That's cool, but what about your day jobs? If your touring I mean, wouldn't that set that back a bit?

Yeah, I'm usually not the suck up-type - but you guys had a very good sound. A lot of what you hear on these boards just sounds like simplistic underground bullsh!t, and you guys seem like you'll hit it big.

Yes, to sit down and decide to write a prog song is very difficult. But it seems the way my band is going these days, that's just how our music comes out. And sometimes it bites us in the as[COLOR=White]s[/COLOR] when we realize it's just one huge 10-minute wandering piece. Then you have to sit down and give it some structure or else it just turns into wanking.

I find writing in traditional song structure boring.

Yeah, the first full song I wrote seemed to have followed a intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, bridge, chorus, outro formula, but between now and the time I wrote it its almost compeltly different.

You are so lucky. I would love to be in a prog metal band. The one I'm drumming in now is sort of straight-up melodic/bluesy rock, and I managed to get us working on a prog song. I play bongos while the guitarist plays a palm-muted distorted part, and after a couple of minutes I get on drums and the main parts of the song kick in. But it's so much harder to organize a song like that as a drummer, especially when the other members aren't really fans of it.

Either way, I'm always throwing some small influences from Danny Carey, Josh Freese, and Mike Portney into the songs.

But yeah, writing a prog song is really difficult. Omar from The Mars Volta met with each of the five other members of the band, completely individually, to work on the songs he put together for Frances The Mute.

Not quite sure as to how much they've heard, but they know some and appreciate the technical aspects of it, but overall prefer other genre's of R&M over it. But I still really like what we're doing now.

All the people that have asked me to be there drummer are all Tool fans, so I'm not scared. They just have to call me back :(

As for song structure, I've been playing for about 8 or so months, and I can write some fairly catchy riffs, but I can never sit down and put them together. I need some less catchy stuff for the other parts of the song. :p

This doesn't have much to do with Tool, but what do you guys think of Cam de Leon's art? he does most of the artwork and art in the tool videos (for those that didn't know).
I really like it, i think it fits perfectly with the music and each piece has its own life.

I think he has taken a lot of inlfluence from the arist that did The Wall movie by Pink Floyd. They both use very interesting abstract art pieces to create an atmospheric sensation. Great use of imagery as well. :p

EDIT: I think that everything Tool has ever done has been influenced by Pink Floyd, so ignore me. :)

I agree, the art of tool's videos fits to the music, that guy is a real original artist, i hope to see more of his work on the new tool video or album(still waiting it).

He's going to be at the Comic-con in san diego this year, i saw him lst year, hes a pretty cool guy, kind of how i imagined him. And yeah, i'm really hoping for more of his work on this tool cd.

Yeah, i saw The Wall yesterday, and i didn't notice at the moment, but now that you mention it, it has some influence, but i find it way darker and a little sarcastic at times.

Has anyone heard anything more about the friggen Lateralus DVD? The last thing I heard about it was when Ben(Yes, no more AJIG acronym!) posted the Tool newsletter saying that there would be one..but the letter was sent on April Fools day, right? :-/

I wish there was an update to, it would be so fuking sweet, but chances are that if there is one that its going to be like the black sabbath dvd, its good, but i hate it when they cut the songs.

No problem, i've been getting a lot into pink floyd lately, and i understand, althought i only have wish you were here, i do find some similarities in songs like D/R/T or the grudge and pink floyd

You know that the soloish riff in The Grudge is the same keyboard riff used in Shine on you Crazy Diamond, right? It's in the last 2 minutes of the grudge, and the 4 first minutes of SOYCD, if you wanna check it out further. :thumb:

I think Tool is influenced by Floyd as far as the sense of atmosphere that both bands have, its very ethereal, and mystical. Musically however, I think Rush has more of an influence on Tool than Floyd. Songs like Jacobs ladder, Natural Science, and even some of the singles like Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Subdivions. There are Toolisms in those songs and there is a definite influence there. Ive seen videos of adam opening the show with the opening riff to 'A Passage to Bankok'. Daney especially. He borrows several Pert styles and even a straight up riff or 2. (the Patient, during the first chorus, that tom fill he repeats 3 times, pert plays that same riff on one of rush's albums.) Even the way the records are mixed are similar in some respects (the dry drum sound, the loud bass parts,)

Ive kinda always seen Tool as a natural evolution of rush. Rush has over 20 records, so Tool better get crackin...

sorry i dont have the Part of me guitar to post today. I was working on it yesterday (just get the changes on lock down) when my girl came over and kept pressuring me to leave. So what did i do, neglect her and write the changes down on paper. Im pretty sure its 10 pedals. I remember reading an article on Tool's synth work ages ago, about how the beast they have is one in 3 made in the world, and that Kraftwork have one of the others

I think so too, you can easily tell that Natural Science (among others) has influenced Tool in at least some ways.
