i don't think i've ever actually had duck meat. i like most dead animals, though, so i imagine it'd be pretty good.

Oooh. Charvels are nice basses. Pics or lies. How'd you get it for free?
Duck is soooo good.
AGREED |
Yay, my supplies will be here to start brewing my next beer [ale] later this week. I'm going to go with an Irish stout this time around, and a hefeweisen when the stout is done fermenting.
Oooh. Charvels are nice basses.
Pics or lies. How'd you get it for free?
I'll try and get some pics when I get back to uni and get to steal someone's camera but its cream in colour and it looks sexy. Got it from my gf's dad, he was telling me he got it back in the 80's, only played it for a week and it's spent the rest of its life in an attic. He said it was a 3/4 length but I think he's managed to somehow confuse a 34" scale or something because it ain't a 3/4 length. Anyway I played it and it needs some new strings and a tweaking of the truss rod because it clicks when I move the neck but other than that its in perfect condition. |
buckethead songs need more singing
|
also, i might start working on my guns XD
|
I'm ordering T-shirts for the band this weekend. 40 shirts (20 black, 20 white) for $165. Pretty good deal, methinks.
|
That would be an amazing deal in my currency.
Must be mate's rates right? Or single colour image or something. What does a band shirt sell for around your way? |
That would be an amazing deal in my currency.
Must be mate's rates right? Or single colour image or something. What does a band shirt sell for around your way?
Just a local guy that does it in his spare time with his wife. Single color (20 white shirts w/ black logo, 20 black shirts w/ white logo). Band shirts sell for ridiculous prices depending on the band. National bands - Tool, Incubus, Metallica - will sell shirts for $45 at concerts. Most local bands, though, keep it between $8 and $10. We're going to sell ours for $8 because we're aren't about the money. We've almost completely stopped working with "promoters" (aka, booking agents that print tickets and charge way too much) for this same reason. |
It certainly is liberating not to have to turn a profit.
If I got a shirt for $4 here I'd sell it for $10. Nice and even, noone has to break a note. |

If I got a shirt for $4 here I'd sell it for $10. Nice and even, noone has to break a note.
It's true, but if we do end up working with promoters and are forced to sell tickets for $8 just to break even, people will appreciate the $8 shirt cost. Not only that, it's still nearly 100% profit on every shirt. |
People here are so reluctant to part with money for a ticket. They think anything over $10 for four bands is an insult to their families honour.
It is really nice to be able to just do original bands for the love of it. You have to have that enjoyment in just the act of doing it. Even when I have CDs to sell, I love the feeling you get just giving it to someone who you bump into sometime. Seeing them happy and thankful, it's really fulfilling, not too sound gay or anything :p. I mean, what am I going to do with $5 anyway? But having a great positive interaction with someone, hell of a lot harder to come by than a fiver. |

Local music sucks so hard these days as-is. Tis true, but unfortunately, every band needs money to fund other publicity, gas for gigs (especially those 2-hour drives), and everything else in between. I don't plan on ever gaining any personal profit from it outside of potential gear repairs from actively playing. |
You need to find venues that don't charge you to play.
There are a couple places I know of around here like that that will let you charge whatever you want at the door and you keep it all and they keep everything made at the bar. My band pretty much does the Fugazi thing where we don't charge more than $5 for a show. The last show we played, rather than having people pay, we just gave out about 40 tickets. We could've made some decent money, but there are more important things. |
There's no venues in this town where you can play for free unless it's open mic night.
The very least you have to do is cover the sound guy. Unless you can find a venue without one, and we do have those but they aren't grand. |
^ I love your attitude.
I wish more people looked at music that way. I don't know about you guys, but the music scene here is completely fucked. Every band sucks, but every band thinks they're the greatest thing to happen to music. Shows are around $12-15 to see awful local bands in a church basement. No one has a good attitude about music anymore. It's not "let's write something original, cool, and fun for everyone," it's, "how can we make money/get girls/get famous?" So obnoxious. All the crappy bands get paid huge money to play shitty covers or even worse original at bars while any band that's talented has to break up soon after forming because no one wants to listen to them. Such a miserable catch 22. |
It's pretty much the same thing here. I've come across only about five bands in this city that I actually like, and I've seen more than I care to keep track of. They all just make such bland rock or crappy metal and write the same song over and over and over and over again.
Here are a couple of such crappy bands that I've unfortunately shared a stage with. http://www.myspace.com/theaffinityproject http://www.myspace.com/1867band Me, whether or not I make it big or get any recognition, I'm in it to make music I like. It's great if people like it, of course I want people to enjoy it and come out to shows and have a good time, but I'll keep doing it even if they don't. |
There are a few local clubs around here that just charge a door cover ($3-$5). They ask you what band you're there to see, and the cover charge goes directly to that band.
Venues realize that booking is easy and they're willing to charge a simple cover because they're banking on people drinking their alcohol. We've gotten lucky in that people enjoy our original music and really like our stage presence. On the business side of things, we strive to be very easy to work with. We show up on time, don't mind if we get pushed back a time slot, end our sets ON TIME, introduce other bands after our set is over, thank the club owners and promoters/booking agents. It's not what you know, it's who you know, and I know full-well that promoters would rather book a mediocre band with good attitude than a great band with a piss-poor attitude. I think we have great music though. Original, possibly radio-friendly, but OURs. |
There are great original bands in Sydney, and all around Australia, but what we don't have is any considerable local interest.
It is basically a thankless task that is there if you wish to do it. 'Slave to an unnameable, half-forgotten ambition' is a Dave Graney line I like about it. All the fulfillment you want has to come from inside. Think about fame, and the only conclusion a good mind will reach is that it is worthless. Fame and popularity are arbitrary and speak nothing of talent, achievement or artistry. |
Man, this winter course is going to suck away all of my playing/recording time. 3 weeks, 3 credits, 1 eight-page papers, 3 tests, and $1400.
I now also have to hit up my parents for a temporary loan to cover my Spring tuition. Joyous. |
I really need to fix my Tubescreamer. And get a power supply for all my pedals. And get a wah pedal. Then my rig will be temporarily complete. I can't think of anything else I want. Well... a Jazzmaster. And while I'm at it, an amp even more gangster than the one I have.
My friend is pushing me to get a Twin Reverb. I've never played one, though. |

