Im only a n00b when it comes to slayer, in fact I didn't really listen to them until last week. I got a mix CD from my friend, Black Magic is my favourite song, is all the songs off that album good?
Black Magic is off the album Show No Mercy and yes, they are all just as good as Black Magic.

Hell Awaits is my personal favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of the first 4-5 albums

lightningmetal666 09-06-2005 06:34 PM
What do you guys thinks of Tom on bass, I haven't heard any thing to crazy from him but what do you think of it.
Tom is pretty good on bass IMO. He doesn't really have very difficult melodic lines but he does work as hard as Jeff or Kerry. In fact he works harder as he is also the singer. I play guitar and I absolutely CANNOT sing while playing their fast and hard stuff. (ie raining blood, hell awaits, etc.) Props go to Tom for that one.

I think the thing that I like most about tom is his personality when he is on stage. He acts like he is just one step from killing somebody, or like he's possessed by a demon or something. It's so sick.

FatalEnergy 09-06-2005 07:33 PM

Tom actually had some decent bass lines on Hell Awaits. Listen to Crypts of Eternity or At Dawn They Sleep. It's really the only time in Slayer's history that he actually shown he could play bass. Overall, he's not bad, he just dosen't do much. I agree with what was said above, he's got a great stage presence and ......used to have a good voice. Well, it's still good live at least.

nontie69 09-06-2005 08:35 PM

yeah like i said before slayer isnt the same without toms bass lines, it sounds so different without them, when im playin with my band and im not playin bass and there playin a song alone it doesnt sound as heavy without the bass.

MRDuCran 09-06-2005 08:42 PM

I've seen Slayer live twice and without Toms bass, Raining Bllod wouldn't sound so good. I didn't know that he hits the open E on every tom hit that Dave does in the intro until then.

Sleepy 09-06-2005 09:19 PM

Raining Blood is my cell phone ringtone :) Awesome stuff.

lightningmetal666 09-09-2005 03:08 PM

I'm trying to get the slayer riff by riff book. Is it any good? Also does anyone know where I can get the hell awaits guitar book? I think all of their books are out of print.

KittensInMicrowaves 09-09-2005 03:17 PM
Raining Blood is my cell phone ringtone :) Awesome stuff.
Same here

lightningmetal666 09-09-2005 03:19 PM

I wish I had a cell phone. I don't really have anyone to call so I guess I don't need one.
That would be cool though, have raining blood or dead skin mask play while you're just chillin'.

Try eBay, and I wouldn't bother with that riff-by-riff book, since you don't actually get full songs. Just use Powertab. There are loads of good powertabs of Slayer songs at http://www.powertabs.net

they were one of my favorite bands for a while, but they arnt one of my favorites anymore Ive grown out of them, but I still love them though. I own every album :D

RustedPieces 09-11-2005 12:32 PM

I love Payback, it's a good song to listen to when you're pissed off.

I own almost all of them. I'm pretty sure I'll grow out of them aswell. Metallica was my favorite band for the longest time, then Megadeth replaced them.. now it's Slayer for right now.

123.

I love the chorus. Most times when I'm really stressed out I'll just play that song and scream the lyrics in my room. This in turn freaks out my parents (who currently are the source of my stress) and they start wondering about me. /gives the famous Tom Arraya grin

How do you guys pass the swear filter? I've been posting here for a while and I feel the time has come for me to learn this technique.

I've never scene it done that way, but it works.

Funny thing today. I'm wearing my Slayer shirt, and my schools football coach saw me and threw the horns up and yelled "Hell yeah, Slayer!"

yay, I learned a new skill. I can freely curse as I please. I hate censorship.

Yeah it's kinda funny who's a fan of slayer. I had a college professor who told me he went to almost every show on the Reign in blood tour. Lucky bastard.

edit: excuse me but i meant to say Fuck censorship.
Anyone in here big Slayer fans? I am, and I felt like making a thread so all of us can discuss them. I'll start this thing off by asking, what are some of your favorite riffs from Slayer songs?
I'd have to say Raining Blood, and I only like the solo at the beggining. They are an ok band.

Hey welcome to the forums. That's an old post so we don't respond to them.

Try to stick to topics and discussion that's currently going on.

Moving on......

Slayer is a great band as they prove you don't have to know guitar to be a guitar legend. :p

They are my favorite band and Hell Awaits is my current fav. song. Then again I recently got the album hell awaits so that would explain it.

