Hey Surf, congratulations on that first. I'm starting my c.w course in September but I've been out of the writing scene for God knows how long. I think I last wrote something about 3 or 4 months ago. Did they expect anything from you when you started your course?
Going to Nepal on Saturday for 5 weeks, I'm sure some inspiration will arise from within the Buddhist temples, or find me trekking up Everest (not to the top obviously). |
I'm painting things so I may post some of the poems that come with the paintings.
|
Why don't u post your paintings and we post poems of your paintings?
Yes/no? |

(I think you've told me before, but where? - how'd the A-levels go?) The course I'm doing is English lit, and half of the module choices I take are creative writing ones (the maximum allowed/offered), so it might be a bit different. But in the modules, there were a few people who wrote stuff before hand, and a load of people who hadn't written a thing and signed up for it to have a look really. A friend of mine had done no writing at all, but still managed to do pretty well. So I don't know really. |

Yes/no?
Sure! Let me finish some of those up and I'll update you guys on it. :D |

Was never really sure about it in the first place, but 3 more years of education is better than full-time work. May aswell spend it doing something I enjoy. I'm going to Plymouth, depending on A levels, results 14th August. Pretty confident, but I screwed up my Biology so we'll see. Cheers for the info. I gotta keep on writing though, that's for sure. Wrote something the other day which I've put up, didn't have to work through much writer's block which is a good sign. This place looks pretty dead lately, but I like that idea of the poem/painting idea, that's neat. |
Plymouthis cool, Bjork was playing there in april but I couldn't make it. I'm just north a bit in exeter. Education is always better. I might do a master's instead of working. Anything to put of getting a real job.
Good luck with the a levels man, should be fine. |
Ugh.. Creative Writing.. Extremely disappointed by that one, couldn't take it any more and switched back to Sociology/Cultural Studies. The last straw was when my tutor made note that my haiku didn't adhere to strict 5-7-5 count, yet in the next sentence stated that I must understand syllable count because my sonnet's iambic pentameter was perfect. The Japanese don't even count f'ing syllables for f/cks sake, and the 5-7-5 thing is just an approximate translation into an English form. Half of the greatest English haiku don't even fit the 5-7-5 structure. I still got 90%, but I find marking creativity is kind of arbitrarily subjective anyway. Stupid modernists trying to be objective in a post-modern world. Puke.
Go the whole scholastic route instead of work/job/career/trade thing though. Its the greatest, just not looking forward to all the debt. |

this. especially the last bit. My tutors are quite good, they seem pretty objective. I wrote one story last year that was stupidly pretentious and trying so desperately to be post modern and edgy or whatever, and they saw it, understood what I was trying to do and gave me some good advice. |
Bleghh...
I have 3 semesters left and all I want to do is drop out and tour. I have no interest in ever having a "real" job, plus I know my current professors would allow me to keep using my practice space if I stayed in the area. It's not even that school is so bad, I just can't stand the thought of being forced to get a real job in order to pay off debt. I'd rather work a dead end job so that I can quit at a moments notice to tour. All I need is a van that I can modify into my own little roving home. On the other hand, finishing school is the last thing I have to do in order to make my parents happy, or at least to let them rest a little easier. Plus, they're giving me $1,500 for a tattoo if I graduate on dean's list, which is way too easy for a music student at state school. I'm probably digging my own grave by getting it done now though. |
$1500 for a tattoo?
It better be a good one. |
Left elbow across the back to my right shoulder in full color. The artwork for it should be done in a few weeks and around Thanksgiving I should have my first appointment.
|
Any pictures of what its going to be? sounds like a lot of work.
I'd get bored of a tattoo in a few days and then be stuck with it =/ |
Yep... that's why I've never got a tattoo (Thankfully,.. I think I would have made a few regrettable choices).
But yeah.. pics? I'm always interested in other peoples work they get done. |
Best tattoo I ever saw was in the local shop. I was flicking through a book things the guy had done and there was one of john mccririck.

When I get a picture of the art I'll post it but in description...
Up the back of my arm will be taughannock falls (http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=taughannock&btnG=Search+Images) which is in my town (just north, but in the county. If anyone has seen an Ithaca Is Gorges shirt, the I is actually taughannock) which will become a tree truck into branches at the top, 5 main branches one for each family member. Each will represent a different season (I live in a super temperate area so seasons are very well defined, dad- born in the fall, mom born in the spring, me born in winter and my sister and brother were born in summer) Those will be all over my shoulder, shoulder blade, chest. The fifth branch will become nerve endings across my upper back and at the end they will begin to fire off making the fifth branch for my brother who has Multiple Sclerosis and after the fired nerves, it will become smoke. The whole idea behind the tattoo is permanence. Earth outlives family, family outlives our bodies, and in the end all we are is dust and ash. Morbidly uplifting. Surf, that link is dead. |
that tattoo sounds much better than some star or something boring. Tribal is cack as well
that's the guy from the tattoo, but it was a diferent picture. Also, got back from Edinburgh yesterday, saw tom waits live. ****ing brilliant. |
