-16-2004 01:33 PM

I pull the neck realy high up, and play over the 17th fret, if youve ever seen billie joe play its kinda like that but on bass, when i need to use bottem frets i just move my picking hand down, slaps palright to play on it too, and finger stlye.

Ha ha, i played slap with a phaser on today, i poped the string, snd it sounded so wierd, kinda like a gun, it **** my friends up.

GurS 10-16-2004 02:26 PM

people who play with picks are just being lazy. no question. there is no advantage whatsoever with playing with a pick... anything you can do with a pick you can do with fingers, and much more besides.

Go on, ask me smoething you can do with a pick. i;ll tell you how to do it with fingers.

That is ignorance there's nothing wrong with a plectrum you can gain from using one.

GurS 10-16-2004 02:35 PM

there's nothing 'wrong' with it, it's just that it is not only a pointless extra, but also limits what you can do at speed.

InMyPlace 10-16-2004 02:45 PM

That's just opinion though, ever heard Rancid's - Maxwell Murders? the solo is played with a Plectum and thats super fast.

GurS 10-16-2004 03:52 PM

it limits you in other ways.... particularly when speed involves, say, going from a note on the E when to the G, or when a piece requires super fast playing that immediatly moves in to popping/slapping and then back into speed... you can go just as fast with fingers as with a pic. ever seen the video to run to the hills? it's the video that all bassits aspire to - steve harris fingers actually BLUR

Untitled 10-16-2004 03:53 PM

going from e to g is easy, just mute a and d, and strum down, that works.

GurS 10-16-2004 03:58 PM

not if you're going 2-9 from e to g

Untitled 10-16-2004 04:00 PM

thats where sweap picking comes into it.

GurS 10-16-2004 04:02 PM

and how do you get past the pop/slapping scenario?

Untitled 10-16-2004 04:04 PM

i only read the first 2 lines of your post.

GurS 10-16-2004 04:06 PM

well, please answer the rest of it :p

Untitled 10-16-2004 04:07 PM

i cant be arsed :(

GurS 10-16-2004 04:08 PM
