Don't get buttflu.

Pluperfect_Arson 09-24-2009 04:03 PM
LOL.

It's always been H1N1. It's just the technical name for that particular variant of the Influenza A virus, just like the common flu for the past 40+ years is H3N2.

It's all relative to the protiens on the surface of the virus, specifically hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N).

Why a country would feel the need to refer to it in technical terms to the layman baffles me anyways.
Yeah, I knew it was H1N1 from the start, as my mother is going back to school, hoping to finish up her degree and work for the CDC, since she is into those types of things.

H1N1 sounds scarier than swine flu, though!

fatbandit 09-24-2009 04:05 PM

Turning the volume down makes it sound less good. I will have a play around with pickup height though.

The preamp makes no difference in this respect - the clipping occurs even direct from the bass to a desk. If you're referring to the Tonehammer distorting, then I'm still a little confused why it's doing it. Even with the gain and volume wound right down, it isn't happy.
Turn your volume down a little bit and lower your pickups - they're probably just too close to the strings.

You can also use less boosting on your preamp.
Spaceman Spiff 09-24-2009 04:05 PM

A combination of letters and numbers that mean nothing to most people is scarier than swine flu... except that swine flu makes it sound like you'll get sick if you eat any pork products.

Final Fantasy Tactics got released to the PS3 store... I'm hooked. >_<

If it's clipping direct in, it's always clipping and you just don't notice. If you like the sound of it clipping, then keep it. Just run through a DI and turn the volume down a bit so that THAT singal isn't distorted once it gets into the desk.

fatbandit 09-24-2009 04:46 PM

It's always been clipping and I don't notice because of my normal signal, which is driven as owt. But when recording clean DI stuff, it is obnoxious, as I record both signals simultaneously. I'm working towards a fix anyway :)

fatbandit 09-24-2009 05:06 PM

when do we get a new casual?

PaulSimonon 09-24-2009 06:59 PM

Never.

Pluperfect_Arson 09-24-2009 07:04 PM

With the way the forum is, I do not think a new Casual is warranted.

gaslight 09-24-2009 08:58 PM
Yeah, I'm excited for it. I really like recording, even though it can take a long time for a simple 5-minute song.

Recording vocals will be interesting - I've never done it before, so I have no idea how good my vocal control is. Guess we'll find out!
Oh wow, lead vocals? Studio time isn't the ideal place to experiment :p.

Epidemechanical 09-24-2009 09:05 PM

if youve never done a song on vocals before then its going to be terrible

like

beyond terrible

gaslight 09-24-2009 09:14 PM

Yeah nothing personal about you or anything but it's pretty much equivelant to picking up an oboe and trying to record on that. Unless you already are an accomplished oboist in which case it isn't like that at all.

funkyhoney 09-24-2009 09:43 PM

It'd be more like trying to play an accordion with your dick if you'd never played one before.

gaslight 09-24-2009 09:48 PM

Well you can probably at least leave your pants on .

funkyhoney 09-24-2009 09:52 PM

Hey, apparently people think I look like young David Bowie. Wtf.

gaslight 09-24-2009 09:53 PM

Haha ouch. Hopefully they don't think you've got a heap of make-up and freaky outfits in the closet.

I believe it was this picture that started it all.

And then I grew my hair long and people said I looked like Sid Vicious. ffs.

Pluperfect_Arson 09-24-2009 10:03 PM

Flipping handlebar grips back to the appropriate way is hard.

When I pulled them off my bullhorns a while ago, they flipped inside-out.

ugh

gaslight 09-24-2009 10:03 PM

Telling a bassist he looks like Sid Vicious is just the height of rudeness.

If I played in a punk band it'd be ok... But I wear jeans and t-shirts and can actually play my instrument.

gaslight 09-24-2009 10:09 PM

It's never okay.

funkyhoney 09-24-2009 10:12 PM

It's ok when Gary Oldman did it.

funkyhoney 09-24-2009 10:20 PM

They may still have "it", but I don't like what "it" is.

gaslight 09-24-2009 10:22 PM

I do not approve of this comment.

Everyone should get Emilie Simon's new album, The Big Machine.
Oh wow, lead vocals? Studio time isn't the ideal place to experiment :p.
It's actually just my buddy coming over with his laptop and recording us, so no pressure. I've done some personal recordings over the past 3 or 4 years with myself on vocals, so it's not totally new to me either. I've been consciously working on my control over the past month when singing. I'm sure it wont be the greatest, but it'll be a good starting place. I'm only on lead vocals for one song too, otherwise I just do small backing vocal parts in our music.

Raayl, any tips?

gaslight 09-25-2009 12:43 AM

That's good then :). Recording yourself is the best way to see how you're coming along.

Do we have enough for a casual thread vocal group? God that would be horrible.
