Welcome back...does your band have a website or any samples of the songs for listening?
I am trying to get Dreamweaver as we speak, and yes all that will be up. It's going to be a badass website. Lotta time though, won't be up for a while. But yes we will have samples, our drummer quit last night...  so we are looking for another. He is good lol going to be hard replacing him.
on the Opeth dvd, Mikeal mentions that they are going to release the dvd as a live-CD

does anyone know when we can expect this ?
You mean a seperate Lamentations, the same thing as the content on the DVD but just in audio form? I haven't ever heard about this, but that would be absolutely grand if it was true.

What does everyone here think about some of the band members talent?
I think Mikael is a superb songwriter and lyricist... he seems to never run out of awesome riffs and build ups, and alot of his lyrics seem to shine, especially on Still Life. The Martins are both very talented to, I like how M. Lopez has a neat twist to some of his drumming of the last two albums and some of BWP... he's got some sort of latin percussion style drumming in there.. and it sounds really good with the music.

SofaKing713 11-04-2004 07:38 PM

Martin Lopez started playing drums when he was 4. He is absolutly amazing. Very inovative and talented. One of my favorite drummers of all time.

Ditto, he is the only metal drummer that I think fits perfectly with Opeth.

Indeed. I was listening to the end of the song BWP last night and heard some weird shlt in the background before he says "Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark..." When the song was over I went back to listen to it again(I hate stopping songs before they are over) and couldn't hear it. I was half asleep though lol. Anyways, the end to that song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. best 2 songs from Blackwater Park cd 1)Bleak, 2)Blackwater Park. Yes Still Life is an excellent CD. When I first got it I was like WTF is this!? OPETH GROWS ON YOU LIKE VINES! And it did. It's a great piece of work. I do not like one Opeth LP better then the other cause they all have a different vibe. If I am in the MAYH mood, I will listen to that, If I want to listen to Deliverance, I put it in. I know all Opeth lyrics by heart now except for "White Cluster" and some of "The Apostle In Triumph".

The lyrics in Blackwater Park are insane. Some of the best writing I have ever read to a song. I think thats my "heaviest" Opeth song, climax to the end then all hell breaks loose. I do believe it's about some kind of government cover up and it failed. Whatever they were keeping captive, he watched and they took over destroying everything. Thats what I get from it.

We have all lost it now
Catching the flakes of dismay
Born the travesty of man
Regular pulse midst pandemonium
You're plucked to the mass
Parched with thirst for the wicked

Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark
The sun sets forever over Blackwater park

How about Mendez? What songs does he shine on? I'm not a very bassified person, but it seems to me that there is some good part on BWP.

"Basically, 'Blackwater Park' doesn't have to be a park. It is just symbolic for some kind of dark place. It could be within or whatever. The song 'Blackwater Park' is about how disgusted I am with people sometimes. I just wanted to create some kind of very, very disgusting and very dark kind of mood with that track....It's basically about disregard towards humans in general, but spiced up to be even more twisted."

-Mikael Akerfeldt

Mike's words himself about the song. But like you said, it's whatever you get from it.

uhm
that's the good part about death metal and especially Opeth, the basswork is very present.

so most tracks actually
but for some very menacing and dramatic sound
the drapery falls,
and the outro of deliverance, nice teamwork between Martin and Martin :p
also: windowpane, and in my time of need of the d**nation album are songs where he shines on IMO.
but check out the entire d**nation album, you won't be dissapointed

I though I'd read all the 28 pages before I posted, but now there is nothing left to say taht hasnt been said, ummm I love Opeth?

I think it's just michael thats what I gather from the lamentations documentary. Any way I haven't read the other 28 pages so some one might have said this already but anyway. I'm gonna say that I hate death metal, I generally find it to be monotonous self indulgent crap, but there is a wee special place for opeth in my heart. They sort of lured me ointo listening to the heavy stuff with the melodies I first heard on Blackwater park like harvest or the beginning and end of dirge for november, but gradually I started to listen to the drapery falls and so on and it kinda sucked me in. Needless to say ****ation is my favourite album, a melodic album that actually turned out to be dark is something

LordDargon 11-05-2004 09:49 AM

^ What is that supposed to mean?

