I gotta agree with gattsu on this one. An album isn't just the music, it goes hand in hand with album art work, pullouts, lyric books etc. Just seems like half-arsing it really to get someone else to do it for you.

Gattsu347 12-13-2009 06:09 PM

it all depends really on the style of the music. doesnt make much sense to stick an impressionist work of visual art onto a clear cut and concise piece of music ya know.

my band is somewhat straight forward so i just did the artwork for the letter and made them pretty abstracted, so to make up for it, i threw a real world object into the back ground and made the whole thing into a real qorld object. all the band members like it so thats good enough for me.

lol, no.

again, i bet 99% of released albums don't have art by the band themselves.

You're probably more than right, honestly. I just think it's not how things should be. It's like buying a hallmark card for a lover with a pre-written love poem inside.

funkyhoney 12-13-2009 08:09 PM

Just draw up your own idea and then get an artist/designer to redo it at an enhanced quality.

Gattsu347 12-13-2009 08:12 PM

Thats a good idea^^

I would liken it more to showing a picture of your girlfriend to some poet and then telling him to write a poem for her. It might be well made as far as the construction of the poem, but it isnt going to be completely honest or accurate. and if you didnt tell her, you could probably get away with it.

funkyhoney 12-13-2009 08:20 PM

Pretty much. **** knows I didn't design my bands EP cover or CD design, because I'm not a ****ing graphic designer. But we do know one and knew what we wanted.

karmapavementplan 12-13-2009 08:20 PM

Ah, so maximising poon and minimising effort? I like your style.

funkyhoney 12-13-2009 08:24 PM

Fortunately for the world I'm as awesome as I am.

Linkz0r!

I'm down with that.

gaslight 12-13-2009 10:03 PM

Album art - if you can do it well, do it yourself. If you can't, consider getting help depending on how high profile the release it.

Be prepared that if you hire a professional designer you will have to set aside at least a couple of hundred extra dollars for the CD budget.

Touring Australia is financial suicide for overseas bands but it's supposed to be a great deal of fun.

FunkMetalBass 12-13-2009 11:14 PM

Has anybody ever had trouble with their wireless systems clipping?

When I use my Schecter through a cable, it sounds just fine. When I use it on my wireless, it sounds like it's farting out and the receiver says it's clipping. I've had to keep the bass' volume around 10% or lower to keep it from clipping. Aside from a single volume knob on the receiver (which is an output volume and does not affect the clipping problem), there are no other controls other than on/off/mute.

gaslight 12-14-2009 12:25 AM

Sounds like the output of your bass is too hot for the Send unit of the wireless.

Is there an attenuator on the Send unit?

I've never used a wireless set-up so I don't really know how they travel.

I realize the pickups are extremely hot, but I never figured that it would be a problem with the wireless.

There is no adjustment on the transmitter ("Send unit") at all other than on/off/mute, and only the output volume on the receiver.

I'll have to check out my roommate's wireless and see if it does the same thing. My wireless could just be too old and poopty to handle it.

gaslight 12-14-2009 12:34 AM

That's a right kick in the pants if it can't be fixed.

FunkMetalBass 12-14-2009 01:14 AM
That's a right kick in the pants if it can't be fixed.
I agree.

I'm actually installing a trimpot in my Schecter right before the output jack so that I can regulate the volumes between my basses without having to rely on my volume knob. Those EMG DCs are HOT.

gaslight 12-14-2009 01:27 AM

Interesting touch, haven't heard of that one before, basically a Line Out control for your bass huh?

Crapdragoon 12-14-2009 04:55 AM

hell yea i just scored a 85 MIJ squier jazz off ebay, the seller is like 2 hour drive away so hopefully i get it like tuesday or so :D

fatbandit 12-14-2009 05:41 AM

Just found out we have a £200 art budget anyway. Sound.

gaslight 12-14-2009 07:14 AM

That's decent money but you have to watch art design types, they'll grub every cent they can. Or shillings or farthings or whatever your money breaks into.

