It's a sad thing to say, but Apple pretty much have the monopoly on MP3 players. As much as I dislike Apple, they're pretty much the only competitor in the market for portable media players that stayed focused on exactly what people want from their players - decent capacity, good interface and /reasonably/ good software for syncing.

They're also the only MP3 player manufacturer that I can think of that still manufactures high-capacity, mini HDD-based MP3 players, everyone else has seemed to abandoned that for flash memory, for which most of the time, the capacity can't match Apple's equivalent products.

It didn't help that most of the competitors jumped the gun on video playback, I can remember a gadget show episode a few years back where they tested a bunch of multimedia players of the time, and none of the people in the studio, including techs, could get them to work. Ruined the reputation of Archos and the like.

Also, ergonomically, they have an interface that just makes sense - many times I've picked up a creative player and just been like 'wtf' trying to deal with the weird controls.

Admittedly, although my extreme dislike for apple, I don't mind the iPod so much because the bloke who originally designed it was from Manchester \m/ (or at least, I heard - may need to check up on that)

I have a Creative X-fi, and it's amazing. Sound quality is excellent, makes up for the lack of intuitivity (is that a word?)

That does suck... I currently have some FLAC music on a USB stick just cause my iPhone is like, WTF is this? I can't even convert the crap to "proper" iPhone usable files cause iTunes doesn't know what they are either. :angry:

Yeah no support for FLAC is blödsinn. You can rip into ALAC with itunes which is basically the same as FLAC but if you don't have a physical copy of the album you're pretty much boned.

i hate apples awkwardness when it comes to some things, the itouches do rock for music, but i fcking hate itunes.. make sure default ripping is mp3 for starters, same with WMP actually...
