It takes something really good, like The Godfather, or a 15-inning baseball playoff game, to exceed two and a half hours and still be palatable. You gotta draw the line somewhere.
That's the problem with a lot of people. It's a quick-fix society. I want gratification and I want it NOW!

I'm not saying that the US is full of these people, but there's obviously a reason why you guys don't get the joy of Cricket.

If you're talking about that game last year in the NLDS, as much as I love baseball, that was a chore to watch. So fucking tedious.

///

And King Kong was very long, but it was hardly boring. It wasn't nearly as good as people made it out to be. Best movie of the year? My ass.

But yeah, Jackson needs to stop with the over-the-top epic stuff he loves.
I'm not saying that the US is full of these people, but there's obviously a reason why you guys don't get the joy of Cricket.
Well, that's simply because we don't drink nearly enough to ignore the fact that the game makes no sense at all :p
That's the problem with a lot of people. It's a quick-fix society. I want gratification and I want it NOW!
I think two and a half hours is a very reasonable place to draw the line.

Why, the AL has more tradition?

Or because most NL playoff series games are just plain uninteresting?

Illmatic 01-03-2006 06:59 PM
Why, the AL has more tradition?

Well, no, it's because I root for an AL team.

That, and the NL seems so...sterile. Cubs/Cardinals rivalry aside, there is nothing remotely exciting about it. I mean hell, look at the Cardinals. I hope they win the World Series next year, just to see how they celebrate--I think they'd line up single-file while Tony La Russa pours them each a glass of champagne. They are the most boring team in professional sports...I've never seen a team less excited about a season-saving home run (like Pujols had against Houston in the NLCS), and I've never seen a team look less enthuiastic about playing with each other.

It kind of trickles down to the rest of the league. The Astros? Braves? Padres? Who really cares? What's their deal? There's this intense lassez-faire attitude surrounding the whole league. Cardinals fans would give Larry Walker a standing O after he grounded into a double play. The Braves don't have any fans, and any fans they do have have been driven into numb complacency by 15432 straight playoff appearances. Padres fans are too laid-back, probably because they know that they live in freaking San Diego. I don't know anything about the city of Houston and I'd like to keep it that way. Dodgers fans are notorious fair weather fans (erm, no offense). Mets fans are more sad than anything. And Wrigley Field is a fun place to watch a game, but the atmosphere isn't as electric as Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium.

Other than Philadelphia (which lost its edge entirely when The Vet was torn down), not a single NL city can create an exciting atmosphere.

It practically comes down to only New York and Boston can create that really exciting and electric feeling. Yankee Stadium to me has the best atmosphere, a shame they're not going to use it in a few years time. Fenway is great too, and it has a total old-school feeling; the small dense seats, the fans, just the way it looks.

To me it seems that the only rivarlies worth paying attention to is Yanks-Sox and Dodgers-Giants, and it almost seems like the latter is dying. So yeah, I see what you mean. It's the same thing every year.

Check out the birthday haul: :D

Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Pink Floyd - Animals

Incubus - Morning View

It's been a good day oterwise, too. Only a PSU victory could top it off.

Good choices. Especially the bolded one.

Penn State has the game, don't worry. But where the hell was Oregon?

And god, I'm sooooooooo glad ND lost last night.

superpeer 01-03-2006 07:41 PM

Eh, yeah, it was long, but I don't mind long films. As long as it doesn't get boring, three hours is fine. But short and sweet can work as well.

Personally, I preferred LOTR. Peter Jackson likes to make his films very cheesy, it seems. I was sitting there ... Giant monkey, dinosaurs, now they're fighting each other! come on! What's next, giant spiders or giant insects? ... Yep. :p

Certainly not the best of 2005, but one of the better.

/late

Kurtz 01-03-2006 07:47 PM

Hell, I thought King Kong was better than LOTR.

Walk the Line, Wedding Crashers, and Batman Begins were the best this year.

Yeah, that album's pure gold; it was the first I listened to.

I wanted ND to win because I think it would've helped Penn State's rankings.