FunkMetalBass 12-14-2009 07:51 AM
Interesting touch, haven't heard of that one before, basically a Line Out control for your bass huh?
Pretty much. That way my volume knobs will have roughly the same effect on my sound and my max output volume will be nearly the same too. It'll be great for live situations.

funkyhoney 12-14-2009 07:57 AM

If I got commissioned for $200 to write something for a bands CD I'd be very happy.

gaslight 12-14-2009 08:06 AM

Haha what like write their liner notes?

funkyhoney 12-14-2009 08:42 AM

I have no idea, but if I got paid $200 for anything writing-wise that wasn't at least a national or state-wide "big deal" I'd be pretty happy.
I have no idea, but if I got paid $200 for anything writing-wise that wasn't at least a national or state-wide "big deal" I'd be pretty happy.
That's because you're in Australia.

gaslight 12-14-2009 09:39 AM

Keep at it Funky.

What did Sean O'Byran Smith say - if every day you can find one thing to do that can contribute to advancing your career, do it, and give it your all and you'll steadily get closer to where you want to be. He meant it for bass but it goes for anything.

I'm still waiting for a decent pay cheque from a gig, but this coming year I'm going to work hard at getting into the covers circuit here which pays about $200 a night at the established level so there's the magic number again.

funkyhoney 12-14-2009 09:55 AM

The covers circuit is such an easy cash cow. To a point, of course.

I had some guy try and pay my band out for playing at a place that charges to hire the venue by saying we should "play in local pubs because they're free."

Yeah, I'll forgo my 8x5m stage with excellent PA, subs, foldbacks and lighting with a soundguy for your small corner in a shitty local tavern for a 5 piece original rock band. That'll be FUN!

gaslight 12-14-2009 10:05 AM

Yep it'll be a good year I've decided.

FunkMetalBass 12-14-2009 10:38 AM
Yep it'll be a good year I've decided.
Agreed. Next year is going to be even better. The band is in full-swing right now, we've got 3 new songs in the works, we're recording, we're playing out, we're going to start stepping up our merchandise dept., we're getting a local fan-base (something I've never experienced before!), getting noticed by other bands that are pulling us onto their bill, and we've been offered shows in neighboring states (we'll be touring California sometime next year).

I'm hoping to actually take home some money this year instead of using it all for band-related purposes.

gaslight 12-14-2009 10:41 AM

Oh yeah, and the first proper full length album I've played on will be out next year too :). Excited about mixing that still. Free EP from an old band of mine coming up maybe, Jan, Feb, there's some gay **** to sort out first.

On the downside my day job such as it is might be turning to **** which will really piss on the music parade, I need it until such time as I can afford to not do it anymore which is not foreseeable.

Will your EP be available online?

gaslight 12-14-2009 11:06 AM

For sure bro it'll be basically only available for free online. I'll personally link you all to it when the time comes. I just want to have the limited run physical copies sorted out before that. It's been a pretty drawn out and lame process so like, next to nothing of the awesome stuff I wanted to do will be done unfortunately but I'm over spending money and effort on it so once I've finished the art and paid for the manufacturing that'll be all she wrote and it'll be scattered amongst the world via the internet and just sold locally to whoever wants a real copy.

FunkMetalBass 12-14-2009 04:11 PM

Well, I've got a guy who wants to trade me a Kingston KZ6 for my 8-string, and I'm very heavily considering the offer if I can get him to throw in cash plus a case.

I may finally be rid of my 8-string. Idk whether to be happy or sad.

fatbandit 12-14-2009 04:21 PM

happy.

Moon Flavor 12-14-2009 04:49 PM

John Frusciante quit the Chili Peppers. Fuck yes!

Leave them in the dust John, you're so much better than that.

I hope he does something worthwhile with it but I have my doubts

He's just going to continue focussing on the stuff he's been doing, I assume. And that stuff is great and so much better than RHCP. Works for me.