My pedal board is growing, man. I should get a legit one someday. Currently, it's:
Morley ABY -> Artec 7-band Bass EQ -> Digitech Bass Squeeze compressor -> EHX Bass Big Muff Pi -> Digitech Grunge -> Boss CE-3 Chorus -> Morley Vol Pedal I attached a power strip to my board so that I could add more pedal power supplies if needed. If I decide to get another pedal at any point, though, I'll probably get that SPB-8. Powers 8 pedals and has send/return/input/etc jacks. |
Cool. Sounds good.
I've currently got: Digitech Whammy (has its own power supply) EHX Big Muff Ibanez Tubescreamer Danelectro Delay (which just eats batteries, so I hate using it, sounds sweet, though) Boss Flanger (don't really use it, but if I had a power supply I'd probably hook it up and find a use for it) I think I also want to get rid of my Big Muff in favor of something better. |
Are you looking for an overdrive of some sort? My guitarist has the blues driver pedal and it's great for getting a crunchy, but not uber metal sound.

so raayl is pretty sad today
my girlfriend had to move back home today (14 hour drive away) for the next semester cause she couldnt afford to stay in school near me and i miss her like alot |

ESPECIALLY not toward women. If it makes you feel any better, my girlfriend lives 2 hours away during the school year. I still get to see her on weekends when one of us can afford to make the drive, but it really sucks. Are y'all gonna try to do the long-distance thing? |
yes of course we are
it'll be okay after a while we'll adapt we've already done LDR before on and off for a while now, its kinda gay she'll be moving in with me after this semester or (hopefully) even sooner than that so i mean just gotta deal i guess i bought a new webcam so we can be all cute and stuff and by the way the most common type of pain you feel in prison is the pain of losing your family it beats out every other pain without them even coming close one in mate doing life for murder once said "out of all the pain ive ever felt in my life, the pain of knowing i can never be with my woman again - the pain of knowing she'll never love me again is the worst feeling ive ever felt. nothing comes close. not my crime, regret, or loss of freedom, or fearing for my life in here. knowing i cant have her." pretty potent stuff and its pretty accurate tbqh. |
Good. Artists need pain - and lots of it. Otherwise, we're going to get more Nickelback...and that's gotta be worse than any prison-pain.
|
yeah i'm going to do remakes of old 50s and 60s pop songs
its something ive wanted to do for a while and im on a really romantic kick lately what with getting back into a legit serious relationship again and all those songs are cheesy love songs so ima do it |
I think I may have won another bass face award. Lol. I'll post pictures in a few.

This one makes me look like a 50-year-old rocker from a Clash cover band:

In the last pic, it looks like your strings have green mildew on them because of the lighting.
|
 in the second to last one you look like you're very angrily and unsuccessfuly trying to tame your open B String.

Your singer has baby-bearing hips, Joe.
