If you want the best representation of constistency - go studio album. If you want an incredible range of some of their very best songs with a few flaws - go Budokan.

Speaking of that, I've just finished watching the DVD. Disappear is an incredible song. One of my favourites by DT. Just thought I'd mention that...
Yeah, when I first heard Disappear I didn't think much of it. But when I was watching Live at Budokan and it came on, I wondered why I never really liked such a amazing song.

It's probably because it's an understated song on 6DOIT. You look at the tracklisting for the first disc and you automatically think that it's a filler tune, because of the length compared to the collosuses before it. Which is a shame, as it's my favourite song on the album.

The only track i really dislike on SDOIT on the first disk is The Great Debate. It just dosent grow on me aye.

MAthiAS 03-05-2005 07:02 PM

I love the Great Debate, its got some awesome riffs. Reminds me of Symphony X a lot.

BradyEB 03-06-2005 03:31 AM

Fair enough, maybe it will grow one day.

Awake is heavier than I&W. Check "the mirror" here

Fallen Zero 03-07-2005 08:49 PM

I love Images and Words. Do they have any other songs that are in the similar genre/style of "Take The Time".

GreyAssassingtr1 03-07-2005 08:53 PM

^ your same avatars are confusing me. i'm just now hearing of DT (yes i have been living under a rock......in a hole) and am currently downloading "A Glass Prison" and "A Change of Seasons". what should i buy as my first dream theater album?

MNbassist78 03-07-2005 11:24 PM

I say go with Awake or Images and Words. Awake is heavier but I personaly like Images and Words better. They both are great albums. Also,

Follow the link and you can hear some of their stuff from all their albums.

Come on people give Metropolis Pt 2 some love. its a great album.

The JoZ 03-08-2005 12:51 AM

It's an overrated album, really.

The concept is great, and the storytelling good...but the music, I mean...they have far better songs than the stuff on SFAM.

Werny 03-08-2005 03:27 AM

I got some Dream Theater stuff...

I think overall they're pretty hardcore, but they're too radiofriendly to keep me interested for long.

(yes I know, they have 10 minute songs, but just because they're lengthy doesn't mean they aren't radiofriendly in sound)

badtaste 03-08-2005 05:50 AM

whoa... I thought this thread died ages ago.

Go DT.

i love how their songs are so long and have totally different styles, keys and riffs all rolled up into one song.

IvortheEngineDriver 03-08-2005 12:01 PM

I don't like Metropolis Part 1 per se...but man, the middle part of the song is amazing! the part when Myung is tapping and the keyboard does some wierd scale...****ing amazing!!!!

The only song of theirs that is radio friendly is actually on the radio, "As I Am"

Seriously, DT stuff is generally too complex to be radio friendly.

Some of their stuff off Images and Words might be radio friendly, but generally, anything from Awake on really isn't, save "As I Am"
