Guitarwise? I ain't a clue what's good to learn and what isn't. Though I'd always stick with Metallica as a good start. I love them, I do.

at the moment its just a generic metal riff but i'm going to expand upon it and [I]try[/I] to put some interesting bass on there, maybe a solo, but i suck so its hard

I'm not a fan of bass solos. I think in solo bass pieces, sure, naturally. But in metal songs in general, the guitar does it better. Call me old fashioned, or just think I'm covering up for my inability to play one, but hey.

I think Metallica are overrated, sure, and possibly just popular. But I still think their stuff is very good. Were Kill 'Em All or Ride the Lightning as poular and rated as they are now when they came out? There's nothing wrong with them IMO.

And being overrated, means they're overrated for a reason. If that's for playing good music, then what can you do?

same here, BUT, i need to make the piece interesting bass wise for the league
i could put a guitar solo on but it would be a bit too samey and boring....i've got ages yet anyway so i dunno

Ah. I just don't have enough talent and confidence to enter the league. I'm happy listening to what others churn out instead :)

Yes, I like modern rock, no it wouldn't exist without the Beatles (apparently), and yes, I hate the Beatles. I see no reason in trying to find bands which aren't popular to like though...

Like when people say Metallica sold out. No, they just got to a wider audience, just like any band wants to. Why criticise for them doing what they set out to do? People for some reason want little bands to put in their back pocket, and be cool to listen to, and only want themselves to listen to it. I have no idea why...

Well, I may do more recording over holidays, but I have a lot of time to lose, and I can't come up with ideas for songs in the first place. Its not that I suck, its that I don't have enough ideas to have to suck.

Its because with Metallica is played by everyone... Like its all you ever hear... the band may be alright but its the people who support them.

So if Unearth suddenly gained Metallica's fanbase, you'd hate them?

Also it seems that the first song they write 'One' Was there best... Also i just don't like people going round thinking Metallica are the best have the world to offer... where there are underground bands that are better (in my mind)

Of course there are better bands than Metallica, but why live in a society where you are forced to only be able to like the best? That way leads to elitism as far as I've seen.

And yes, One is one of their best songs, if not their absolute best. The version on S&M is jaw dropping.

My favourite at the moment is Call of Ktulu though.

no, its just i usually long to have a sunday off work and no i have i'm doing sweet FA

Also the Drumming is pretty poor as its pretty much the same (as my drummer tells me) the singing doesnt do it for me yet Kirk Hammet is really cool and i like him

Ah, I love Hetfield's voice. His recent one anyway. Post Black Album. When he had to learn to sing properly. Kirk Hammett is infact very overrated, and there are many better guitarists, but I think he is pretty slick still! Lars isn't the best at all, and recently, his drumming has slowed down, and become sloppy, yet I think he still strives to find good new beats (if you've seen SKOM, you'll see what I mean), and without his business sense and songwriting (look at how many writing credits Ulrich has) it wouldn't be Metallica. I wouldn't have it any other way :)
