That may be true. However, I've never watched FOX News to find out, nor would I want to.

Agreed, on the fact that the same kind of thing happens in Australia these days. We used to be a British society, so we had all the benefits of Europe, in a much more pleasant environment, and with a completely industrious, well-cared for workforce. Then U.S. ideals like "not working your best" and "complaining about taxes" invaded, and we are slowly being turned into a North American clone. It's depressing, and I don't blame the people in North America for it.

Maybe the seperatist movements in Australia that wanted to disavow any association with the U.K. and the British Empire led to an invasion of that same "colonialist" mentality, perhaps? I'm not very informed about that so I may not know.

That right there is exactly what a good portion of Americans need to understand (minus the dumbfuck Bush part, I was focusing on the gov't point). That was best part of your post right there for me.

Well, basically, most of Australia was actually penal colonies/ free colonies, which then banded into 5 states, before joining in the Federation Of Australia in 1901. The people who moved here from the U.K. were middle to upper class people who wanted to be British in a new land of opportunity. They was never a drive to distinguish themselves from the "foul opressors", such as the North American colonists changing the spelling of words, and changing the size of various standards. E.g. The U.S. gallon is something like 1.25 of the English gallon.

At the risk of sounding pompous, my nation never was retarded enough to have a war, before going to the bargaining table. We actually realised the outcome was the same, so we just went straight to the treaty.

On the topic of privatization, I feel lucky to have public health care in Canada, but if our minority government falls, and the oposition gets in, it could happen. I hope it doesn't.

Oh no, I meant that the part of your quote I was focusing on with my reply was the gov't/non-business thing.

You slandered Bush in that quote, so to make my reply clearer I wanted to assure other MXers that I wasn't responding with an opposite view to that part. I guess I fayled. :upset:

You don't sound pompous. I find it silly that America did things like that, and it's very depressing that the UK has little ability to stand up for itself in the modern world arena. Me and Bartender talked about this a while ago: ever since the US bailed Britain out of economical failure after WWII with a 50 billion dollar loan, the US treated the sudden subservience of the British pound to the American dollar as a literal working relationship between the nations. As a result, the US image of them is as the most powerful lackey we've got, the bouncer crying "yes boss!" to every crusade America wants them to take part in, from Communism to jihad.

On the other hand, many of the first colonists on the U.S. territory did NOT want to be British in a land of opportunity. They wanted to be left alone. So the fact that our situation produced war wasn't neccesarily retarded, and considering the time gap between Australia and the US I wouldn't say the two could be easily related. That could be my lack of knowledge talking, but I'm just going off of what you were saying.

I agree with this, and I see Australia becoming the second lackey of the U.S.

Perhaps retarded was a bit harsh, but the way I see it, your nation had a civil war before it was even a nation. Also, the war of independance was my have been unavoidable, but a lot of your nation's early history was filled with basically stupid acts, by both the British and the colonists, which could have been avoided.

All right, folks, I'll join in on this discussion later if it's still happening. Time for old-school Alistair MacLean-style war movies: "Where Eagles Dare" is on TCM. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood shooting Nazis. It just doesn't get better than this. See you all in a few.

Hey guys.
/politics discussion
My mind is clearly not able to concentrate at the moment, but if I remember, I'll say a few things tomorrow. At least people can make arguments instead of mindlessly bashing political figures.

///

Anyway, I just saw The Longest Yard. I was expecting it to be iffy, but it was definitely worthwhile. Yeah, there are a number of pop culture references, and there are a number of previous Adam Sandler references (namely "The Waterboy," since it was about football [foosball?] anyway), but it was a good show.

No spoilers from me, no worries there.

I'm also writing another Sputnik review... but the problem is, I'm over 3,000 words, and I'm not even done with the introduction :-\

I'm sure I'll get a bunch of tl;dr's when people "read" it when it's completed.

I wish I had more to say than this, sorry.

By the way, the final round of RMOTM: May edition is up and running, if you participate in this event.

ATM 05-28-2005 09:58 PM

Jom, I uploaded some Kings of Convenience. You could just burn it and give it to that girl you needed a present for. Just look about 2-3 pages back.

Cain 05-28-2005 10:47 PM

Ahhh...good times. That was a classic movie I just saw. Nothing cooler than Clint Eastwood in the prime of his career mowing down Nazis by the dozen with a submachine gun in each hand. :)

EDIT: However, I am tired and also sick, so I'm gonna take some medicine and go to bed. Night all.

gmoneyguy 05-28-2005 10:49 PM

I just got back from The Longest Yard. It was much funnier then I had expected it to be.

YDload 05-28-2005 10:49 PM

Has anyone here ever seen The Rookie? It's an 80s movie (although it might have been made in the early 90s, it's still got that 80s movie feel) within the buddy-cop genre. Judging by the name, you can already tell that Clint Eastwood is the rough veteran and Charlie Sheen is his new partner. Very predictable but still a fun explosion-filled ride. Also, Raul Julia is the villain.

lunch998 05-28-2005 10:52 PM

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Clint Eastwood = Ownage.

Illmatic 05-28-2005 11:49 PM

/missed out on political debate.

oh wells.

I dropped in on two graduation parties...one was The Friend's. She goes to a different school, so there were very few people there that I actually knew. Still, it was nice to see her again, and I met her boyfriend, who between me and all of you is a bit of a douche.

The second was a friend from my high school...that one was a bit better. Quite a bit of my buddies where there, including some from my graduating class...just threw back a few and laughed it up.

anyway, I'm back now. also, The Big Lebowski is on Comedy Central uncut right now. Good flick.

also, holy crap, the WCF is just about over.

ATM 05-28-2005 11:51 PM

WCF?

We are almost up to 10k posts in this thread :/

Western Conference Finals, in the NBA

The Spurs bitchslapped the Suns tonight to take a 3 games to 0 lead.

everyone takes Tim Duncan for granted.

ATM 05-28-2005 11:56 PM

Being the Euro-wannabe that I am, I thought of World Cup Final.

Illmatic 05-28-2005 11:58 PM

The Spurs have players from the Virgin Islands, France, Argentina, Slovenia, and Gary, Indiana. Isn't that international enough?
