Flynn, calm the **** down, man. Early Opeth DOES share many characteristics of the Gothenburg sound....and Mikael has repeatedly said in interviews that he got sick of that sound, which is why he himself doesn't like those albums as much. They weren't exactly Gothenburg, but there WERE similarities.

What toaster implied was that a first time listener who has NEVER heard of the band might mistake Orchid/Morningrise material for "Gothenburg crap." He never said that Orchid was crap.

They DO play Morningrise+Orchid songs live, especially "Advent," which gets frequent plays. As far as why they don't play them often...well, the band has released what, 8 albums now...and have been playing that material for years. Maybe they're sick of it. Don't you think you'd get at least a LITTLE tired of playing the same music for 11 years? :rolleyes:

What genre are they? I've heard a lot about them but I'm not familiar with their music.

Trip-Hop, from what I gather.

It's heavy in hip-hop beats, but it's more ambient, kind of.. or... something.
Also, there's some nice lady vocals on Mezzanine, which makes it all the better. It's also much more instrumentally interesting than hip-hop.

Trip-hop. Think...umm....the electronic influences in Radiohead, maybe? I dunno.....kinda hard to describe. Very trippy and atmospheric. The big single from Mezzanine was "Teardrop," which featured very beautiful female vocals.

I'm just guessing here but..... trip-hop?

Opeth has that on [I]all[/I] of their records, even D@mnation. Yeah, god forbid they do any dual guitar harmonies. That's what makes Opeth so great, their ability to do that.

Loads of people have already told you that you misunderstood what he was trying to say, but you ignored them and are continuing to do so. Mikael himself has said that that album is particularly reminiscient of the style of many of those types of bands and that he's sick of it. I think they're great too, but to say that it's the end-all, be-all is misguided, as is your idea that "older" somehow makes it better. And I see that you continue to insist that Ghost Reveries is somehow automatically terrible simply because you claim "hardcore fans will tell you that their oldest ones are best," and you consider yourself to be a hardcore fan.

However, my main purpose here is in a mod capacity, in that I was asked by a user to monitor the level of flaming in this thread.

Look, one of the greatest things about Opeth is how diverse they are, musically...and, by extension, how diverse a fanbase they have. Some people will really like the Orchid and Morningrise albums, a million people will be obsessed with Blackwater Park and think that it's the only album Opeth has ever made ( ;) ), some will be Dam nation freaks, etc. You obviously are really into their early material, and you're not alone...but your opinion also doesn't represent the "hardcore" Opeth fan. A hardcore Opeth fan is somebody who enjoys it ALL....everything from Orchid to Ghost Reveries. So if somebody dislikes Orchid...don't get so upset about it. His or her tastes are simply different than yours. I don't yell at you for not liking Ghost Reveries, or at Darkness for not liking Godhead's Lament despite the fact that it's easily one of Opeth's greatest songs ( ;) ), so lay off of the guy. If they're posting on this thread, then obviously they have decent taste in music, so there's no reason to flame them.

I just get sick of posters typing ignorance. The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed. It makes me angry, especially when they put ignorance in the mouths of others. But you weren't defending your opinion, you were attacking others for holding and defending theirs. And toaster most certainly did NOT say that Orchid was crap. If anything, he was making reference to the kind of elitist pricks that WOULD dismiss it as crap, and criticizing THEM. You are suffering from a fundamental misunderstanding of how you feel you are conducting yourself, which is at odds with what other people are percieving, and it's blinding you to how you're truly behaving.

To think that Orchid is bad is NOT "blasphemy." It is not illegal for a person to say that in the Opeth thread. It is not illegal for someone to criticize old material. If you disagree, you debate and eventually (hopefully) amicably choose to disagree. This is not what you have been doing. You have ordered users to never post in the thread again for a criticism they have said of a revered song of yours, and you have said that they consequently know "nothing about music" for holding it. These are not the ways a debater, who is defending his opinion, conducts himself. Therefore, you cannot say that that's all you've been doing.
