It kinda sucks how long it's taken to get my driving test done... here's the story all about how:

1. started driving late 2007 (I think) with an independant bloke who was dead busy, only got a lesson a week, sometimes not even that.

2. tried to take test summer 2008, didn't manage to get a test date.

-- intermission - went to uni----

3. tried to take test summer 2009, turns out the DSA were messing up people's test dates and double booking. Couldn't take test with original instructor, had to take the test in a different car. Misjudged width of car on test and went up a traffic island kerb.

-- intermission - went to uni again!----

4. Summer 2010 comes round, try to get in contact with second instructor, as I felt his car was easier to drive than original instructor's (albeit slightly different dimensionally which tripped me up on the test). Unable to get in contact, appears unable to use phone or organise himself. Ditch him for AA, third instructor, third car.

5. Original theory test lapses some time in late july. Can't take new theory test until the old one lapses, and can't book test for dates after my theory test expires. Window between starting driving again and theory test lapsing is too short, so had to take theory test again. Reduced amount of dates available to mid september.

6.Success! Finally....

So basically I've been able to drive at a passable standard for 2 years. Jus' time and red tape were holding me back.

And what sucks is that I'm probably not gonna be able to drive a car properly for atleast another year, insurance is way too high

AND they took my provisional license off me to exchange for a full one, but that'll take up to 3 weeks and I'll be back in uni by then.... no ID! piss....

Mine went something like this:

1. Early 2006 passed written test for learner's permit.

2. Parents taught me how to drive for about a year.

3. Permit expired before I took the driving test due to lack of motivation (didn't have a car).

4. Summer 2007 retook written test to get another permit.

5. 30 days later took driving test and passed.

Sometimes I wish it was as hard to get your license here as it is in other countries, we'd have less retards on the road.

Yeah, another reason why I'm glad I've passed it now rather than later - they're making the test harder next month.

What kinda stuff do you have to do in the US driving test? I've heard it's fairly simple, and everyone drives automatics....

It honestly couldn't be easier. I literally drove around the block then had to parallel park once (you get 3 tries but I got it on the first one). All they look at is your speed, how you check your mirrors, how closely you follow other vehicles and how you follow traffic signals basically. In the UK do you have to take it in a specific car or do you have the option to use your own?

You can use your own car but it's a bit tricky, you need to get it insured and have L plates and a couple of other bits of red tape I think. Also you don't get dual controls and I dunno if test centres insist on it.

Over here, the test consists of the theory, hazard perception, and practical tests - the theory is a multiple choice thing where you have to get at least 86% to pass. Hazard perception is where you have to watch some videos on a computer and click whenever a hazard crops up, depending how quick you 'catch' it will result in different scores.

The practical test is the serious bit really, you have to answer basic maintenance questions, pop the bonnet and point out various bits and bobs, and answer a couple of questions about testing various parts. Then when driving, you're always led round a few roundabouts, led to a quiet place to do 2 maneuvers (out of parallel park, 3/5 point turn and left reverse), which you have to nail first time. You have to pull up about 6 times, sometimes pretty much randomly, just to make sure ur doin it rite.

You get marked by how many minor, serious and dangerous faults you do. 1 serious or 1 dangerous fault fails the test instantly. You can have quite a few minors (not sure if it's 12 or 16 but it's around there). Sometimes if you keep doing dangerous faults the examiner kicks you out and you have to walk back home :P Minor faults can be for really, really petty things, and you're pretty much under scrutiny the whole time for these. But if you do 4 counts of most minor faults, that constitutes a serious fault and you fail.

they just made it harder here recently, need 20 hrs lessons at least to go for it, then theres a theory test then just a normal dirving around test

i got it about 2-3 years ago, handy enough

got a perfect test till the last roundabout going back to the test centre... but wasnt my fault, some yob was in the wrong roundabout lane and never indicated anywhere

What you have to do depends on which state you are in here. I didn't even have to take an actual driving test. I took driving school which consisted of watching videos and then taking written test. After you passed the written test you could get your permit. After getting said permit they had teachers take students out 2 at a time, hour driving each, until you got X number of hours driving with an instructor. Then you just waited until your requirement of having a permit for 3 months was up, and you took another test. If you passed... you got your license.


I missed three questions on that stupid test. Two of them asked me how much I would be fined if I got certain tickets and the third asked me to identify some sign which I hadn't seen prior and have never seen again.


P.S. - Definitely has to be a Josh post after this one, or he is slacking.

I passed my test with 14 minors; I think it's pretty much at the instructor's discretion.

3 minors for the same thing is bumped up to a major.

For me:

First test: 2 Majors 1 Minor

Second test: 1 major no minors

third test: no majors 14 minors

???

Same. But, tbh, with my car at the moment this is how I [I]have[/I] to drive when I'm in 5th or else it shunts it out of gear whenever you accelerate/decelerate.
