Yeah, not really liking the new J5 either.
|
Whats it like? I hear they have Dave Matthews or some cracker on it.
|
J5 are waaaay overrated.
|
I just felt that the album was really lacking something. I don't know, I just know that when I finished listening to it, I just kind of felt like "uhhh, thats it?"
|
Atmosphere used a DJ for the first half of his set, and a live band for the second half.
It was only Slug, the DJ and Brother Ali when I saw them 2 weeks ago. But yeah, that was at a festival so they did have a time-limit. Good show nonetheless, apart from the usual problem with hiphop-shows: too loud bass. The only hiphop-shows I saw which didn't have that problem were The Roots and Automato and both used live-instruments. |

It's kinda what you'd expect would come after Power in Numbers, a little more pop-oriented, almost bordering on Black Eyed Peas territory at points. Actually, they're probably better at that than BEP, though. Still a flair for the old-school, shades of electro and stuff, but at this point, it's almost try-hard nostalgia. Listenable stuff, some ok songs, but not something I feel like dwelling on very long. It is their most diverse album, credit for that, I guess. And Chali 2na is still the man. /Critic off |
I'm looking for some more groups too listen too.
Lately i've been really enjoying A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots. Any recommendations for Hip-hop with a real solid groove, as well as some jazz influence? Highly instrumental is a plus too, but I do love someone who writes good lyrics. |

Try Madlib's Shades of Blue or his work under Sound Directions. I think I've plugged Gang Starr like a million times already but there you go.
|
Colossus are ****ing good.
|
The new J5 isn't here yet ... :(
|
I think a lot of people just downloaded it.
|
When is it out again? A couple of weeks? Been really diggin' Power In Numbers recently.

I really wouldn't get your hopes up too high.
I think a lot of people just downloaded it.
>_> |

yeah they are, i love when jazz and hip hop are mixed together, beautiful combination when done right or jazz and electronica, downtempo type stuff |
I'm still gonna get the new J5 stuff even though you've been slating it a bit.
Also, sample at the end of Sway's This is My Demo is the best sample ever. "I am going to Buckingham Palace to eat champagne with the Queen." "How will you get there?" "I will get naked, jump in the river, swim and don't stop until I see white people." |
Stones Throw is absolutely ****ing ridiculous. Charizma! Peanut Butter Wolf! Madlib! Quasimoto! Dilla!
that said, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas is absolute head music. **** is nuts. |
Yea I like Quasimoto a lot, but I tend to like him better when he is featured in a song.
|
lil flips- i need mine is really good
its the only album i have from him, that i havent listened to, but ive had it for like a month, its really good |
Ok so I just posted up my review of Sway's album. Think I might wait a few more days ,read through it and then edit it a bit more though.
|
I had an idea of what to listen to after Wu Tang ended but now I totally forgot.

Anyone else underwhelmed by the new Roots CD? I never found them to be that great to begin with, but Black Thought just seems to get worse and worse.
|
oh it's already out? Yeah i'm the same...they're not that great to me either, just ok...i'll have to cop that and see for myself
|
Ah I just listened to 36 Chambers again. It's still good stuff. Anyways, do any of you lot do open micing or anything like that. There's a decent club near me which has some decent artists who've performed (Mike Skinner came down last year, but more local fame like Sway can be met there every now and again and lots of other grime acts chill there), I sometimes go and watch though not a whole lot as it can get pretty rough round there so I have to go with a group. I don't mic either really, I can do lyrics alright but my voice just isn't suited to rap.
But anyway, do any of you guys do it? |

It has been leaked. I personally like the album. Not really a contender for hiphop-album of the year (that'd be Cunninglynguists' A Piece Of Strange) but nice nonetheless. It's better than The Tipping Point, and I liked that album as well. The Roots have yet to put out an album I really don't like... :) |
Ooh I want to hear the new Cunninglynguists.
Any of you guys like Cut Chemist? People call him DJ Shadow's understudy. Edan and Mr Lif are featured on his album. |

I thought Piece of Strange was released last year? Or did it just leak way back then? Haven't heard the Roots leak, I'll see if I can get it today. :)
Cut Chemist is good, he's always done right by Jurassic 5. Like I said in alt/indie, digging the song "What's the Altitude." |

Got some songs off In My Mind, and they're tickling my fancy. I don't think it'll be as good as In Search of.. but I bet it's better than Fly or Die. "Big White Spaceship" is where it's at.
|
I got the Pharrell and Roots leaks today. Yessssssss.

Busta Rhymes: what the hell went wrong? |
Too many guest spots. Although, if every track was just Busta, I don't think that would've helped all that much either.
Edit: And I generally like to give Busta the benefit of the doubt. |
He did a song with Sean Paul. Downhill from there.

Busta Rhymes: what the hell went wrong?
yeah really, "touch it" was the only thing i kinda liked as far as a single, the rest is garbage, like rc said, too many guests spots, if it's one thing i hate more, it's people who spot on albums in which they have no business being on, it just ruins the record, it's like if i want to hear other people rap, i'll go listen to them, i didn't come to hear a group i came to hear BUSTA, it annoys me especially when you know that artist is talented, but they got to bring their whole crew on their record and it just makes it 10x worse, seems like that's how things are though...it's like...can one artist just come out pure, solo, by themselves and only that person to the point where you can see some growth, depth and or development? it starts to get a little frustrating...also hate when the rapping is good, then like outta the blue someone is trying to get all "emotional" and the whole flow is like gone, just singing (mind you this isn't some regular old singer either, it's a friend of a friend doing a favor, yet they sound like crap!) LOL let me end my rant, i could go on and on, sorry |

Drop me your emailadress and I'll send it to you. And yes, the album is definitely 2006, it was released somewhere in january of february though. Does anybody here dig Christina Aguilera's new song Ain't No Other Man? It's produced by DJ Premier and I actually like it, never thought I'd say that from a song of hers. |

I really need to get that. The only Outkast albums I have are Speakerboxx/Love Below, and Stankonia, and already they're one of my favorite groups. |
