What ride do you have?
Masterwork Alesta 22"

Brokensticks 02-03-2007 04:44 PM
That's why I like having many rides.. choose the sound for the situation.
Too bad I only have enough money for half a ride though :(

Jezen 02-03-2007 04:50 PM
...and then what of closed hi-hats?
We weren't talking about hi-hats. They don't have to match remember.

maniac0796 02-03-2007 04:50 PM

I wonder what half a ride cymbal sounds like.

Would it be half as in like, chopped down the middle, or circumference, or what?

haha no no. we are talking about sound. And he said too much articulation is lame.. or something.

Too me though, closed hats are far more articulate then even a very very dry ride.

Chopped down the middle would be interesting.

I already have a ride. But only enough money for another half of one :(

Oh of course. That's simple fact. The two cymbals are pressing against eachother, cutting off resonance.

Also, very very dry rides still wash a little bit, but the wash sound is more of a breathy sound rather than a ringy sound. If you know what I mean?
That's why I like having many rides.. choose the sound for the situation.
/is working on his collection...

Jezen 02-03-2007 04:58 PM

Oh sorry and by not matching, I mean the ride and hats don't have to match. Meaning, you can have really articulate hats with a beautifully washy ride.

Josiah 02-03-2007 04:58 PM

I like it pingy if it's on the woody organic side. Ya, that smokey wash is cool, my acid ride is all over that. Very dark ominous kinda sounds.

The sound of the hats closed tight, with just the tip of the stick is too articulate for me, I need a lil beef in there myself.

Totally, if I'm playing really ride heavy stuff, like jazz. I'll use 2 rides and maybe a big crash with a rattler. Then I like to use smaller hats, like 12". Cause then I can do more hihat w/ foot stuff, splashes, sizzles etc. And it's not as over powering as with 14". more stuble if you will.

Jezen 02-03-2007 04:59 PM

I don't like really really thin hats, but I don't like thick, harsh hats either. I'm not a New Beat fan.

All that 32nd note Gadd paradiddle variation style stuff works tremendously on the Istanbul Agop Sultans because they have presence but at the same time they are very subtle.

Josiah 02-03-2007 05:02 PM

That's why it's all about mixing cymbals for hats. You can get such incredible sounds, and they are unique cause very few people do it.

Some of the greatest hi-hat sounds I've ever heard, used crashes or splashes in the hat combo.

maniac0796 02-03-2007 05:04 PM

I don't like thick hats. I like medium and thin hats.

Thick hats are just ewwww

Brokensticks 02-03-2007 05:04 PM

AAX Stage hats are perfect for me :) Although I would like to try some smaller hats.

CasB 02-03-2007 05:05 PM