Anyways, that song was more interesting than the other ones I heard, but when I called them "Slowpeth" I didn't mean their actual speed. I listen to Candlemass, who are doom metal and therefore immensely slow. I just meant that I thought they were boring, and I still do. I'm not gonna sit through an hour of yawnfest just to hear a cool riff, some good drumming, and a short but decent solo.

Det_Nosnip 11-05-2004 10:49 AM

I don't understand why you then feel that you have to keep posting on the Opeth thread about this. They're not your thing; great. Move on with your life and focus on the music that you DO enjoy.

LordDargon 11-05-2004 10:53 AM

I figured Flynn would be interested in my opinion on the song HE RECOMMENDED ME TO DOWNLOAD.

If I recommend someone a song, I expect feedback, good or bad.

Toozey 11-05-2004 10:57 AM

Opeth lose.

LordDargon 11-05-2004 10:57 AM

agreed

Short?! They don't last for a whole song, but that doesn't mean they're short. Basically the third of The Funeral Portrait is solo's and A Fair Judgement's second solo is 1:00-1:30 minutes.

I personally like all of the "yawnfest" because I know they will blow up into something awesome. There are only a couple of parts in Orchid and Morningrise that I think are too long and don't really like.
Black Sabbath.....they created the genre, if it weren't for them there would be no opeth, because all the bands that inspired opeth would not exsist in their entity either

I just started getting into Opeth a couple days ago. I bought Blackwater Park and have listened to it probably 10 times through already. I am, quite simply, amazed. Never before have I heard such a perfect mesh of instruments and vocals. They also have some of the most downright addictive riffs I've ever heard.

Needless to say I will be buying the rest of their albums soon.
if u need thier albums i own all of them and will give them over Aol instant messenger my aol is in my profile

i personally love opeth, and the are the BEST metal band, i dk waht u say, i cant choose between Blackwater park or morningrise, they are so great, ****ation suprised me when i heard it but it grew on me and kicks @ss, those who havent

ænima 11-06-2004 01:55 AM

im getting into Opeth more now i think their music is great and i am meaning to go out and get one or two of there albums. ive only liked them for afew months now and i think by buying some of their albums ill get into them even more with songs like Black Rose Immortal, To Bid You Farewell, Face of Melinda, The Moor, The Night And The Silent Water, In Mist She Was Standing, Bleak how couldnt you like them.

Det_Nosnip 11-06-2004 02:44 AM

How couldn't you like them?

1) Their average song is over 6 minutes long, some ranging over 10 minutes
2) They change moods, tempos, and times more than nu-metal bands change chords
3) Mikael Akerfeldt can sound really scary
4) Mikael Akerfeldt can sound really soft and soothing

They're one of my favorite bands, but I definetly wouldn't call their music "easy listening." They have a very specific (but devoted) fan base, which is why they rock.

Toozey 11-06-2004 03:34 AM

I don't like them because the riffs are uninspired, boring and just not very good. It doesn't matter if the songs change moods many times, its just changing suck many times.

Det_Nosnip 11-06-2004 03:41 AM

Well, that's your opinion. Great. You don't like the band...why are you on this thread?

Toozey 11-06-2004 04:03 AM

To give my opinion.

Does that chick who keeps on screaming really loud in the DVD piss anyone else off? I mean it was funny the first time she did it, but then she kept on ruining the entire concert with her retarded yells.

EDIT: Also I got Morningrise today, it didnt make a good impression on me at first, but after 5 or 6 listens its really growing on me, great music. Although I still dont think Mikael's voice is as good as it is on the later records, and the acoustic bits dont fit in as well. But a great Opeth album none the less.

Yeah, he really focused on clean vocals around the Still Life/Blackwater Park era, which has had a profound effect on him. Plus, the recording quality kinda blew on all of their albums before BWP. :(
Flynn, I suggest you shut the **** up and stop critisizing other people's "worthless internet lives" when you're using the internet, just like any one of us, to access MX.
I suggest you try Prozac...It might take away some of that Built Up Anger deep within you. I don't even know you so please stay out of other people's affairs...or try applying for a REFEREE job for the NFL, since you seem to be good at coaching an arguement. I started this thread, and If people bad-mouth Opeth, they can take it as they dish it. I run into a lot of people like you every day. You are the type to be nice to everyone till you get power then you transform into a pr1ck. So do me a favor and please don't reply to me anymore.
