So The Wicked Symphony is the best power metal album I've heard in a long time. It just does everything right. It's kinda hard to focus on Angels of Babylon and I wished Tobias would have released it later in the year or something...not on the same day. Two new Avantasia albums in a day is kinda much.
|
does anyone know when the new kamelot album is being released? only could find a release date of march 22nd but its past that now
|
I'm very, very picky about power metal vocals, but I'm a tremendous Kamelot fan, and whether I'll take flak for this or not, I'm into Dragonforce (except for their most recent release). I have some other stuff around here, and a few genre benders like Into Eternity, Pathosray and Suspyre. I am absolutely loving Mutiny Within right now, too.
I am so disappointed with Darkwater, though. I love their instrumentals, but their vocalist embodies all the worst of the genre, and none whatsoever of the good. |
My gf seems to like Kamelot, I remember finding them a bit boring. Dragonforce are alright, the newly remixed/remastered version of Valley of the Damned is pretty good.
Has anyone else listened to Castle of Yesterday by Reptilian? I've had the song Castle of Yesterday for years and finally remembered to check out the rest of the album a few weeks ago, its not really anything amazing but its worth a listen. I was getting back into Bal-Sagoth as well t'other day, I consider them to be dark power metal, what does everyone else think? |
I really liked Black halo and even ghost opera by kamelot, been meaning to get some of there past albums.
as for dragonforce, ive only listened to inhuman rampage and though i did like it the first listen it got old quick. |
I'd avoid Kamelot's first two albums, if I were you. Their original vocalist was flat-out horrid. Personally, I love everything from Epica to Ghost Opera; I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. If it were possible, I would drink Roy Khan's voice.
|
I have a question for you guys. Two of my favorite bands, CoB and Wintersun both have power metal influence (although I wouldn't say they are power metal). Are there any other bands with harsh vocals, but have a sound that is reminiscent of power metal?
|
Skyfire, Norther, Equilibrium, Ensiferum.
Guys, new Rhapsody is EPIC! Go listen. My words can't do it justice. Maybe that's just the fanboy reaction, as I don't think it's quite as epic as Power of the Dragonflame but definitely the best neoclassical wankery from them since that, probably best ever. New Avantasia was beyond expectations I liked The Scarecrow very much but I think that this expands and improves upon it. Wicked Symphony was immense. Angel of babylon was less sick but a good listen. Much lesser power metal. |
the new Kiuas is pretty good
|
my gf got The Wicked Symphony for her b'day. She enjoyed it, I couldn't get past the opening track before getting bored :-\
|
I like it. Angel of Babylon is okay, but not nearly as good as TWS.
|
Avantasia is usually one big vocal orgasm and The Wicked Symphony was probably their best. Kind of makes the last Edguy album look crummy. And I suppose it was crummy anyway save for a few songs.

Totally forgot that this was released yesterday. |

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Tinnitus Sanctus. I really like Rocket Ride though. |
Rocket Ride was indeed bitchin'. I think that is the direction Edguy should take to stay relevant. Either that or another Hellfire Club with uniquely new songs.
Power metal has been pleasing me greatly as of late. I always liked it and fell in love with the classics but the more, erm, flamboyant symphonic styling is extremely consistent. Rhapsody, Fairyland, Dark Moor, Freedom Call, Savage Circus, Avantasia and a bunch of other less notable ones. Soon to be Blind Guardian, Nightwish, and Kamelot. Not bad at all. Obviously I don't think that there are enough awesome power metal bands so I turn to folk/viking/melodic death stuff for most of my metal these days. Point is the genre is still thriving. |
Listening to the new Rhapsody. I like how it took under two minutes to start hearing music, that has to be a record, although the first song is basically just italian folk.
edit: aw ****, i had it on shuffle. nevermind |

