That's good then :). Recording yourself is the best way to see how you're coming along.

Do we have enough for a casual thread vocal group? God that would be horrible.
Really, my singing is actually quite good. More suited for heavier alternative music, a la Revis, Creed, or STP (to name some more well-known acts).

gaslight 09-25-2009 01:11 AM

Love Stone Temple Pilots.

gaslight 09-25-2009 07:45 AM

Has anybody played the Gary Willis Ibanez sig? Either the 1005 or the 35. I'd like to hear about it if so.

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 08:42 AM

I haven't. I do have a 1982 fretless Ibanez musician though ;)

gaslight 09-25-2009 08:49 AM

How very helpful ;).

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:04 AM

Oh, oh, what's that?

Me too, man. The DeLeo brothers just blow my mind every time I listen to them. I wish more jazz-trained musicians would play rock/alternative - it breathes a whole new life into the genre. I frequently karaoke STP songs. "Crackerman" is always fun.
Has anybody played the Gary Willis Ibanez sig? Either the 1005 or the 35. I'd like to hear about it if so.
I have not. I don't really play fretless instruments when I walk into guitar stores, mainly because the only ones I ever see are fretless Warwicks/Rockbasses with terribly thick necks or Fenders, neither of which I'd ever purchase.

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:15 AM

Yeah, I rarely get to try many either.

I think I might like the GWBs but there's no way I'd pay $7+G for the 1005. The 35 is in my price range but I don't know if it'd be that great.

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:19 AM

Hey, gas, I'll sell you my Ibanez for $1000 clean, no strings.

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:19 AM

I'm serious but also know you won't buy it :p

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:24 AM

The fretless? Isn't it worth considerably more?

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:27 AM
The fretless? Isn't it worth considerably more?
In all seriousness, I've never been able to fine out exactly how much it should be worth.

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:28 AM

...probably around $500 :p

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:32 AM

-_- I'm not amused.

I'm *assuming* about 2k AUS would be right?

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:39 AM

I actually couldn't even make a guess.

If you wanted an informed answer, maybe e-mail Bass Centre in Melbourne or something, and tell them the specs/pics and all that, and ask them what they think it'd be worth? They sell second-hand stuff so they'd probably give you a realistic amount.

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:41 AM

Hrmm, that's a good point. The only thing I have to go off is I got it for 800 and the guy I got it off regretted "mis-quoting" me so badly, but said he'd be good to his word. He was a great guy!

I might take it to a place if I can't get an email response.

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:43 AM

They were pretty good on the e-mails a few years back when I was looking at getting an Ampeg rig.

funkyhoney 09-25-2009 09:50 AM

I was actually considering going to Melbourne just to get a new bass a while back.

I suppose in hindsight it doesn't really matter, It's mine and I'm not interested in selling :p

gaslight 09-25-2009 09:51 AM

It definitely matters if you're ever thinking about getting some insurance on it though.

FunkMetalBass 09-25-2009 09:52 AM

Anybody care to give me a fair opinion on my band's recordings from our last two practices? (the vocalist and other guitarist weren't there for one of the practices, and two of the songs are from that practice)

http://www.myspace.com/theunnamedonesphx

EDIT: Well, opinions on our music. Obviously the recordings are going to be sh*tty quality given that it was one mic placed in our practice space (which is a giant empty room with a vaulted ceiling tile floors, no less).

EDIT2: After listening to "Rosebush & The Grave," I'm less than impressed with my playing. In all fairness, I was playing with a pick held in between my thumb and middle finger because my finger was broken. No excuses though. :upset:

This be true. I am moving soon too.

You need a more original name IMO.

Also, that huge bass... really? Not saying you're a bad player... but... really?

It sounds pretty good for what it is, not really what I'd listen to, but sounds how it should! Also good to hear a vocalist chick/one who can actually sing.

Overall sounds pretty well rehearsed. Smooth transitions etc. I don't personally think it's generic sounding, you have some good ideas but maybe push the envelope a bit further.

And buy an OD.

Solace is too unoriginal? Maybe.

I don't hardly ever play that 8-string. I mostly play my Schecter and Spector 6-strings.

"Push the envelope..." I am so glad you said that. I've been trying to get the guitarists to work out some more complex and innovative stuff with each other. I've also been writing some sh*t in odd time sigs that I wasn't sure the band was ready to handle. After we perfect our newest song ("Parking Lot Infidelities" - clocking in around the 8-minute mark), I'll bring those out.

It's really hard to get an OD to work in our sound with two distorted guitars (hard to tell in recordings where he was absent). There are a couple instances in "Void" where I've considered busting out the effects, but they probably wont come out until after drums & guitars have been laid down on our demo recordings, because I can't hear well enough at practice to tell what sounds good.

That's how I used to play D:

Still... 6 string :p

It'd be good to hear some not-crap recordings... but more or less sounds alright :smash: minus the undertones of generecism. Yes I'm aware that isn't a word.

To me at least metal needs to really stand out, or it literally is all the same.

fatbandit 09-25-2009 10:35 AM

big basses = win

gaslight 09-25-2009 10:36 AM

Boo to big basses.

4 strings are the heart and soul of bass playing.
That's how I used to play D:
It wouldn't have been so bad if my index finger didn't have to point straight out. I got hardcare cramps holding the pick that way.

6-strings just feel so comfortable in my hands. I don't know what it is. I do use all of my strings, though.

It's not really metal so much as hard rock. Yes, it needs to stand out, but I think of heavier stuff and much more riffage when I think of metal. We use a lot of chords, which is more in the style of rock.

I do understand the "generic" bit, though. I feel the same way sometimes, and it's probably due to the fact that both of our guitarists are blues guitarists, and one of them has never played this style of music, so he really just sits in the background - which isn't really what this band needs. I'm trying to work with him a bit because he is just so damn talented, clean, and fluid with his playing. I'll gladly write parts for him if it means we get to have his great playing and soloing ability.

Either way, I think the actual demo recordings will showcase a lot more than this, but I appreciate you taking the time to listen.

It's true - there's nothing like the feel of a good 4-string in your hands.

Outside of that Ritter that I got to play (I visited a tech friend and he just got done setting one up for a guy :D :D :D ), I've never played a 4 that I particularly enjoyed fingerstyle. I'm hoping my Fender Jazz, after I'm done modding it, will be the one.

I really like the pick tones on my Stingray though. I now know why bassists use them in hard rock/metal - they cut through and sound aggressive as hell!

fatbandit 09-25-2009 10:53 AM

4 strings are the heart and soul of big basses too :p its not like those 4 strings disappear from big basses ^_^
