Was it indeed?

I love that song, especially the LATB version.

Yeah, but it stopped a few hours before the show.

NP: Trial of Tears

Lord Abortion 04-04-2006 05:58 PM

What DT song would sound least bad without keyboards?

eighty d 04-04-2006 06:01 PM

The Silent Man is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Great song to do solo on acoustic guitar.

LifeofMusic 04-04-2006 07:44 PM

So i was just thinking back and watching Petrucci's Rock Discipline and thinking how much cooler he was back then. I was looking on the DiMarzio website and the picture of him on the first page..... I was wondering if any of you shared this feeling.

Holy crap, he got buff in a pretty quick amount of time. Maybe he wants to show off for the newest DVD?

ever eeking always rupert 04-05-2006 02:19 AM

I'm waiting for 4 DT albums to come in the mail. The anticipation is killing me

Captain Quentin 04-05-2006 03:58 AM

what albums?

ever eeking always rupert 04-05-2006 04:25 AM

Images & Words, Octavarium, SFAM and Awake.

JamJar 04-05-2006 04:28 AM

Their 3 best albums + Octavarium. Not bad.

Jev 04-05-2006 05:38 AM

Like 'em?
Like 'em?
Still waiting for 'em to arrive. What I've heard already from these albums is Home, The Spirit Carries On, Regression, Overture 1928, Octavarium (the song, not the entire album), Pull Me Under and Learning to Live.

Indeed, I do like them. If they are any indication of what the other songs on these albums are like, I do believe DT will become my favourite band.

Edit: Hey I haven't seen you around for a long, long time, Flower Dance. Hows it going?

Jev 04-05-2006 06:01 AM

Yup, they're a good indication to what the rest of those albums sound like.
Except maybe Octavarium. That album has a lot of different sounds.

I'm great thanks.

Clunge 04-05-2006 06:05 AM

Am I weird in that Octavarium is by far my favourite DT album?

Jev 04-05-2006 06:07 AM

Nope.
It was my favourite for a while.

kirk_wylde 04-05-2006 07:28 AM

Ok as this is the official DT thread hopefully someone here will be able to answer my question. On the live at Budokan DVD i have noticed that in the song "stream of conciousness" there appears to be an alternate drum fill, and consequently alternate footage. This occurs during the section where the instrument cut out and we are left with just the bass and Drums (just after petruccis solo. Now bear with me because this may have to describe this in detail in order to explain it.
Depending on the audio track i'm running (stereo or 5.1) or possibly depending where i click on the time line of the player (i use power Dvd, but i dont know if this makes a difference) the camera will focus sometimes on the keyboard players hands and then go to myung and then portnoy plays the studio drum fill whilst the camera is still focussing on myung. However other time the camera focuses on portnoy as the keys and guitar cut out (instead of jordan) then goes to myung as usual, but then instead of playing the studio fill the camera switches to portnoy who plays a completely different (and far more interesting) drum fill. I don't know why this has been done. and to me begs the question of how many overdubs have been used on the dvd and which bits they are actually playing live, but perhaps it was soley meant to be an easter egg.

If anyone else has noticed this I would love to hear your oppinion. and if not (and you own the budokan dvd) then please check out this confusing little glitch.

Jev 04-05-2006 07:30 AM

I've never noticed myself.
I'll give it a look tonight.

kirk_wylde 04-05-2006 07:35 AM

i only noticed it when i watched the song today and noticed that the drum fill had dissapeared. it may take you a while to find the two alternate versions (as its certainly taken me a while lol) but i guarantee you its there

scenesfromatheater 04-05-2006 12:57 PM

Octavarium is my least favourite DT album.

Yeah I saw this too. Probably just a normal overdub.

kirk_wylde 04-05-2006 01:53 PM

normal overdub? does it not seem strange that a band like DT should use overdubs, especially seeing as i seem to remember mike portnoy saying somewhere that he disliked overdubs. Plus surely overdubs are only used when theres mistakes and the non-studio drum fill was awesome.. having one or the other i wouldnt mind, but keeping the both just seems really odd, and pretty anoying when i'm waiting to hear one fill, and the other boring one comes in. a little consistency would be nice. but mind you the dvd as a whole is brilliant and they are still a great band. just watching how easy petrucci makes everything look just makes me want to give up guitar and hand my head in shame lol,

Lord Abortion 04-05-2006 03:35 PM

I really can't say I had a least favourite DT album...
probably WDADU

JamJar 04-05-2006 03:43 PM

I'm yet to hear WDADU. How doe it compare stylewise to later albums?

thunderzstruck 04-05-2006 03:59 PM

most bands use some kind of overdub for concert dvds and cds

it might just be a small fill or whatever, its really not a big deal at all

GenuineImitation 04-05-2006 04:07 PM
I'm yet to hear WDADU. How doe it compare stylewise to later albums?
I love the album, but it isn't LaBrie who is singing. Charlie Dominici (spelling?) is a really good singer though. I suggest getting it.

Lord Abortion 04-05-2006 04:09 PM

Yeah, it's not bad, but it just hasn't got that...James :p

Hahaha, JP is starting to look like James Hetfield

its annoying when the fills there one minute and gone the next, and to me that fill symbolises the excitement of watching a live dvd, if i wanted to hear the exact studio recording i'd listen to the cd. but i think i can let i go somehow :p i can always backtrack and find again if it really bothers me lol,

and to join in on the current conversation, i have heard some of the stuff off their first album, and i think it's worth a listen but only a shaddow of their other work

No band is perfect. Even Dream Theater messes up on a very rare occasion.

On on the SFAM 2000 dvd, there is a few overdubs including John Petrucci(I think) singing the wrong lyrics.

Lord Abortion 04-05-2006 04:58 PM

Vote Portnoy...right now!

JamJar 04-05-2006 05:17 PM

I will try and get WDADU soon.