I was actually shocked to hear that Fairyland is really good and they're probably the newest power metal band I've gotten into. |
Yeah definitely not one to miss in the sea of mediocre power metal clones. They don't get enough credit, they were sick from the beginning. I just wish Philippe Giordana would hold on to band members for more than an album.

yayy new Blind Guardian sometime around the end of summer!
1. Sacred Worlds 09:17 2. Tanelorn 05:58 3. Road of No Release 06:30 4. Ride Into Obsession 04:46 5. Curse My Name 05:52 6. Valkyries 06:38 7. Control the Divine 05:26 8. War of the Thrones 04:55 9. A Voice in the Dark 05:41 10. Wheel of Time 08:55 i have a good feeling about this |
I've been obsessed with the song "My Spirit Will Go On" by Dragonforce lately. I haven't bothered listening to much else by them but this song is just great to me.
I think it's the riff after the chorus. |
Best Dragonforce song. Their overall style is pretty much the same thing as that song too. Listen to Sonic Firestorm because that's the best album.
|
*Valley of the Damned
|
So I was checking out Charred Walls of the Damned, and I decided that I really just don't enjoy Ripper Owens voice. Kills the band, imo.
|
I'm usually a fan of Rippers vocals but Charred Walls of the Damned was a miss for me. New Rhapsody is a return to form though.
|
Dude, Tim Owens rules.
Haven't heard him with that band, though. Also:
Yes Sputnik he is describing you wihth his insults. The way you act like the stereotypical Negro (listening to rap) and how most of you likely do drugs (get high) and continue to dress, walk, talk, look an act like homosexuals (Indie kids, hipsters) No sooner do you denounce Varg as you will embrace him if people start declaring this album is good and a million reviews and ratings start coming. Posers.
|
**** yeah for new Blind Guardian, I can't wait. There are an assload of great new power metal albums this year.
**** yeah for My Spirit Will Go On. As much as I bash Dragonforce they do have some sick songs if you're able to forget that 95% of them sound the exact same. Tim Owens... good singer but he has made A LOT of really bad music. Jugulator anyone? Didn't think so. He has also made some good music but the guy is seriously inconsistent. He was great on the new Avantasia although that's only one song. |
Man, Sabaton are really damn good
ordering the limited edition of The Art of War right now, should be awesome |
I kind of wish the singer was a tenor but I wouldn't kick him out of the band, it works. They're a greatest hits kind of band in my opinion. Take their 10 most memorable songs and you have a sick show, although they can get a little tedious after a little while.
All in all they're nut-bustingly awesome, especially live. |
Yeah, I'd really want to see them live, would be an awesome show.
|
I kind of wish the singer was a tenor
That would make them lose all of their originality. |
What's some catchy and fast power metal with technical guitar riffs and searing leads, but not as much keyboards? Such as Blind Guardian, Angra, etc... I'm rarely in a power metal mood, and I typically stick to bands I've been listening to for years, but I need something fresh.
|
Galloglass - Legends From Now and Nevermore
might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's one of the few power metal albums I care for. |
blind guardian album leaked
|
of course im waiting for the NA release date...so far away :(
listened to Tanelorn and A Voice in the Dark that they put up, though and wow. I'm so excited, this is extremely ****ing good. |
very A Night At The Opera
alright, gonna say it's A Night At the Opera as performed by Persuader |
*checks balls*
Yep they hurt like hell. New BG was most definitely off the hook. |
Listening to the new BG right now. ****ing great so far.
EDIT: Yes, definitely fap-worthy. |
very A Night At The Opera
alright, gonna say it's A Night At the Opera as performed by Persuader
I've only heard two full songs but I feel that they both have that magic that made older BG so good, which is something that was absent in A Twist in the Myth for me, despite it being a good album anyway. Anyway, I ordered the album from amazon.co.uk :p should have it in a week or so...listening to these songs again, and god, i cant ****ing wait |
I'd say it's better than A Twist in the Myth, no doubt.
Very riffy album on the whole |