Anyone here fans of their early 90s stuff?

Nostalgia 09-12-2005 04:33 PM

IMO SITA owned it was great a little expiermental and in a way was a little like south of heaven, but I still don't think any album of theirs compared to hell awaits I just can't stand the recording.

lightningmetal666 09-12-2005 04:52 PM

I meant like Divine Intervention and Diablos In Musica (Yeah I know that's late 90s stuff) Any opinions on that kinda stuff?

Bazarov 09-12-2005 05:40 PM

Yeah I like Divine Intervention, Diablos In Musica and God Hates us All, it's just that there's only a few songs of each of those albums I like. Divine Intervention is my favorite out of those three though.

lightningmetal666 09-12-2005 06:34 PM

I like Killing Fields the best on that record the best. Screaming the lyrics while you're riffin' on guitar is that best way to go for that song.

Dittohead sounds like Tom has gangsta rap envy. He is trying to rhyme every word as fast as he can. IMO. In this case the lyrics are actually good.

Yeah actually I think King wrote some good lyrics for that song***

***I think Kerry wrote Dittohead's lyrics. That's what I've been told... I'm going to look inside my Divine Intervention album to see if it says who wrote the lyrics.

EDIT- Yup, it says Dittohead (lyrics & music: King)

Nostalgia 09-12-2005 07:25 PM

Hmm...I don't know if this is a rumor or its true, I have heard alot from people and sites that Kerry Is a real jerk. Do you know if this is true

LawnJockeyJose 09-12-2005 08:25 PM

Well, sorry about bumping but I gotta comment on Slayer.

Badass

Disciple by far, followed by Bloodline for me....

I've listened to Raining Blood and Angel of Death too much, but they're still awesome, great for just wanting the feeling to hurt somebody to use.... constructively :)

Nah, man you didn't really bump it. Slayer on the first page is always a good thing. Plus this threads been getting good conversation mods only look down on bumped threads when someone bumps a thread that's almost a month old to say something pointless. Welcome to the forum. Glad to see another Slayer fan.
Hmm...I don't know if this is a rumor or its true, I have heard alot from people and sites that Kerry Is a real jerk. Do you know if this is true
I've heard from many that's he's an asshole to people, yet I've heard from one of my friends that went to see him on the guitar abuse thing that he was a nice guy.

lightningmetal666 09-13-2005 04:59 PM

Well he does have love and respect for Dime so he can't be all that bad.....

Then again according to Dave Mustaine he is an asshole so who knows.
I think Dave's exact words were....
I don't personally hate the guys but he has this attitude of where he just hates everybody. He acts like he is the greatest guitar player when I personally taught him a lot of what he knows when he was touring and doing stuff with Megadeth.
......Wait a minute. You got banned again butcher? That really sucks. There seem to be less and less ppl posting here and I'm afraid that this thread might die if we don't get some more ppl in here.

RustedPieces 09-13-2005 05:05 PM

Yeah I heard Kerry was a total asshole. He starts stuff with everyone.

heavy metal kid 09-13-2005 05:26 PM
Yeah I heard Kerry was a total asshole. He starts stuff with everyone.
he's just a big mouth.

Release of the black album:
Kirk Hammett is one of the most overrated guitarists to grace the earth.
Release of St. Anger:
Kirk Hammett is one of the most talented guitarists on earth, he shouldn't stop soloing.

But i still like his guitar work on Slayer.

Nostalgia 09-13-2005 05:50 PM

Meh I don't really like Kerry's work Don't get me wrong he is super talented but I'll take Jeff over kerry any day.

Oh well I'll be back tomorrow.
Meh I don't really like Kerry's work Don't get me wrong he is super talented but I'll take Jeff over kerry any day.
Same here. King is really fast and better than many guitar players, but I like Jeff a lot more.

Apocalyptic Raids 09-14-2005 04:10 AM

I like the songs Jeff has written better, but as far as solos go, they aren't really all that different.

Jasarn 09-14-2005 04:24 AM

I love the riff in Spill the Blood.

cos you know that i can 09-14-2005 05:38 AM

I own about 5 Slayer albums, and still wanna finish collecting. Most bands I woulda got bored of by now, but these guys...

Gotta love Hell Awaits, Seasons in the Abyss and Bitter Peace. They were amzing live when I saw them as well.
